I have used a laptop for years for photojournalism, where the requirements for post production are pretty limited. When I started in stock I tried using it, but colour correction and further post production was very difficult and uneven (MacBook Pro). I've now hooked it up to a large monitor and this works reasonably well, but I plan to by a desktop computer for the power and storage.  Frankly, I think you need both.

I started with a major desktop, but now the laptops have caught up to them in both processor speeds and video cards.  I still have both since my last desktop was a monster system but have a Sony Laptop now, but both are set up to 32 inch monitors.

I also like to have my laptop with me on site when I do model shoots and also I can tether to it as well.

I tend to color correct each monitor including my laptop every week.

I've been using a laptop as long as they have existed and will likely never go back to a desktop. Having said that, for this work a bigger better monitor would be better.
