Once again ProDad (as Mercalli mentioned in previous thread) have a standalone app to do similar.

As a personal subjective note, simple masking and minor blurriness usually save the day.

Nevertheless impressive results and great new tool! :)

Same here, I used to do masking and blurriness as well, but this is another league

Can you edit normal 4K video in free version of DaVinci?
I remember it was limited to HD.

Thanks to all previous posts i finally decided to give it a try myself. Never used, never asked to deliver from Resolve. Let's see how it wil go....

Offtopic 1, browsing capabilities they also offer some free sfx from their library, guess a possible future coming stock provider? Or a current agency possible partner?

Offtopic 2, googling word foley (as free sfx mentioned above) my eyes dropped to Audio Blocks ad, "seriously, download as many as you need!" So here is a nasty offtopic comment: seriously, why as many as i need and not as many as i can? :P

Very interesting,
I thought the free version did not support 4k at all

A really short journey TBH.

Tested on current laptop that i do proxy editing for family, small projects and stock clips. Resolve crashed everytime importing a single 4K clip.

Perhaps in the future or whenever I manage to get a better laptop. I wanted to get familiar with Resolve as long as it goes popular and I still remember loosing a job in the past because I don't know Edius.

Except losing the free no paying version benefits i don't feel i lost much but it actually made me curious to research more on node based compositing, an area of knowledge i know nothing about.

:)

Interesting,
how much RAM do you have in your computer?

Just 8Gb, minus 2 of them that are shared with the GPU.

I don't want to sound negative, but 8Gb for video ediing is really low.
I have 32Gb on mine and I have been planning for a long time to expand to 64, I will do it as soon as I have the time

How has the amount of CPU memory impacted you? I only do editing of short clips on Resolve, but my machine has 16GB of CPU RAM and it renders at well over real time (HD). I do believe video processor/RAM is very important, but not so sure about CPU memory.

It's 'critical' apparently:

https://www.pugetsystems.com/recommended/Recommended-Systems-for-DaVinci-Resolve-187/Hardware-Recommendations

As for RAM, 16GB is recommended. 32GB is you're using Fusion... so 8GB is probably the minimum.

"CPU memory" is cache, which is not the same as what we mean when we talk about RAM. Not many machines have that much cache, so I assume you meant RAM (forgive me if I'm wrong)?

Anyway, 16GB of RAM is enough for 4k editing, but of course, more is always better. As for Resolve, yes, it can use the GPU as well as the CPU (something After Effects and Premiere are not so good at...) which makes it very beneficial to have a nice graphics card, but not a must. GPU memory is called VRAM and anything above 8GB is considered to be quite a lot! The best cards have 11-16GB and they cost as much as a nice computer.

Hard drive speed can also become important (although I find most USB 3.0 drives to be good enough) when dealing with 4k, but it's usually easy to just temporarily transfer the clips you're working on to the internal SSD if you need top speed.

---

More important is how the application is written... Resolve is quite fast with a good graphics card, but still much, much slower than Final Cut Pro X. On the other side of the spectrum is After Effects which is like a snail, and Premiere isn't exactly a speed monster either...

I have a hard time replacing what After Effects does with any other program though, so I guess I have to live with the lack of speed for certain things.

---

...and back on topic.

It's a cool feature, but I haven't found a use for it yet. Like all "magic" features it isn't really magic when it comes to video, and I find it often screws up, which means it takes just as long, or longer, to fix those mistakes than doing it manually from the start. In Photoshop it's perfect, however. In AE it also generates enormous files which can be a bit annoying...

It is a mixture, i5 laptop, two ssd drives and the shared memory It served well even for multicam HD editing with an external 24" screen but with horrible rendering times. GPU didn't gave me any lags just the orange screen whenever i applied too many or heavy effects so everythingwas ok in HD but 4K edit , even simple trimming is out of the question. Only by proxies and leaving it alone to render them.

@Brightontl. This is a low end laptop, and tbh i don't feel like upgrading it as long as wherever i work they have an editing station. For "family" clips one to two lines timeline is more than enough... My concern is more to get a 4K camcorder to actually have some chances with stock but again the family budget and expenses comes first! :)

You don't need a 4K camera to have a decent chance at stock... the majority of all sales are still HD. Always worth future-proofing though I guess.

That's very true, but 4k is also extremely useful for other things than a final 4k product for sale. Stabilizing, reframing, creative crops/zooms (without quality loss for HD delivery), photos from still frames, etc. etc. That is the true value of 4k capture. Just like photographing wildlife with 20mp is a lot more useful than 10mp because of cropping.

the majority of all sales are still HD. Always worth future-proofing though I guess.

True, but I sell more and more 4k it seems. Especially where the prices aren't outrageously different (2.5x HD price is not reasonable in my opinion) customers more often choose the 4k version.

That being said, I did sell some very nice high-priced 4k clips this week, also something you're missing out on if you don't upload 4k - the chance of high $$$ sales where you can't set your own prices.

exactly that!

As mentioned in other threads my dslr gear was damaged (after selling the loyal XA10) so now on I have to choose carefully for one piece of gear for family, personal projects and stock video ::) Unfortunatelly everything I like or suits my needs costs a lot for my budget and no sales do not justify an immediate purchase but my decision is that it will be a 4K camcorder.
(let me translate the "my desicion is" part meaning that my wife approved a future purchase (...eventually...))
:P
