It's ST315005EXA101-RK to be exact. So far I did not have many problems with Seagate. I am keeping my photos on 3 hard drives anyway :-)

Is this one of those backups that you can bring with you on location overseas, so you can free up your SDHC card ? I like to get one to backup my 16g panasonic card when I go back to Tunisia for excursion #2.

I did some research and so far 1TB Western Digital Green Series seems like one of the most reliable high capacity hard drives.

I have a Jobo Gigaone 40GB for that purpose and it works perfectly. It is 2 years old now, so there must be newer and bigger models.

I agree with Konstantin.

The Western Digitals (if it's the one I have) spin upright and it is supposed to be very taxing on the hard drive.  I only use mine for storage so I make sure it is not plugged in unless I am using it.

Unless you work in IT or disk repair how many drive failures have you experienced? I got 2 in 20 years. Even if 10 disks fails it is not statistically significant sample :-) Besides I am not going to dump everything I got on this drive at once. I still got other copies of my files. If it fails it will be replaced by manufacturer during warranty period whatever it is. After that I will probably can buy 5TB anyway :-) In meanwhile probably my other backup disk got replaced too.

From WD website, it seems this is only a regular HD, not a portable one?  Unless you buy a case for that purpose.

Any experiences with WD's My Passport Essential?  It's a small portable one, unlike the current solution I have (regular HD + external case). I was thinking of it for a second backup, with the advantage of more portability.
