I was just reading and it seems that the Wacom Intuos3 6" x 11" Graphics Tablet is rated as best value. I guess the small ones with 512 points are not as easy to use, and the 4x5 is small. This one is in between that and the large size.

Found them at about $329, which is a big bunch of green for me to be spending on something I don't know much about. Seems that people who use them swear they are the best tool and make work much easier.

Anyone who uses a tablet who can tell me if this is a good one, good size, for all around photo editing and drawing?

It is the best money I've ever spent. It's made me a much more productive illustrator, and it's so much more enjoyable than the former sensation of drawing with a bar of soap. The programmable hot keys are the bomb and you'll be flying through those shortcuts in no time. You will have to commit to getting used to it though (like lock up your mouse for a week) but once you get it, you got it and you will never regret it! Intuos rocks!!

I bought the Wacom Bamboo tablet a few weeks ago. I think it has 6x4 of area with 512 points. Its a bit too small, should have saved up for the larger Intuos model. Its a shame cause its my first tablet, and it really does speed things up, its just a little too frustrating to use to justify giving up the mouse forever.

I have the 8" x 5" (A5) size and it's plenty big enough. Any bigger I'd have a sore arm.

Important to remember that unlike a mouse, bottom left of the screen is bottom left of the tablets working area. Likewise top right of the screen is top right on the tablet, which considering it has a 2-3" surround can be a long way away.

I've got the Intuos 3 A5 wide and I couldn't live without it, the A4 was too big for me.

They take a short while to get use too but once you've mastered it you'll wonder why you spent so much wasted time before.

Of course it depends on your style of work, but if you're thinking about getting one I'd guess you need one.

I have the Intuos III 6x8 and couldn't live without it.  I do still use the mouse that came with it for general web browsing and the like.  But when it comes to processing images, there's no comparison with the pen.  Like others have said, it takes some getting used to (took me about two weeks).  But once you're there, you'll never go back.

I have the 8x5 and it is plenty big.  I suppose it all depends on how you use your mouse though, and how much you like to move it to get accross the screen.  i think i only use about 70% of the mouse pad.

The way i tested however was I took a pen on a blank paper on the desk in front of me.  I looked at the top left corner of the screen and imagined that i was moving the mouse with the pen and went to all the four corners and back and forth and diagnal and all around the screen many times (pretending) and all the time moving the pen.  When i was finished I had a really rough square... this is the size the tablet should be (minimum)

Yes I know, back from the dead, but why start another new topic for the same questions?

Found WACOM INTUOS 2 XD-0608-U 6X8 A5 USB GRAPHICS TABLET runs about $50 on eBay.

Any reason why I'd want to spend much more for the III model?

How about Bamboo for simple tracing? Or some of the other less expensive models?

What's the lowest someone can go and still have the basic functions and usefulness?

Little OT:
Anybody has some personal experience with Wacom Inkling? For me it looks too great to be true. Still waiting to hear about some glitches.

Edit: Sorry - it's not available yet. It was supposed to be in shops in September.

I was also very interested in this one so did some more reading (and watching) on it.
The biggest downside for me is that there's no option to erase mistakes while sketching...i've also read reviews that werent too happy about the receiver; it seems it can be a bit tedious (absolutely nothing can be in front of it, you have to stay away a certain distance, but cant move too far away from it either..).

Yeah, so what, it's close enough for Rock and Roll. I ended up looking at the press release for the Inkling and it's nowhere close to what I need, but for someone who wants to sketch onpaper and save, I suppose there could be some positives.

I'm not drawing, I want the tablet for editing photos. Hey how's the pen tool with a pen? Seems a logical choice.

Have two, one Intuos 3 Medium (A5) and one Intuos 4 Small (A6). Use the smaller one with the laptop and larger one with the desktop.

Both tablets are great, but I prefer the surface on the 3 one. The surface on Intuos 4 is much coarser and wears the pen tips a LOT faster. On the 3 I've never changed the tip in 5-6 years of daily use, but on the 4 I've changed it already after 6 months of sporadic use.

.....Wacom Inkling? For me it looks too great to be true.....

apparently it is too good to be true. It's only accurate to between 2.5 and 5mm from what I understand, which makes it pretty much useless.
I would wait for a few models down the line when they perfect the tech.

You can set it up to work like a mouse if you want in one of the options. Just lift off reposition and go again. I have a medium tablet and I'd dislocate my shoulder trying to reach the top right corner of the screen.
