Title: Request for web extended license (W-EL)
Post by: Dodie on January 28, 2018, 06:17
Can anyone please enlighten me how does this work?

I received 4 requests like this today and they keep coming but I don't see any new downloads.
Are these buyers just playing with us or they do buy something at the end?

Now another one. Should I report this or it is normal?
I think the emails I get are triggered but the buyers options making DT sent out an automatic email.
Thanks for any input.

edit: and another.

Had one too. Looks like someone is buying large scale to make digital products for resale if you ask me...

It's just they are all different subjects, from backgrounds to food, construction work, Christmas decorations.....seams very suspicious. I hope they will not accuse me that I did it myself, like it happened to other contributors here with another agency.

They are still coming, now it's flowers. This cannot be true.

Could be someone is serious about acquiring material for unlimited resale - webtemplates.

I received one but what surprised me was when I went to enable it on the Dreamstime site  I found that about half of my portfolio had ELs disabled.
I usually enable them at upload.

I had a dozen or so, mainly of older stuff. I just deleted the emails. Obvious sham of some sort.

I have 8 of them now, not all but most of them have 0 dowloads at DT, so from my part they can have them. They make no money anyway if they just sit there.
I am very curious how will this end?

Could be,
He took a pause for an hour or so, then he came back for more. Could also be that he is not done yet selecting what he wants.
Of course that doesn't mean that he will buy something.

I got 3 over a seven hour span. Just letting them sit for now. Particularly suspicious that it is over a weekend.
Title: Re: Request for web extended license (W-EL)
Post by: Jo Ann Snover on January 28, 2018, 11:31
I had seven over a roughly four hour span. I enabled the licenses and will see what happens. I've saved the emails so it'll take next to no time to set them all back in a couple of days if no one buys - and I agree it's not all that likely.

It's an odd scam if it's a scam - if you weren't on the level, you'd just download the images as a subscription and use them however you wanted. The images were all different subjects. None were best sellers. If it was a hack of some kind, I can't imagine how this could be used.

I'd think the most likely explanation is some sort of software problem on DT's end that was supposed to be doing some sort of maintenance and sent out these emails by mistake :)

Sounds liek someone may be trying to hack the system, and figure out some kind of vulnerability. If they are still doing it, I'd say they haven't found one 'yet'...

OR... it could be some new kind of webscraper/serach engine/etc - that when it visits those pages, "triggers" the request. (It doesn't actually plan on making a purchase, just wants to scrape the content).

I can remember at some point being p*ssed about a third party deal and turning something off but I don't ever remember turning off EL's.  It looks like my four newest are still turned on, but after a random search I can't find any type of EL enabled in the rest.

My EL's are all off also and they were set to on.

Maybe they are trying to fix the function and that is what's causing the email requests.

Title: Re: Request for web extended license (W-EL)
Post by: Jo Ann Snover on January 29, 2018, 01:31
I turned all my ELs off ages ago when they started offering ELs as part of some subscription deal and I received one for a few dollars royalty.

I guess I'll need to check and make sure ELs stay off whenever this problem gets fixed (i.e. I hope they don't just turn everyone's on to address the problem some are having where their ELs were previously on and are now magically off).

I typically turn on an EL request as long as it says its for credits. Most of the time there's a purchase, but  not always. As I have had more EL requests during the day today (and the total number of requests for all of us is now beyond anything that makes sense) I have turned back off the few I turned on first thing this morning.

I think email to contributors would be a good idea for those who haven't come to this forum or the DT ones, but I don't see anything yet...

I've sent an email to support when I opened this thread (more than 24 hours) and they didn't bother to answer. How can we expect them to notify everyone?
At least now we know where we stand with this issue.

It's a weird bug to continue over time on random images.  I wonder what process they were trying to run.

Indeed it is. Perhaps an 'encourage all the people who opted out of ELs to re-enable them' kind of process?

I got about 40 and turned a few on. Then I thought this was time consuming and odd. So I looked on the MSG forum. Seems I'm not alone and this is a bad joke, a bug or scam. I'll delete those messages. I have no time to mess with it anyway.

https://www.dreamstime.com/terms.php#extended (https://www.dreamstime.com/terms.php#extended)

You can read there about each extended license - two involve types of exclusivity and the rest do not

While they were "fixing the bug", I just made a filter to delete all emails from *@dreamstime.com

I got more than 300 of those, I didn't have the time to wait for their engineers to fix it. I'll leave the filter still on tho, never got anything useful from them anyway *shrugs*

And now Ive just received another e-mail from Dreamstime. This one is requesting a P-EL license for the very same image. Seems odd that someone would want both a print license and a web license for the same photo. I thought it would usually be one or the other (assuming it's the same client.)

Okay....may as well enable these options and see what happens. Is anyone else getting these kinds of e-mails currently?

I got an email from [email protected] wich is from March.22, landed in spam,

A potential buyer would like to purchase one of your files with exclusive rights SR-EL.

I have 72h to remove them from other agencies, well that would take more than 72h,

The image sells very well, dont know what to do.

I don't think selling the rights is worth it on the long term, 1 year or 3 year exclusivity might be.

https://www.dreamstime.com/level.php?lvlimag=1#1 (https://www.dreamstime.com/level.php?lvlimag=1#1)

1 year exclusivity   any   SR-EL1   any   image based
as low as $62.5 per image

3 years exclusivity   any   SR-EL3   any   image based
as low as $150 per image

Sell the rights   any   SR-EL   any   image based
as low as $250 per image

The image is my bestseller across all agencies, i could easily re create if i choose to sell the rights, but im affraid no matter how similar i shoot another one, it would not sale as this one...

Im quite new to microstock so this numbers for EL $ are tempting  :D

Not in the same situation myself, but I'd say, the offer would need to equal the earnings of the image for the next few years, before I'd do anything. Considering the downs of the Microstock market, maybe matching the past 3 years earnings, isn't so bad.

But if you are new, you don't know what that is.

I keep forgetting to say I'd sell rights as an option on DT. $67 for something that doesn't earn $50 every three years wouldn't be a bad deal.

Bird in the hand...  :)

I'd be a bit careful about shooting something too similar though. I'm not sure about the legality but thats not really in the spirit of exclusive rights and if I were the buyer I would be after you.

You mean I couldn't flip it, change the color balance and make the green into blue? Oh that's Shutterstock, how to make one image into 100 images. Nevermind.  ;)

Yes I suppose depending on the content and how unique it is, making another after selling the rights would be against best practices and maybe legally wrong. Customer could come back for a refund and then damages.

Selling the rights would be up front and if the terms aren't enough compensation to offset the real future earnings, go with what the majority here has said. Don't do it.

Only the owner and artist can decide, "am I going to take a large lump sum, right now, or wait for maybe making many smaller sales over time"
