Title: Extended Licensing at Cutcaster- Would love your feedback
Post by: johngriffin on May 07, 2009, 16:39
What do you think of CC's extended licensing policy? It is not live yet and I am taking any and all criticism so lets hear it. I can not please everyone but I will do my absolute best to explain myself and change the extended licensing options based on your feedback and buyers feedback.  I am weighing two sides here.  The sellers and the buyers so I need to hear from both to get a fair middle ground. A lot of what is written in our policy was dictated by users feedback at the Cutcaster forums, our competitors and buyers that I spoke with who complained about not wanting to use MS sites because they didn't feel comfortable with the rights that were granted and just chose to ignore those sites. I want this to be as transparent a process as possible so that is why I am asking you first and putting myself out here.

Speak now or forever hold your peace ;-)
(or at least for the first release of ELs)

I thought you already Ext Lic., Mr. Griffin?
Without being verbose, anything that gives us contributors an opportunity to earn more is fine with me.  I am not sure if you are going to find an objections on that here, but if there is, I am all ears too. Surprise me people !

Sounds great to me John, go for it!!!...when will it go into effect?
BTW, just like The bat, I thought CC already had extended Lic.

It all looks good to me and on par with other sites. I've had about 10 EL's total from two sites and believe me they are always welcome! A nice surprise for the day. With that said, do it!

On another note, I have been invited to join you and I will be shortly as soon as I finish up some other things. You appear to be a "go getter" and active on this site, that was a big factor in deciding to join you.

I see you are from Syracuse N.Y. ... I was born and raised in Ithaca, N.Y and have family in Syracuse area. Nice country!

good luck.

Jon,

Your agency should be oriented to prices set by authors or what?

If you wish to limit them with this fixing prices that is a bit unfair. Also, I think that low Extensions are so low that you can contact some magazines to pay you some of about few thousands of ELs in advance.

You must either up that licence to near $100 or let authors pricing their own EL!

Zymmetrical has nice approach there - They've made all Extended licences by frame: Full size image times 10. So, if full sized image is sold by $5 then EL is $50. If image is sold for $20 then EL is $200.
That should be it if you wish to keep a bit of mid-stock nitche for CC.

But, if microstock only is what you wish your agency to become:
Multi-seat should be 50-75
All other unlimited variants are 75-125

Some statistic in ELs says that one is coming on average of 1500 other downloads....Keep that in mind!
So, I would opt-out from your Exclusive licences due to that I get more on Shutterstock than you are offering me with 40% share as non-exclusive.

BTW, Shutterstock charges $100 EL and gives $28 to contributors!
So, think about what I've sugested.

Best of luck and see you around!

milinz.  you are definitely correct and that is something that we are looking at and will be experimenting with as well.  this is just a start so we can see how buyers are purchasing the ELs at Cutcaster.  Let me know what other feedback you guys have. thanks a ton.

I think you will not see so much more replies. I said it all. I doubt that anyones interest is to kill earnings.

So... Just fix your ELs to advised range and enjoy...

Today I got EL on Shutterstock - $100 charged, my cut is $28.

[EDIT] PLEASE NO MORE EXPERIMENTS! I am as well as others sick of experiments!

He may be right, John, but is not speaking for me.  I hope you do continue to experiment.  Dare to be different.  I admire the guts it takes to put your money where your mouth is.  As I said in the forum ... you continue to have my trust.  Let's hope you find that "just right" combination.

Yep I said that I am not speaking for all... I said what I said in my best interest as well as to best interest of most other authors.

That interest is surely to earn as much money as possible per image sold.

Opt-Out is something to see coming from many authors if you make low prices.

I am differing my work from nanostock and I stopped contributing to some low share low earners low traffic agencies!

I doubt many people have time for experimets nowdays ;-)

I think it should be about 10 times more that the max resolution price, or at least 100$ for one EL.
