Title: Choosing a mic for the Canon 5D mark II
Post by: leaf on February 17, 2009, 10:07
I have drooled over mic's once in a while, trying to plan a future purchase.  I just saw this write up from BH photo with a pretty good overview on the various mics available for the 5D mark II

I have to say that it will take some time to get used to see photographers with a microphone in place of the flash...

i haven't tried yet, but I am planning on it.  I know FOR SURE that they accept video from the 5D because at the UGCX that was a big thing they (Kelly and Bruce.. the guys who run the show at iStock) talked about.  Taking video, and doing it with a 5D Mark II

or perhaps I should qualify that statment.  It wasn't a big subject, but they hinted at it strongly several times in the obvious HINT HINT sort of way.

It's better to try the presented microphones.
I have the 24-105 IS lens and the IS makes a big background noise what is recorded onto the video. Now if you attach the microphone on the body, somehow it will be the same body so the IS noise can be heard through the body. Also because it's situated over the lens, some noise will come through the air.
My preference is a separate microphone (not attached mechanically to body)

I just thought I'd bring this thread up from the dead and ask the question again.  Any good mic suggestions?  Right now the best solution I've found looks to be the Rode VideoMic Pro (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/744768-REG/Rode_VIDEOMIC_PRO_VideoMic_Pro_Compact_Shotgun.html?BI=1878&KW=&KBID=2528)
