Title: New promotion deal, Free images for bloggers
Post by: NancyCWalker on September 20, 2011, 07:16
From the webiste http://depositphotos.com/for-bloggers.html (http://depositphotos.com/for-bloggers.html)

Sponsorship by Depositphotos
Depositphotos has a unique program for bloggers and websites dedicated to design, advertising and stock photography.
If you operate a blog or website and are looking for some fresh new images, or are willing to hold a contest that offers real prizes, we want to be your sponsor. For prizes, we can provide temporary subscriptions to our site, offering free downloads of high-quality images. In return, we’d like you promote our site and your contest using interesting articles or useful reviews of Depositphotos, including information such as prices, the variety of payment options and subscription plans, the new pay-by-SMS option, and the wealth and diversity of images available. The article or review must be unique and must contain at least one link to our site with one appropriate keyword (such as "photo stock", "buy images", "stock images", "Depositphotos", etc.). Copying text from our site or other sources, either fully or partially, is prohibited. The number of prizes we can offer will be decided on a case-by-case basis, and will depend on the number of visitors and the level of your blog or site according to the www.alexa.com (http://www.alexa.com) rating. When you apply, one of our representatives will review with you the options that apply to your site or blog.

If deposit photos has a free section to which contributors have placed their images, and those are the images they are giving away free, then no problem. If deposit photos ASKS PERMISSION from specific contributors to use their images for free, as "promotion" (ah, we're back to giving away images with the promise of future business), then that's ok.

I don't see how they can give away contributor's images for free in any other case. Unless, of course, there is wording in their Contributor Agreement stating that they can use your images for promotion for free, anytime they choose. Which may well be the case.

They don't make the specifics clear, at least in the snippet you posted. I did not (and will not) go to the blog and read.

I'm not with DP so I don't know about their t&c. (Of course, iStock is forcing us all to opt our images in for free promotions).

I'm just concerned about the amount of image copying that goes on in the blogosphere.

This really concerns me.  I have just finished getting the bulk of my portfolio on DP.  Now they want to give it away?  what???

I presume they still pay us?  I don't want to give bloggers free images but if DP are paying me, it's OK.

I presumed the opposite.  Hope you are right though :)

Yeah, they don't make those important specifics very clear, do they? And even if they say you will get paid, how will you be able to tell, they certainly won't flag those giveaway images for you.

What's to stop us testing it?  If sites say they will pay us and they don't, they will get in to real problems.  But we don't know if they are paying us yet, so this is already a mess.  I wish they would keep us informed.

Yesterday after receiving letter from Depositpotos I wrote to their support asking who will pay for this images, here is the answer:
"We sure will pay for every image downloaded using subscription, no matter if this subscription was purchased or given for free. The same we do for Free Trial subscription - photographer receives payment for every image."

And I found that fotolia has the same option for bloggers

Of course we are being paid.. how do you think DP became a better seller than veer and BigStock on the ranking? this is how.. images are given away for free and we are being paid.. If I wasn't paid I would remove my images in a heart beat no matter how long it took to upload them..

How long do you think they'll pay you for images they're giving away for free, or if you are being paid for all of the give aways. Surely based on this sites history you've got to be worried.

They did have a free trial for a very long time now and still have. And they pay for the imags they are giving away there too. So...i donīt get the fuss. Itīs a promotion thing, that doesnīt really effect photographers. At least not in a negative way. If lots of bloggers use it, they can use images at will that they donīt have to worry about, since they get them for free and that the photographers get their pay for as well. So if i had a big portfolio there, itīd be pretty chummed to hear about this.

As a matter of fact, I am seeing an improvement in credit sales lately. Usually I get mostly subs, but this month I think I'll get a BME in credit sales.

Thanks for posting this.  I am relieved to see that we are still being paid for the downloads.  No complaints from me then.  :)

I'll remind you of this in a few months when the next 'image sleuth' thread appears about a contributor with a portfolio full of other folks images  :P

They will pay until their investors money runs out and then the investor will want to see a good return.  I don't think you need 3 guesses to work out where that money will come from :)  No doubt they will also want to move their commissions more in-line with istock and FT.

You may very well be right about that, but let's face it - stuff gets stolen from all the micros already.  I avoid those sleuthing threads generally.  It seems pointless to get upset about things that are completely beyond our control.  Only way to keep our images totally safe is to keep them locked away on the hard drive...

I remember other sites running promotions where the contributors share was cut.  At least DP is eating the cost of this promotion and paying us for the downloads.

The ranking is a poll not verified, people from DP could raise the poll number to make it look better. I don't believe it.

Yes! Sign me up for my 7-day Free Trial Subscription with 5 images per day absolutely free!

I just discovered this on deposit photos... And now I understand why we get some many ''subscription'' sales... Hope they don't continue this indefinitely. My main job is have a graphic design company. Reading this, i'd say... Hell why go to istock, shutterstock, fotolia or any other to buy my images? When I have a need, I just need to go there, create an account, (fake or not) and download for 7 days... When it expires, we'll i'll just create another account...

(Mind I will not do it out of respect), but this won't stop others. At least we do get some small contribution for this but... I find it's a weird way to promote a site. Give hamburgers for free and you'll have 200 buyers a day... Charge 1.00$ and you'll be left with 25 buyers who are unhappy about paying 1.00$ since they got used to free ;)

Iīm a designer myself. I used the free trial on DP. You need to register the free trial with your paypal account and with a cc on that paypal account. So, itīs not just the matter of giving a junk email and registering an account everyday - you can only get as many free trials as you have creditcards  :P.
