Ok, I'm going to ask and answer my own question only because I couldn't find a good answer to this on the 'net when I was searching desperately last night.
My problem: I am using the Spyder3Print to profile my printer and everything seemed to be working well and the colors were matching up on the screen with what was being read by the sensor EXCEPT the white patch. It was being read as black, which makes the whole calibration useless.
I wrote a message to the datacolor support and in the meantime got it to work, but didn't know how. Once support responded, what they said made sense and cleared things up. I wasn't pressing hard enough down on the whole sensor (specifically making sure the tip was tight against the base) when I was calibrating the sensor so light was sneaking in and messing up the calibration. Please let me ask if you calibrated the sensor first on its own calibration base (with the white tile in it)? If yes, please ensure that you press the sensor down (the whole device, not just the button). The sensor has to touch the ground of the calibration tile, otherwise it can result in problems like yours.
So hopefully if other people have this problem they can find this thread via Google.
