For anyone who likes contests, this one might be a good one to enter as there is a LOT less submitters on crestock than on other sites.

CONTEST

prizes:  Leica D-lux 3, NIKON D40x + ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS3, CANON EOS-1Ds MARK II

I wouldn't mind any of those.

Any of you selling images there? Is it worth it?

kosmikkreeper: I joined Crestock last summer - it was the first agency I joined. They rejected > 50% of my submissions, but I persevered and stuck with it, despite having only a handful of 25c sales. On a lark, I posted a few shots to IS in mid-November. It only took a few IS days to surpass months of Crestock, and I began looking at microstock seriously. I was surprised to see it as an "up and comer" here.

Needless to say, I no longer upload to Crestock. As leaf hinted, I don't think many do anymore, which goes a long way in explaining why they are offering such prizes.

I have 50+ images there with only 4 sales but I like the site layout and as long as they keep trying I'm going to stick with them. It's a great looking site and if they are able at some time in the future to find their groove I'm going to be there. It doesn't take long for me to upload a couple of images to them at the same time I'm uploading to my other sites. The rejections no longer bother me. I look at Crestock as a challenge. I'm certainly going to try for that Canon although I don't know a thing about shooting speed shots. I guess I'm about to learn.

Has anyone entered for the first round of this competition? The theme is 'The Meaning of Life'. That's a tough challenge. Is it a bowl of cherries? ... a pathless wood? ... a gamble ... an incurable disease?

Can you post the link to your entry so we can see your interpretation? And maybe discover the meaning after all   ;D

I've just entered and my effort can be seen here ...

How are winners going to be picked?  Popular judgement only?

If so, we should team up, voting in each other's pics.  :)

I haven't submitted anything yet.  I must see if I have something valid.  Unfortunately I'll be away during the 3rd round.

Regards,
Adelaide

Here my submission: http://www.crestock.com/blog/photography/contest2007/entry.aspx?id=1953 In case somebody wants to vote for it - feel welcome, but no more insulting comments please, some constructive critic instead is fine with me! SY

It's a shame about the insulting comments, Hospitalera. After all, what Crestock is running is a photo contest, not a religious forum or a slanging match. Take no notice of the comments ... you've got great lighting in the picture, brings out the texture marvellously. And that what matters here.

I'm afraid that, though I've entered, I'm a bit sceptical about the voting process. There are some really great photos entered ... including mine  ;)  (don't forget I'm biased when I say that).

But the one that seems to be streaking into the lead at the moment is, in my opinion, nothing special. Just about the whole of the bottom half of the image is wasted space with a jumble of under-exposed railings or something. And the two figures (two?) ... if there wasn't the caption they could be anything. (Base of a lamp-post?)

There are a lot of other images that are way, way better, but this one is streaking ahead with votes, and comments.

I suspect a bit of fiddling going on, and am not optimistic about the result.   :'(

Thanks Bateleur for the nice words, I must say it was a slap in the face as I saw the first comment. The theme is "The meaning of Life", and I would have expected everybody to respect other peoples view... Regarding the voting, I just got this email from Crestock and the list is already reduced to <1000.

"Dear Crestock Contest Contributor,

Submissions for round 1 of our photography contest are now closed, with an incredible 1700 entries.
As many contest contributors have already commented, it is highly problematic to ensure equal exposure with this number of photos entered. It is simply unrealistic to expect that most people will take time to look through even half of the submitted photos in order to cast their votes.

In consultation with our judges we have therefore found it necessary to put the entries in round 1 through a pre-voting selection process to avoid a situation which encourages various types of manipulations in order to gain added exposure for your image in the overwhelming mass of images. This in accordance with point 2 of the contest rules, which states that 'all entries must relate to the theme of the contest round', and point 18, which states that 'we reserve the right to adjust the contest proceedings if necessary to ensure a fair contest'. The theme for round 1 was particularly broad, so the selection process has favoured entries that address the theme in a creative and visually exciting manner, and will result in an edited Top Entries list of approximately 500 entries.

While some of you will be disappointed to find that you are not included on this Top Entries list, we are sure most of you will appreciate us taking this step in order to ensure the integrity of the contest.

Round 1 of the contest is now open for voting and you can also submit your photo to round 2, where the theme is 'Feeling Sexy?'

Thanks to everyone who participated in round 1 and good luck in the coming rounds of contest,
The Crestock Team "

Let's see how it goes... SY

reducing the number of entries was  a good idea I think,IMO they could even go further and reduce it to 200 or even 100 .
and about voting, you know main point of the contest is publicity, which I think has been successful so far.I too signed up  and uploaded some  photos:) and public votes is a part of it but I'd like the main decision to be taken by a professional jury(I hope this is the case)and decision shouldn't depend on public votes, which can simply be missused.since it not like political election, winner should be choosen by professionals,IMAO
good luck everyone who entered!
edit:it says in the conditions winners will be pick by %50public votes and %50jurry.

Penguins (order Sphenisciformes, family Spheniscidae) are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. SY

But before you get impressed... The definition is from my good old friend wikipedia  ;D

Waddya think?

Has this competition become a complete joke?

To me it looks like at least 3 out of the top 6, counting votes so far, are prime candidates for Crestock's 'Worst image of the Day'. And yet they've got 60+ votes.

At the same time, FreezingPicture's image has only got 3. And my image only 1  :'(  .... though I'm not saying mine's utterly brilliant. I agree there are two excellent ones in the top six.

But, for the others, it looks like there's a whole load of vote-rigging going on.

Or am I too old-fashioned with my photographic eye?

Dont worry , I still haven't voted , so your backup votes from a laziest person in the contest are still to come one of these days. ;)

The African kids running  to the water , great shot and I think it should win.

3/5 of all photos there don't follow the topic , or I'm too stupid tho see the connection.

well,I still think-like  I said in my earlier post - public votes tend to be disputable(and even biased )in  such contest,so I am not surprised that may be the worst photos getting high ratings and overestimated comments, which sound just ridiculous to even those with  very little knowledge of photography.
even if impact of public votes  on the final decision  limited 50% it still is still too much IMO.

BTW guys how do you see rankings do you just check the number of votes and comments they received?

Along the top are a series of options. Sort by ascending order, descending order, votes or comments. Click on the 'Votes' one and you'll get them in order.

thank you very much Bateleur,
anyhow I didn't see it before:)
I just checked  them in rating  descending order and  to my personal taste ,lower ranking ones are much better than the ones that made top places.funny:)

Are you sure? Rule 17 states:

Any one person may only cast a single, positive vote for each contest image.

This is a bit ambiguous.

If you can vote for more than one that would be great. I've been hesitating about which one to give my vote to. Most of the images I'm hesitating over are from people on here. But if you can vote for more than one ...

...way hey! You've all got my vote gals and guys.

Yep, positive, you can vote several times, but only one time for each image and not on your own image, if anybody wants to vote on mine *hint-hint* here is the link http://www.crestock.com/blog/photography/contest2007/entry.aspx?id=1953

I'm not sure if this competition is doing Crestock a whole lot of good in the long run. Here are some of the negative things which may start to count against them with public relations ...

1) I submitted a photo for the second round on Saturday. It's vanished. No indication if it's been accepted or rejected. It's like it's been swallowed by a black hole. And I'm not the only one this has happened to. Complaints about this are beginning to appear on their forum.

2)  They changed the rules in the middle of the last round and wiped out about 3/4 of the entries after voting had started. I can't complain as my photo got through  :)  but I know there was a whole load of people seriously p****d off.

3) There is clearly rampant cheating in the public voting. Just look at some of the images that are getting massive votes and swathes of rave comments! Beurk!

Moral of this story ... think carefully through a public relations drive before launching it in the big wide world.

I've entered for the second round. The subject is 'Feeling Sexy'. Anyone interested can see my entry here ...

I'd love to receive comments (good and bad) if anyone has them.

And good luck to anyone else entered. Maybe post the link to your entries on here too so we can all see them.

Sorry Bateleur,

I went directly to your entry willing to comment and eventually to vote for it, but as beautiful and well executed the image is I think it has not a lot to do with "Feeling Sexy" So I left no comment, rather then a negative one. I repeat IT IS A BEAUTIFUL IMAGE, perhaps it is only me who can't see the connection with the theme. Prove me wrong by winning  ;) SY
