Title: DepositPhotos affiliate program
Post by: oboy on January 12, 2010, 17:15
As most probably already now, DepositPhotos has the Promo to pay $0.20 for each accepted image up to $100. Now they also have an affiliate program. Here my referral link if anyone is interested:

http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1001442 (http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1001442)

Commissions for attracting Photographers:
- $0.05 for each original photo your referral uploads for sale up to 1000 images
- $0.03 for each sale that your referral makes through a subscription

Commissions for attracting Buyers:
- 15% commission for each Pay-By-Credit purchase your referral makes
- You get the percent shown for each Subscription Plan purchased by your referral
  ( 10% - 1 month, 8% - 3 months, 6% - 6 months, 4% - 12 months )
- You earn the amount shown for each SMS package purchased by your referral
  ( $0.05 - SMS1, $0.10 - SMS2, $0.15 - SMS3, $0.20 - SMS4 )

Banners:
- $10 for placing a banner ad on your site (minimum three month)

Sounds quite interesting - I never came across affiliate program with the payment for the images simply upploaded by your referral...

And what about their promo? Did anybody try it?

Well, according to their rules you must have $50 for request - it will be a long time to have it only from referrals...

Maybe upploading images under their promo program is a good idea? They pay you "up to $100", plus referral money - in general it seems to be an interesting proposition.

There's no payment for referred contributors who sell by credits, only subscription. Doesn't that seem weird to anyone else?

Looking through the site, there's a few other issues which concern me.

The commission for a LARGE download via their SMS program is 24 cents. Yet on the Seller Price page (http://depositphotos.com/pages/seller-price (http://depositphotos.com/pages/seller-price)) "DepositPhotos is the internet’s highest-paying stock image website you’ll find!"

Also, exclusivity is for "selling photos", not just selling RF like other agencies. If you go exclusive there, you cannot sell any photos anywhere else.

And I'm still put off by the complete absence of any person's name on the site and in their email messages. The people behind it might be the nicest people in the world with only the purest of intentions, but they're not making it seem that way. I'm still very nervous about this one.
Title: Re: DepositPhotos affiliate program

But they do pump a lot of money into it. Money that they probably hope to get back from sales.

It seems to me there was their representative and there is the address on their site. All is opened. Or it is not enough for you?

I am new in this business, but they have called in me confidence. It is too much work and money to be swindle.  :-\

I have uploaded my photos and received money in my account. I am so happy. It is my first money in this business  :D
However, I have not enough photos to receiving 100$.

You have to leave the photos on there at least 6 months and if you do join you have to make sure you enter by hitting the P.P.P. button when you join to activate the program.
Well what do I got to lose.....maybe I'll actually make more money by just uploading than I do on Featurepics...lol

Hi,
Lee and I have already "debated" about Depositphotos on the RasmusRasmussen blog.
I agree with Lee about their not total transparency. The first approach was quite spammy.
On the other hand, I can give you some facts:
- I uploaded my photos and got my payout of 64$ (in a few days)
- Depositphotos is making an advertising campaign on my site. They bought three different kind of banners and payed in 2 days without problems.
- I've got my photos on a dozen of sites where I haven't see a penny in a year

I can't assure if they are safe or not, but make your choice... you know the bad and the good now ;-)

So, another affiliation link to feed that beast  http://submit.depositphotos.com/?ref=1001087 (http://submit.depositphotos.com/?ref=1001087)

Thanks rmarinello. That was helpful knowing someone has gotten money back from them. Like you said many of these sites we pour our images on are compltely dead ends, so if this ends up a dead end at least we made money on the uploads!

It makes me question "What's the catch?" I wonder if they are making sales from buyers? Has anyone gotten a payout from them yet or is it just numbers?

it's not so uncommon to pay for uploads.  Fotolia did that when they started too.

There's no payment for referred contributors who sell by credits, only subscription. Doesn't that seem weird to anyone else?

I think that is a wording problem?!  On their referrals page they have these headings for Referral Statistics
Referral
Uploading Files
Subscription Sale
Pay-by-Credit Purchase
Subscription Plan Purchase
SMS Package Purchase
Total By Month
Total By All Time

Which certainly makes it look like they pay for referral credit download sales as well.  But of course - time will tell.
edit:... hmm on second though - maybe you are right.  there doesn't seem to be a specific 'credit based' earnings spot, unless they mean to include all sales in  'subscription sale'

Yeah this does seem very low.  They are paying as low as 24% commission on these sales.

Also, exclusivity is for "selling photos", not just selling RF like other agencies. If you go exclusive there, you cannot sell any photos anywhere else.

Well noted, however I don't think going exclusive with DepositPhotos should be considered no matter what the terms are.

And I'm still put off by the complete absence of any person's name on the site and in their email messages. The people behind it might be the nicest people in the world with only the purest of intentions, but they're not making it seem that way. I'm still very nervous about this one.

I think what Lee was referring to was that they don't have a single name on their website - who is the owner, president, head of something or anything.  Also, in general email exchange they don't sign their emails with a name.  When conducting business, most people want to know WHO they are conducting business with - which individual person they are talking to.

Just don't be stupid like me and register through the promo link on the main page then upload your 5 photos then after they are approved upload 90 more  and get them approved before you realize you have to click on that promo tag on the photographers main page to activate it. I thought since I registered through the promo link on the main page that when I got throught the initial test upload it would already be on the promo, but I was wrong. Just want to make sure no one else gets caught by this.  I'm trying to get them to understand what happened. I still got over 200 waiting to be finished and another 30+ in pending. Hopefully they will understand what happened. Well see.

For those of you who have done this, did you show a balance immediately after the images' acceptance? I uploaded my first 90 a couple of days back- they were all approved but I'm showing no balance. I sent them a message to ask about this  but I thought I'd ask you all first before I get to uploading more. When I go to the PPP section, the promo window reads "already activated".

Thanks!

Yup...thats the catch 22. You can't activate the promo untill after your initial images are approved...BEFORE you upload any more. I did the same thing and am currently trying to get it resolved. I already had more thatn 90 approved which I won't get money for. I've got 30+ sitting in the pending bin and over 250 in the uploaded unfinished bin. This were uploaded before the activation and even thought they are not finished yet, I'm going to wait till I see what they say. Hopefully they will coroporate.

I guess I should have said don't upload any more untill you get some kind of answer about this. It is rather misleading. Mine said the same thing "already activated", but they say I didn't activate untill the 19th. Sure I'll post. They seem to be pretty quick about it. I'll post the two e-mails I already got from them in another post

Thanks!

It is misleading. The idea that it's set up like that is a little unsettling. If they want/need new images as badly as they seem to, you'd think they would let this slide and make a correction. I'm going to wait to upload anything else and may very well deactivate my uploaded images if they don't budge on this.

Here's the answer to the second e-mail I sent and their response
"Hello!

Program can't be activated automatically because it puts some restrictions
- you can't delete images approved under the action during 6 months, not
all of our authors accept this rules. So action can be activated only by
you after passing the exam. At the Promo page accessible even for
non-logined users all this rules are indicated
(http://depositphotos.com/pages/promo (http://depositphotos.com/pages/promo)).

From the time it's activated you'll have $0.2 for every accepted image (up
to 500 ones).

Have a good day!"

Why, it worked fine for me !!  I've even been paid for uploads of people who signed up through me as part of the affiliate program :)

Just remember to push the Join Program button AFTER you've been approved and BEFORE you upload !!

Then try uploading just a few and give them time to work through their system :)

I sent them an email about uploading before clicking the promotion code (I mentioned this earlier, but I uploaded my first 100- which were accepted-but I apparently didn't click the PPP in time.) Here's a portion of the email I received:

"If you agree with terms and rules of Promo Program we may add money for
the images already accepted: to do so we must have your consent. "

I returned the email saying I agreed. We'll see what happens. I should mention that while all of this was going on, I submitted more (AFTER I clicked the PPP button) and the balance showed up immediately for the subsequent images.

"Kelly,

Yes I agree to that. Since I thought I was signing up under your promotional I thought I was agreeing to that to begin with. I'm not exclusive with any other agency so it would not be a problem with the six month term. I have photos on several of the Big 6 sites so your conditions would be no problem with me. I can't thank you enough for your understanding in this manner. Next time I will be more careful.
Thank you again for your help. I have many more uploads to finish so I can get them on the site.

Well, in my oppinion everything is quite logical. They have no reason in paying you for image upploading if not to be sure they'll have your works for at least some time - and for some of professional stockers there can be no interest in loosing the control under their works.
And it's really good they give a posibility to moneyout immediately, - I faced with some new stocks that also made promo programs for sellers, but you couldn't have your money until your works are sold for some sum... As a rezult you only have a beautiful number on your computer, not money in your pockets.

The only thing they could do better is to show you a page of promo program with activation button when you enter the site after passing the exam - just to be sure you have read it and understood you wouldn't be payed before you activate it, so not to be in situation of donding. But the fact they promiced to pay for approved images makes me quite optimistic - as far as I understood while looking throug topics on this stock none of the members was deceived by them.

Bingo...they paid.
That definatly makes me more confident in their company and staff...that alone says alot about their view of the contributors which so many of the Big 6 don't anymore.

I could not find an affiliate link in this thread so here is mine http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1001512 (http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1001512).

That's a joke of course.  But the affiliate link is mine and works.

They do seem to be spending some marketing $$$ because I have seen their banners on many sites before the affiliate program was started (including my site Microstock Photography (http://www.MicrostockPhotography.com)).  This would at least say they have some cash to back the project.

I have given them a try and have been happy with the site and flow so far.  Lets hope they can bring the buyers when the site goes live.

My is in my referral links, but for some reason it doesn't work. I even copy and pasted it like they said to do on the site. I contacted support about it and hopefully they can fix the problem. Let's see if it works on this post.  http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1003098 (http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1003098)

You don't seem to have the url  tags in the right place !?

Copy the link, then select the hyperlink tag (globe), and inset your link in the middle of the 2 tags :)

Their reveiw process is pretty quick and they don't take just any photo. I tested the waters to see if they were picky and alot of the ones that had been rejected for."focus/composition" where also rejected here. I personlly think after they get the proper amount of exposure they will be successful. I think I finally got my referal link fixed below thanks to leaf ;D

Hi,
I started uploading to Deposit Photos about 2 months ago.
First 5 batches, 10 photos each, didn't ask for any money.
They're newbies, I'm a newbie, I thought to give them 50 uploads for free as a gesture of goodwill.
Acceptance rate on free uploads - 100 per cent.
I then activated the Promotion Bonus. Money started coming up in my account immediately.
Acceptance rate on paid uploads - 100 per cent still. No change there.

The site's web designing is beautiful.
The larger thumbnail processing is to die for. Images look gorgeous.
The upload process is one of the best I've seen so far.
Clearly these guys know what they're doing.

But of course nothing is perfect and there are a few problems to consider. Offices location, legal identity, connection with Deposit Files and so on.
I hope things will clear up in time, more photographers decide to join them and Deposit Files will make it up there.
I lilke them.

Inspection times are now getting longer (they're probably busy) and they're still buying 'easy' and selling 'easy', right on top of the front page.
'Easily' has already been suggested (FD Amateur) but no changes have yet been made.
Provided the legal aspects are healthy, broken English gets fixed and they don't sell out to Getty, I wish Deposit Photos best of luck.

Everything is running smoothly for me. So far I've had rejections for similar photos uploaded - I get the idea they allow two photos reasonably the same. I like the credits piling up without anything sold yet. I have four affialite members and I see I get credited for their uploads as well - about 25% of my earnings so far. I used Leaf's link, so Leaf, you are also making money of me!

I uploaded the 500 photos and got the $100 plus I stuck their banner on two blogs which gave me $10 each. It only took them one day to review the images .. 100% acceptance ratio .. requested the $120 payout and it was sitting in my paypal account the next day. I also made my first sale that same day. It's definitely worth checking out. The submission process is very well laid out as well. Submitting is much faster than with other sites. I hope this one sticks around.

Tyler, wouldn't it be better if MSG users had mechanism to include referral links as signature (other than manually add them)?
I think this would reduce amount of pimping posts that, honestly, are becoming annoying

yeah, people can use their regular signature pretty easily like Tom mentioned.  We could also (or instead) have a thing in our profile (like the portfolio links) where we enter referal info and have little icons or something to make it tidier.

I put the idea on the list

It's great to have it in your signature. However, if you just got approved by DP and have a new referral number, how else will anyone know you have it unless you are replying to someone's post or starting one of your own? No one will really see it unless you "pimp" it at least once. I'm waiting on mine, too.  ;D

I think that is a great idea leaf. I already have my referal in my signature area but I can still see other people continueing to post it in the message area. You know the bigger the better as far as advertising as being noticed is the way to go so I image it will still go on. Good Luck

I tried to submit a payout request today but the request was refused.

Problem was that pesty "$" sign, so . . . If you are making out a payout request don't use the Dollar Sign.

I must say Contributor Support at DepositPhotos is very good, returning an answer to my stupid question within the hour.

They must be getting picky now. 23 Images I had built up in the que were just shot down.

All of them were accepted at SS. The Photographs were accepted at DT too. These ranged from Fractals to Snow Pics to some textures. Only 2 had some type of explanations of Poor Lighting, White Balance...ect.  and the rest were "The image is not suitable for commercial use".

 ???

Keep trying to get the last $50 I guess. Maybe I should shoot a lot of similars since looking at their front page..they take them.

Edit... 2 were 3d renders and 1 raster illustration.

yes they are starting to get more picky now...well actually for me they were picky to begin with. There were some they rejected for compostion problems....lighting problems...that are on iStock as well as dreamstime, a couple of them being two of my big get that fromsellers on Istock...but after taking a real close look at them I could see where they are right in some cases . Some I did editing on and resubmitted and "most" of them went through the second time. I just upload a few at a time now.

I've got to admit...ever though I don't like rejections...I think it is a good sign this site may really take off with time simply because they aren't taking a bunch of snap shots, but taking good stock, unlike alot of these new stock sites. With decent stock it will attract more buyers when they start pushing for the customer side of it. I really think that was a smart move on their part. What better way to get the good inventory but to pay for it upfront???
Title: Re: DepositPhotos affiliate program
Post by: LSD72 on February 04, 2010, 13:18
Just for info... I did ask them about their Vector format since it is not clear in the FAQ. They want EPS8.

As far as snapshots... look through their recently submitted. I think it depends on who is reviewing at the time.

Yes I just looked and there does apppear to be some snap type images on there right now. I clicked on a few of the ones that I thought had that look to them in order to go to their portfolio and alot of the ones that are already in their port didn't look snap shotish. Maybe everyone is starting to scrape the bottom of their barrels trying to get to that magic 500 mark ::)

I don't watch my mouth for loud spammers, chap, that don't understand the concept of exclusivity.
Your "exclusive" image on Dreamstime (http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photos-cpus-image12400258) is also on bigstockphoto (http://www.bigstockphoto.com/photo/view/6679675), fotolia (http://www.fotolia.com/id/19525480), istockphoto (http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-11606745-cpus.php) and 123RF (http://www.123rf.com/photo_6174568.html).

FYI: I didn't spy for it since I blocked you a long time ago, but a long term reviewer (that wishes to remain anonymous) on one of those sites sent me a message about it. Some reviewers have memories like an elephant.  ;)

Happy shooting! (no reply needed)

They are trying to get their photos there first so when they start getting the buyers there, then they won't look at it like "There isn't much there so I ain't gonna waste my time" They are wanting the inventory before they try to bring in the buyer. I really believe they are doing this right. You can't open the door without having the inventory. I really believe they are going to be successful.

Yeah, they are really cruising on approvals - it seems to be only taking a few hours for them to go through review.  No sales for me either yet, but I just finished uploading my 500 images for $100 (http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1003098) and it took me 4 hours - about 3/4 with releases.  It isn't the fastest system, but OK.

I am getting some income registered now for my one referral. The other one is having a little difficulty getting accepted. I guess when they reject some of your first five you have to wait three days to submit anymore. She she may take awhile to get things going. So, things are moving a little now. Could still use some more referrals, though,  ;)

My referral link (http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1003098) :)

The cruising has a side effect of weird rejects - I received several "bad isolation" ones for photos that are not isolated at all. Not that I care much, but...

Been there for 2 days, 600 images online, one sale and some cash from a referal. What are you waiting for? Upload 500, get 100 bucks! (http://submit.depositphotos.com?ref=1005730)

Well, the cruising-on-approvals part hasn't happened for me yet. It's taking a day or so to get the ones I have pending reviewed. I guess that is still fast compared to most of the other agencies out there, so no complaints here. Granted, I'm not uploading as many as most of you guys are, either, just a handful at a time. I'm finding they are not taking any of my abstracts or fractal-type uploads at all. Not sure why, though. It says they aren't of commercial value. However, they are approving others, so not sure what the difference is. Hmmmmm....

Don't feel bad, I have gotten some for that also. just so you know you aren't alone.  ;)
I don't think they use the rule of thirds. Most of the ones excepted are dead on center. If there is even something that is cut off on the edge they reject that...that is the composition rejections.

Just a notice to those who do Raster Illustrations (fractals and the like), from my experience they have accepted very few.  "No commercial value" being the  reason for rejection.

Just to let you know . . . . . . . .

all and all they rejected about 100 of my raster illustrations, . . . . . oh well, some take 'em some don't.

My fractals are rejected too. And rejection for to similar to other images in my portfolio. But overall the approval rate is ok. Now I am just waiting for my first sale and maybe some referral clicks.

I tried to upload some images to deposit photos to get my $.20's

First 100 or so got all accepted. From the next 300 or so, I got about 50 rejections. What I learned: Any studio background other than white (for example green, blue or yellow) gets rejected with note "improper background".

I also got a bunch rejected for "improper isolation" (those images were not meant to be isolated in any way...)

Okay, I'll just send them 150 of my boring "isolated on white" stuff and collect my $100.

Yes if you've got a single object and it isn't on bright white, then they do reject it. I had quite a few rejected that way. A couple of them I came back and isolated on a pure white background then they accepted them.

I had the same problem, the exact rejection reason is:

Background does not correspond to industry standard.
The image has to be clearly separated from the background. The background of the image has to contain natural colors. We recommend using black or white backgrounds such as those used in a studio. If different color background is used it has to harmonize with the picture. Please keep in mind that if necessary the background has to be easily separated from the picture by its end users.

So if u now go to the Promotion tab, half way down your screen it should say :   Promotion Program Already Activated

Is that there !?  If so you're now in :)

How many files have u got accepted, if it's just the 18 then not worth worrying, otherwise u could email for them to be included in program.

Any from now, any accepted should show in your totals ;)   Glad to be of assistance :)

Is there a link on the DepositPhotos site that shows your referrals?

I haven't been able to find one. Perhaps I don't have a referral yet so it doesn't show? If there is one ... does it show your individual referrals or just a total of how many you have?

Because there is no such link on Affiliate program tab at DepositPhotos (there is only link to main site) I emailed to support and they told me I should use this link.

Link to my portfolio with referral:
http://depositphotos.com/portfolio.php?id=1002040&ref=1002040 (http://depositphotos.com/portfolio.php?id=1002040&ref=1002040)

You can change numbers to your ID and you will be ready to go.
Also I have been told that it is possible to use &ref=your_id anywhere on site, not only on main page.
I hope this helps. ;)
