In that case don't use them to sell your products and if you have a portfolio with them delete it.

There you go again, too easy and correct. No fun... What if I want to belong to some crap agency that has lousy sales, low prices, low commissions and seems slippery besides.

Then what?

The original topic was about prices, not royalties, but even if we compared royalties, I assume you realize the above isn't the whole story, and thus not a reasonable comparison.

I have never supplied DepositPhotos - not ethical in their approach when they first contacted me plus their history as a file sharing site - but if I look at December for SS, my return per download is 98.8 cents $1.01 (and I get 38 cents per sub same as everyone else in the top tier)

Anyone want to share DepositPhotos' RPD for December 2019 (on a decent number of sales)?

(edited after the December books closed at SS to show the final RPD for the month)

Ooops, sorry, you are right, I Have read too fast.

Btw RPD isn't the whole story either ;)
Except for very small agencies with few sales that I still support because RPD can reach more than $5.

Algorithms and competition decide nowadays...

But DP do special deals from time to time which are MUCH cheaper. Which is why I buy from them when I need an image. And the photog earns something. OK, lots of the BEST images aren't on DP but if I had to pay SS rates, I would have to make do with all my own photos, and the photog would earn nothing.
If I was rich, or ran a big company where top quality really mattered, then yes, much of the best stuff is elsewhere and I would choose another site.
That's the reality of it.

its about 30c so less than 1/2 of shutterstock for me. These days only Bigstock is worse and RF123 very similar. Not that I have many sales.

Yes, their prices are about half what Shutterstock's price.  I deleted all my photos there.  I control my price.

I earned the unbelieveable amount of 59 Dollars for one picture in december on Deposit!!! (so the buyer must have paid around 166 Dollars for my picture).

I had only a very few sales with less than 3 $ altogether on Deposit before and couldnt believe my eyes when the mail came in telling me I earned 59 Dollars

Made the payout right away and got the money just before christmas  ;D

Whether it's RPD, RPI or just revenue, DP is the worst of the platforms I upload to.

After careful consideration, I finally decided to stay for another reason: personal advertisement.

I have noticed, indeed, that several of the buyers I had on DP were major news website from Balkans. Therefore, I am punctually using this as some references to my clients outside of the microstock world. It's indeed slightly less glorious than Alamy thanks to whom I can add references like BBC, Wired or The Independent, but on the local market, it's actually something pretty marketable.

That being said, one day or another, I think this will have to stop.

My RPD on DP was $0.40 for December....I don't really like DP, but they sell reasonably well: 2/3rd of the sales consists of subscription sales, 1/3rd is On Demand.

It is 0.33 on Depositphotos for me. But, with a fraction of files (haven't uploaded the whole portfolio for the obvious reasons there) it almost outperforming my number 4 - 123rf. But, it is more because of 123rf sinking abnormally fast.

It's easy to undercut on price, anyone can sell their work cheaply, this is not the way forward, a race to the bottom is of no value to contributors.

Quality as they say always sells and is the only way forward and part of this is to increase the commission to contributors as Adobe done.

Shutterstock should do the same, as overall this encourages contributors to produce better work.

Ten years from now, Getty which is a prime example of a price cutter is going to be struggling to have quality content.

Shutterstock's next move should be to increase their prices and the commission rate to contributors, the basic download commission should be around 45 cents.
