Title: New Search Tweak at Cutcaster. Opinions?
Post by: johngriffin on October 22, 2009, 12:02
We have tweaked our search algorithm a bit so more variety is returned when doing a keyword search and we made it more refined when searching for compound phrases. It is a work in progress but please let me know what you guys think and if you see any areas of improvement or weirdness in the results.  I have been asking buyers the same questions but would love to hear what you think bc most of you have a vested interest in seeing the search feature working really well so buyers don't waste time searching and not finding what they are looking for ;-)

In addition we are working on improving our upload area, user stats and providing more real time information on what buyers are demanding.  I am very excited to release this work in the future.

Good attempt.

I did find a lot of errors.  I did a search alternately for American Bald Eagle, Bald Eagle, and Eagle.  The search for Eagle returned the most hits and had the most errors.  In all cases not all Eagle photos were included in the search.  In the Eagle search what came back included Euro coins, Castles, Flags (with no eagle in the photo or description), landscapes (some had Eagle as part of the name but no Eagle in the photo so I can understand those), owls (some were called Eagle Owl-which are not Eagles but I can see how the search engine would include them), hawks (same as for Owl), etc.

Still--the search is easier to use and returns more hits than the old search engine.

I did notice that when I changed from the default 20 to 100 results per page, it went back to 20 again on the next search.  That would be a PITA if I was a buyer.  I am using firefox.

As I wrote already in private and in more detail, the multiple word search now seems AND (what a buyer would expect) and the substring match are gone, this is a huge improvement. There is still an issue with compound keywords where the individual terms in the compound seem to trigger a match.

Try again Marburg.  That was fixed this morning and returns I think very good results now.

@SHARPSHOT   Pagination lately is driving me nutz as well on the site and I am fixing that immediately.

@FD  yeah we made some serious improvements but we are still not done here.  I have noticed that the new changes have been resulting in more sales even today so I am excited to see what starts to happen to conversions.  Keep your fingers crossed.  I will let you know as more tweaks AND filtering tools come out but i am open, like i said in email, to any ideas you have.

Glad to hear that. Before, it was indeed a buyer's inferno, especially with the OR. Your bounce rate should go down too, by less disappointed prospective buyers.

When I now look for "plane sunset", most matches are actually planes in a sunset, not planes AND sunset as before. Don't forget the other issues in the PM: those are buyer oriented improvements.

There is still an issue with "asian cook", which returns oriental dishes mostly on the first page. That's unavoidable without disambiguation but adding "person" to the string works fine: "asian cook person" returns mostly oriental cooks (person). If everybody added "person" and/or "nobody" to the relevant shots, buyer's lifes would be easier.

We just released another new tweak that photo buyers, image researchers and those looking to license vector files will hopefully like and use.

Filename search is functional on live. You can now search by watermark filename (which is what you get if you drag & drop the comp onto your desktop), and by the comp filename (if you click on download comp button). These should help photo buyers find the perfect image and illustrations faster at Cutcaster. Let us know what you think.

Just tested and released Boolean Operators for AND + OR.  Still working on NOT and have some more exciting things to release regarding advance search coming up.
