Title: 4k compressed video from aftereffects
Post by: Rage on December 05, 2016, 05:58
Have had a strange experience working with after effects with 4k files. When i export using quicktime and h264 i get a 2000X2000 file. I think this is a codec limitation. But then what other ways do i have of getting a 4k compressed file from after effects?

Btw magix editor pro outputs h264 .mp4 files perfectly.

QT sucks, that's why Adobe created Adobe Media Encoder. It sucks a little bit less. You can use that to export to h264 at 4k from After Effects.

Choose Export using Media Encoder, or just drag your After Effects comp into Media Encoder.

Let me give this a shot ... also will it allow me to put something in the render queue. I love how AE allows me to do my stuff while it renders the videos

You should look at your system settings.
Also, are you on a PC or MAC?

I have created 8K Quicktime files on a MAC and PC no problem.

I'm on a Pc, win, 10, i3 8gb ram. Can create 4k files using h264 with no problem. It's like AE is missing a codec for h264 and the quick time codec has this limit.

Also installed adobe media encoder to test . Wil give it a shot tomorrow

Hi izzikiorage,

With that setup you should see the H264 codec no problem. Are you sure you have QuickTime installed?
In After Effects select the 'Format: Quicktime' and then in Format options the H.264 codec.

Apple no longer supports QuickTime so get it while you can.
I have QuickTime 7.7.9 installed and I see the H.264 codec ok on a windows system similar to yours.

Don't try to put h264 in the .mov container, QT won't do this above a certain resolution. In Media Encoder, use the MP4 container to render to whatever resolution you need.

BTW, don't render interframe codecs like h264 directly from After Effects, the efficiency will be very low because it needs to evaluate multiple frames for encoding, and the After Effects render cue is not really made to do this.
That's why Adobe recommends using Media Encoder.

Now Media Encoder has it's own set of problems.. (might show up when doing 32bit/channel compositing for example)

So i guess the best way is to edit in aftereffects and then use the media encoder to render

I see h264 when i select quicktime. But the resolution is limited. Not sure how to change the container to .mp4. Plus i see people on the web have h264 listed in the main list (where quicktime is shown) they can render using mp4. How do i get that h264 to show? Do i reinstall the codec or something

To get the MP4, go to the presets in Media Encoder, select the Youtube preset for example, and tweak the settings to your likings.

What version of Media Encoder do you have? Normally you shouldn't have to install Media Encoder because Creative Cloud installer automatically installs it when installing After Effects.

Doesn't seem to work together well. I have to drag and drop my composition from AE to media encoder for it to work

Maybe you should reinstall After Effects from the Creative Cloud installer. Adobe Media Encoder should be installed automatically, and they should work together just fine.
Also, the AE forum from Adobe can be quite helpful with these types of issues.

Brilliant. Now trying to figure out what are the best setting for encoding to 4k. Using max depth and render and a target rate of 70. Can't find a VBR setting
