Title: Activating G+ Authorship - Anyone done it?
Post by: THP Creative on July 15, 2013, 18:19
DT has had this feature to exclusives for a while, but now its open to all.

I am wanting to soon have my Symbio site connected with G+ for authorship, so I am wondering if linking my DT portfolio will negate any good for my Symbio site if I go ahead and do it?

Anyone already done this step? Anyone know more about it, how it works?

I just activated it, but I don't think you will gain anything from it.

What is "enhanced authorship recognition?"
I just got an email invitation to "connect" my DT Account to my G+ account.  I'm not even sure what G+ is.
Is this a good thing?

My understanding is that Google Plus ( G+) is googles facebook kinda thing.  Authourship is a way for G+ to see what you have authoured all over the net.

I can't see how this will hurt your SYS site... but then there are a lot of things I don't understand.

Another Social Network. From Google which is taking over the world. You have to sign up.

Google+ (pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus) is a multilingual social networking and identity service owned and operated by Google Inc. It is the second-largest social networking site in the world, having surpassed Twitter in January 2013.

Thanks for the response(s).  This seems to be much like the FB thing where "friends" share their sales, thereby promoting Dreamstime and pissing "friends" off at the poster.   ;D

It's hard to say if activating Google+ authorship on image sales pages is really a good idea at this point, since the feature is still fairly new and there's not a lot of hard data on the SEO results.  A couple of points to consider:

1.) This might modify the display of your image on Google to show your G+ profile image next to the search result.

This makes a lot of sense for a news story or blog article and Google says that it can increase the click-through rate (CTR) of the result - especially if you have a pretty face!  However, it's very possible that this can decrease CTR for ecommerce items, since at a glance the searcher might think the result is just an article or opinion piece and not something to buy.  My speculation is that these results could be unconsciously skipped when a buyer is looking for an item on a search engine, similarly to how our eyes have been trained to scan past ads without seeing them.

2.) This provides a claim of ownership on the image.

Although I don't know if they've outright stated it yet, it's very possible that Google will start using authorship in the future to collapse similar results and give higher priority to "claimed" pages and images.  In the case of multiple claims, it would make sense to give highest priority to the first authorship claim, although who knows if this is how it will really work.  With that in mind,  if you have your own portfolio site or self-hosted storefront, it's worth considering whether you would really want to enable authorship at an agency such as DT unless you can prioritize your contributing sites on your G+ profile.

I know this is an old thread, but having set up Google Authorship for my Symbiostock site - and written a blog post about it last month (http://www.digitalbristles.com/image-authorship-with-google/) - I just did another blog about tying in with the agencies where possible. You can read the blog post and see some screen shots of the results here (http://www.digitalbristles.com/getting-our-names-with-our-images-in-the-search-wilderness/).

Anyone who claims authorship or likes or tweets in the favour of exploiting agencies completely lost his mind IMHO. Keep this last power we have for your own site or the very few agencies that deserves it.

"Crazy he calls me..."

The idea behind this - and it's to be seen whether it's crazy or not - is to benefit us and our sites, not the agencies. They have eyeballs and search position and I think we can use that to our advantage.

But there is no way any agency could make this happen without our consent or participation, so it's easy for anyone who doesn't feel it benefits them to just not make those connections

Okay sorry! I obviously misunderstood the deeper concept in some of these uses. Facebook likes of sites  like Fotolia still are hard to understand for me.
