I'm just curious as to why the default search doesn't seem to update much, or ever??
I see a lot of images sitting in the same slots in the search for more than a year. Sometimes entire series that still are not selling after a year or more. I have an image that sitting in the #3 slot under "beach" search for about a year and a half now. I would love to replace it with any of 200 or more images that will certainly sell better. I don't understand the search at all? very confused. Anyone else baffled by the dreamstime relevant search?

Dreamstime relevancy is partly sorted by how often a similar keywords is in the title, description and keywords. So in this case you have 3 times beach. And maybe the collections which have beach in the title also play into it. I guess there are other factors as well, but it seems the amount of the same keyword is the strongest factor.
The relevancy search updates regulary. Search for isolated tree. There are 6 images which I have uploaded within the last three weeks on the first page ;D

Thanks, I didn't realize the title played into it. Gotta start paying attention..haha..
If you seach under "beach woman" there are entire series that have been sitting on the first page for than a year now. I'm just saying they could mix it up a little more like most sites. I'm not a big fan of seeing series posted on first page, mine or others. If I was a buyer, not sure I would like that to much. Just my opinion of course.

It seems most of the beach images of the first page are very strong sellers, probably that plays into it as well. For other images it then might be hard to push them out of the first page. But who knows, definately there are other factors as well.

That's true. I got couple pictures with this category but the best one hardly gets 20 views ;-) It seems like I am too late into this game :-)

I don't think sales play a big factor for relevant search on dreamstime. If this was true the search would look a lot different. Being a niche guy I follow pretty closely people that submit similar material to myself. In this case I'm not seeing it. Its got to be other factors like what you mentioned about title and how many times keywords appear etc.. That would also explain the grouping of images in a series..must be keywords only. Editors choice selections plays a factor also I'm guessing.
-
You might be right, but it seems there is something more which plays into it as well apart from the number of similar keywords which seems to be the strongest factor, but I can't really pinpoint it.

Agree :)

i wonder how important tight keywording is on dreamstime.
is it better to have 10 keywords and miss out on some usefull ones that someone 'might' search for... or is it better to cover all the bases and have 20 keywords??
in that linked thread achilles mentions that spam is penalized heavily. Does that mean lots of keywords is penalized heavily?

Well, if you look at the top results for most of the searches, all of the ones I looked at had at least 20 keywords, most had many more. He probably says that to discourage keyword spam.

I remember a short while ago when Fotolia was weighting placement on the amount of keywords. I did a little test with a couple of similar images the only difference was one was horizontal and other vertical. The vertical one had less than ten keywords and got excellent search positioning. Horizontal version had about 50 keywords and ok placement, not great. Months later the horizontal version with many keywords is winning 34-27 on Fotolia. A single test probably doesn't hold much water but I thought I would offer the info.

also, your talking about fotolia, and we are talking about dreamstime. Two totally different games.
