From eMail:

Congratulations on becoming a member of our Special Program for contributors!

From now on, in addition to your regular income from selling files on our platform, youll receive 40% of net revenue for files downloaded under a Depositphotos subscription. Your royalties will be awarded in aggregate at the end of each month.

If a photo or vector image is purchased with any of our Subscription Plans, your royalty rate is fixed and depends solely upon your Contributor's Level.

Contributors who participate in the Revenue Share Special Program will share 40% of net subscription revenue. Royalties are prorated among Contributors according to the proportion of their files in individual subscribers downloads, with increased earnings for those at higher Contributors Levels. Royalties for files downloaded under the Program are awarded in aggregate at the end of each month.

Did you have to opt-in, or was this automatic?

I was opted in automatically. Is there any way to opt out?

When the opted me in October 202, I sent them an email telling them to remove all my files from that program  - They got back to me in 90 minutes saying: "We will exclude you from the Revenue Share Program shortly. "

And they did.

I did the Live chat, and requested an opt-out, she said 'Sure' and I was opted out immediately. She didn't give an explanation, but she did acknowledge everyone was opted in automatically. "But you can opt out at any time."

Yeah well, it's still shady and unethical.

I still don't understand what is the main idea about this new program ?

I still don't understand what is the main idea about this new program ?

They offer an unlimited download option for customers where they can download as many images as they want. I do not know the price for it, but let's say it costs $300 per month. Depositphotos gets 60% of this, so $180. The remaining 40%, so $120, go into the revenue share pot and get divided between all contributors that take part in the program, depending on how many images the customer downloaded from them. So, let's say the customer downloads 20.000 images. That's $120 divided thorugh 20.000 = 0.006$. That's the revenue a contributor gets per downloaded image. And the number gets lower for contributors the more images the customers downloads (as the $ number is divided through more images), while it always stays the same for depositphotos, because they take their 60% share from the whole price the customer pays for the unlimited subscription. A customer could theoretically download your whole port and you would only get cents for all of it.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong. It has been a while since I read up these terms and the link in the new e-mail doesn't lead me anywhere but the contributor information page that does not even mention the Revenue-Sharing-model anywhere.

EDIT WITH CHAT W/DP:

Me: Is the income described in addition to the revenue that I get now or does it replace what I get now?

DP: Yes, the Revenue Share Special Program was launched to increase our contributors' sales. It is just an additional source of income and clients for you.

All your files being sold by regular subscriptions or On-Demand downloads will still be paid for in accordance with our general terms https://depositphotos.com/seller-price.html

Me: Under subscription, I currently receive $0.XX per download - that stays the same?

DP: Yes. All your files being sold by regular Subscriptions or On-Demand downloads will still be paid for in accordance with our general terms

Me: Where does the additional income come from?

DP: It's a special plan we offer to some of our customers. The program introduces your whole portfolio to them.

Me: I see. How do the customers qualify?

DP: It's the special plan our sales department offers to some of our customers. Unfortunately, I can not answer the question regarding the qualification system

Contributors who participate in the Revenue Share Special Program share 40% of net subscription revenue. Royalties are prorated among Contributors according to the proportion of their files in individual subscribers downloads, with increased earnings for those at higher Contributor Levels.

Royalties for files downloaded under the Program are awarded in aggregate at the end of each subscription period (month).

Also, you can opt-out anytime. Just let us know if you decide to and we will be glad to help you out.

Me: Ok, so to recap, nothing is changing with respect to the per subscription rate I currently get?

DP: Correct. All your files sold by regular Subscriptions or On-Demand downloads will still be paid for per our general terms. The Revenue Share Special Program is just an additional source of income for you.

I don't contribute to Deposit Photos, but just wanted to point out that you should give close to zero weight to the claim that this is additional income for contributors.

In time, the likelihood is that all/most subscriptions will be part of this all-you-can-eat buffet and other sources of credit/subscription revenue will shrink. It has worked this way even with "regular" subscriptions introduced years ago at sites that sold on a credit system - in the end it was mostly subscriptions (Dreamstime for example).123rf started out this way (again, years ago) and switched to a minimum subscription payout because a lot of contributors threatened to remove their portfolios if they didn't pay a decent amount per download.

The deal is so bad for contributors because it means the agency's interests and the contributor's are at odds - if the program is popular, the contributors are scr3*ed and the agency is happy the more people sign up as they get their 60% up front and regardless of what's downloaded.

As far as limiting who can sign up for this, does anyone recall the late unlamented Dollar Photo Club (search for that here if not) and how it was supposedly only for a select few but was in effect limited to whoever wanted to sign up.

If contributors opt portfolios out this program cannot succeed.

Interesting. I doubt there's any qualification at all.

Good Point and history supports that opinion.

Just a warning to all the people who contacted DP and told them to be removed from the revenue share program and were told they were removed: Please double check. I was told I was removed, I had disabled my photos when I was put in the program against my will and yesterday I enabled some photos as a check: They are all IN the revenue share program.
When you go to your dashboard at https://de.depositphotos.com/files.html and look at the columns right after the earnings column there is a column for the revenue share program where it says "yes" or "no" and it says "yes" for all my files.
So pay attention to this in case DP lied to you or just put you right back in as they did with me.

A reminder for those who've been licensing stock for a while, and a history lesson for those who are new to this, it isn't the first time that Deposit Photos has claimed to have opted contributors out of a spectacularly bad deal but then secretly opted them back in again...

I am not a DepositPhotos contributor but out of curiosity, were at least some of you able to opt out this program a second time? And do you remain opted out? That is incredibly sneaky of this agency to place contributors back into this program after they asked to be removed from it.

Ah great to hear that you have remained opted out since the last mail. I'll have to be super vigilant if and when I sign up with these guys.
