I was reading Yuri's blog on his least and most favorite items. He uses a 12x12 Intuos. Why a square format and not the 9x12. How does this square format translate to a cinema display? Is a bunch of the tablet become non usable? i want get a tablet soon and would like to buy the right one first time around. Thanks,

Peter

You can choose to either stretch the movements of the pen so that all of the tablet is used, or keep the space used on the tablet proportional to the screen (so that part of the tablet is lost).

there is also a mouse mode where all the tablet is used, and if you reach the edge then picking up the pen or mouse/puck works like a mouse and actually stops the cursor tracking until you put it back down (or place closer to the tablet).

one thing to think about what happens if you have dual monitors - a 12x12 would be very nice if you had 2 cinema displays one on top of each other. I just keep the stylus working in pen mode on my main display and the mouse in mouse mode works across both displays when i'm not working in photoshop

until they dropped the graphire from the range there was no need to pay through the nose for a intuos, I have 6x8 graphire and it was perfectly acceptable on a 1280x1024 display, now that i have and HD res display its starting to feel a little less 'precise' but still very good - and still way better than a mouse!

if you are paying all that money then get the 12x19 its only a little more than the 12x12! all that sweeping your arm back and forth will be good exercise lol

the size of the tablet you need depends on if you want to move the mouse or pen with your wrist or arm.  If you are a wrist user, a smaller tablet will do, if you are a arm user, then get a larger tablet.

What I did when buying a tablet was to look at the screen with a pen in my hand and a paper under the pen.  Look at the top left of the screen, then pretend you move a mouse with the pen and draw over to the top right, then draw to the bottom right (all the time imagining a mouse moving on the screen.  Dont look at the paper, just move around with the pen while looking at the screen imagining a mouse.  Move all around to all corners many times, going on diagonals etc.  When you are done you should have a rough rectangle on your paper.  You will need a tablet a little larger than this.  For me, I ended up buying the 4x8 intuos tablet for a 20" monitor and still dont even use the entire tablet.

I had an Intuous 9x12 for 8 years and last year bought the Intuous3 6x11.

I think the smaller size works even better for me - I have a dual monitor setup with two 24" Samsung monitors. I use the tablet all the time - primarily for Photoshop and Illustrator, but the Wacom mouse and my MightyMouse both sit unused 99.99% of the time.

I struggled with the ergonomics of my setup trying to avoid wrist, elbow and shoulder strain and the smaller tablet seems to help there without in any way cramping my style while drawing.

Now that Yuri is shooting with a Hassey, are they not square format anyway?

I imagine once the image is up on the screen and is zoomed in, the area you are working on is the proportions of the screen, which is most of the time

I have the 12 x 12 Intuos and man, it's huge.  Easy to rest on my lap, but I've only assigned the lower half of it for use on my dual monitor setup.  That tells me I would do just fine with a wacom half the size.  I might end up downsizing in the future.

Sometimes my hands and wrists get sore from the mouse - I'm glad to have the option to switch to the wacom once in a while, even for general web browsing.  I've been doing carpal tunnel exercises everyday, just to prevent anything bad from happening.  Working on a computer 8-10 hours a day since I was in high school (I'm in my mid twenties now) is going to eventually take it's toll on my body.  If only the pen had a scroll wheel on it.  Maybe I can upgrade my pen eventually.

Me too, I can't even draw good stick figures, a tablet may be way beyond tracing around an image.  ;D

Slightly off topic, he also listed on his disappointments the Canon 24-105 lens. I wrote and asked him why, but didn't get a reply. Anyone have and insight into this? Generally this lens is well accepted and gets high reviews. I just wondered what caused his disapproval?

Why's a guy with Hasselblad $37,000 digital backs, shooting a Canon with anything other than all prime L lenses anyway?  ;)

I really like my 25-105 so much so that I am selling my 24-70. I just don't put the 24-70 on the camera much these days.
