It looks like DT is changing Stock Free Images from being completely free to just mostly free. Users will be given a set number of completely free downloads, and after that they must get a subscription for anything beyond the web sized images. The fee is small, but the hope is that it may introduce prospective buyers to the idea that images have monetary value and that licensing them is a safer plan that simply downloading from random sites. I'm sure we've all received that email. Some people (not I!) must opt to give them away rather than delete them.

Free images are good when these are EVERYWHERE free. But the DT system may be tricky to some and there are at least 2 ways to let images unintentionally free (one at uploading and the other when removing the 4+ yr unsold images).
It's not good for the industry - from the point of view of the buyers - to see an image for sale at every agency and for free at DT.
I saw many images @DT being free and the similar ones being sold for credits. I guess the free ones were rejected as similar, but in this case it does not mean that the rejected image does not qualify as stock...

I'm sure we've all received that email. Some people (not I!) must opt to give them away rather than delete them.
There are three options available with old non-selling images: 1. Give away for free, 2. Let DT re-keyword (for a fee) and 3. Delete the image. All anyone needs to do is go into their profile and set the default to delete. Then whenever you get this e-mail you can simply ignore it unless you deliberately want to give it away or have DT do some keywording work.

I believe that the re-keywording option was removed some time last year. People who used to have that as their default action may want to make sure that images are now either be deleted or donated as desired.

I think the change is an improvement. I would rather see the people hunting for freebies only get the web-size for free and have to pay to get the larger sizes. I also like that DT promotes its paid collection on the free site and reports that a significant portion of freebie hunters become paid buyers.
I'm not a huge fan of free, but it at least sounds like DT is doing it intelligently as a genuine attempt to bring in paid sales.

No, there is still the option to pay to keep your images online and let someone who knows nothing about the subject matter do a "better" job of keywording than you did.

That option has been deleted. Some sneak through if the server isn't working right but all old files with no downloads cannot be re-keyworded. The wording hasn't been removed from the page like it should have been but that option was removed.

Some photos are keymastered (uploaded by many new contributors who pay for the service) with little and sometimes no information so keymasters often have to guess, it's not that they think they know more about the subject matter. The ones that were allowed to be re-keymastered often had tons of words in them that had nothing to do with the subject. No wonder they didn't sell.

that's a weird site though, cos they aren't all free. if you do a search or click "more" you just get directed to DTs site to buy the image (not a bad thing of course).
