Title: Subscriptions... Is there a way to opt out?
Post by: Nemo1024 on June 28, 2008, 05:46
I don't think I like subscriptions, in fact, I think I start to strongly dislike them. I had just now my second subscription sale on DT - It was my 180 degree Tallinn Panorama (8264x2927, used half a day to create it), sold in maximum size for 30 cents. Right after that a Small regular sale of powerline fixtures (10 minute job) sold for 50 cents. Where is justice in it?!

Is there a way of opting out of DT subscriptions (like in IS). I am stillopted in on IS subscription program, because I didn't have a single sub sale there, so I am hedging, while subs in DT start to look counterproductive...

No, there is no opt out option at DT.

Unfortunately Fotografer is right, and DT is not even open to discuss the subs model (such as limiting sizes or charging more according to the image level).

But you can downsize your images to 3MP. You will feel better when you get $0.30 (or less) for 3MP subs download than for full size 16MP.

Which means that you then miss out on having credit sales at large sizes.

Yes and it's not a big lose. Majority of my sales at DT are for 1 or 2 credits or subscriptions (usualy max size). My RDP is dropping. I feel much better losing some credits than having subs for large files.

Nemeo 102
Once you reach 500 or more photos you will notice that credit
sales will out weight subs.

Really?? Can you show mathematically how that happens? I have over 900 images online at DT, and the subs share of my sales is increasing steadily. It's now around 50%.

My DT portfolio is 1357 images. This month has been bad for subs - meaning more of them. Of my lasst 20 downloads, 8 were subscription.

i am beginning to wonder too, nemo1024.
if , for example, at a site where you can select the price, would a lower price be more productive then a higher price allowing subs.
in other words, don't give me 28 cents, buy the blooming image for a buck so i get 50 cents, at least !  ::)
what do you think?

Epix
Mathematically no  I was going by How many pics nemeo 102 had in his portfolio    but I am averaging .98cents a pic for the year with 765 pics I
did much worse when I was exclusive. I guess sub are a pain but that's the way DT wants it.

Hi,

I know it is a very old post. I am just wondering: is no change regarding the possibility of opting out the subscription program on DT? 'Cause I would like to upload more on Dreamstime, even exclusive, but without subscription. Some good news about it?

Thanks

I know of no good news about DT of late :)

But to answer your question, you can't opt out of subscriptions. I don't know any microstock site where you can (even those that at one time used to allow that, like Getty and iStock, no longer do).

And DT no longer offers higher subscription royalties for the higher levels of images (you used to get 70 cents for level 5 images). Combine that with an increasing proportion of subscription sales and I find DT earnings as well as RPD to be way down from a couple of years ago.

Thank you for your answer. The thing is that lately I get better royalty with them than anywhere else, except the images sold with subscription. And I have started thinking to give them more attention, but I would not like selling more on 31-33-35 Cents. Too bad it is not possible to opt out. Subscription ruined the microstock in my opinion. I have to reconsider the whole thing then :)
And yes, I would have liked to opt out this program also with shutterstock, but there I found quickly that is not possible.

Have a good day and thank you again  :)
