"...The search takes into account the quality of the image, performance of the contributor, exclusivity, buyers experience, editors opinion and many others..."

Well, we shall see how that experiment turns out. Good luck to all of us. Perhaps it is time to trim my DT portfolio to become this lean, mean, picture-machine (sorry George could not resist).

Well I have been pleased with my progress at DT since joining on 31st Jan; gradually increasing portfolio size and gradually increasing weekly total downloads; a nice progression.

Yesterday was the first day in a long time without any downloads, and coincides with the new search mechanism.  My portfolio is 'clean' and I have an 80% acceptance rate; nonetheless, whenever agencies change their search algorithms it seems that hard earned progress tends to come to a dead end.

I hope that over time the new search will improve my progress, but perhaps there will be some pain to experience first.

I don't understand the "performance" thing yet and I have jsut asked about it again at the forum.

Anyway, today I had 3 good sales of $1 and $2.  If only I had that everyday...

Regards,
Adelaide

Dreamstime looked like going through the ceiling for me up until March, but April was very disappointing, even considering easter, and May hasn't started particularly well either, at least not compared to others.

"...The search takes into account the quality of the image, performance of the contributor, exclusivity, buyers experience, editors opinion and many others. Because editors or contributors may be subjective, we let the customers' experience play the most important role and improve the ranking. We believe it to be 100% objective in regards to the stock value of an image. [my italics]"

Does this mean that DT is instituting a customer review system, where customers rate images which they have downloaded?

The reference to 'exclusivity' which Read_My_Rights first noticed is a bit troubling to me (as I am not exclusive), but it sounds like exclusivity may be lightly weighted in the new system. If the new search system results in users finding the better images then I am for it.

My own sales on DT were a bit above average today.

I believe that BUYERS that buy a lot (and by inverence are the most experienced) attach a higher weight to the images that they are downloading compared to the one time buyer. Download numbers are therefore not weighted equal anymore.

My suggestion: make some friends with big time buyers - who incidently are probably going to be the ones that are subscribers. Perhaps this aspect improves the ranking of pictures that are DLed via subscription.
Just my 0.002 pesos.

Yesterday I had no sales.  Today around 4 o'clock I had 2 - but one was dated YESTERDAY.   ???

I am guessing it might work like this:  The buyer searches for apple, and then buys image X, tommorow image X will shop up higher in the results for apple than it did today.  No buyers EVER buy image Y when searching for banana, I think it will slowly sift down to the bottom of the pile.

Ouch.

I usually have more success than this, and had 6 out of 8 rejected for a new reason (to me anyhow!)...  Generic and not exactly helpful at all...

There are several vital requirements that an image must meet in order to be stock oriented. An image must serve a purpose, must have a concept, must have a good technical execution in terms of composition, exposure, light setting, optical performance.  Creativity is a keyword for a successful stock image, as well.

I'm pretty used to rejection, :'( but it felt a little to me like SS.  Annoy the reviewer with the first or second image and they hit the same function key to reject everything else for same reason.  The same non-specific rejection.  I guess I'll need to stagger future uploads!

... must have a concept  Perhaps they have reached a saturation point in their database where categories are full and now they need only highly imaginative and well executed themes?

I guess I need to put the keyword "creativity" into all of my images then  ;D

You are proabably right.

If so, then the new DT search is not very different from the SS Most Popular filter, which is the default search there. A difference would be the weight which SS gives to exclusivity (whcih, of course, SS does not offer). I wonder how much weight it is.

EDIT: I stand corrected.

Default search on Shutterstock is by newest first, not most popular.

That is incorrect.  Default search on SS is by Most Popular.  It was changed last summer.
