Title: MOV file questions
Post by: mtkang on October 17, 2013, 06:06
Hi all,

I use a pentax K-30 and i have a few MOV video files which aren't able to be imported to lightroom, but i can play it with quicktime.

Anyway, i am thinking maybe that few files have some problem so i tried to resave it into mov format using mpeg streamclip.

the original file is 17.01MB, resave another file as mov, and it is 263.85MB. Why the size becomes so big as they are same format?

What codec did you use? Is compression 100%? For 10s clip it's normal size.  If that's so try with 90-95%. The file will be much lighter and acceptable for stock.
Hope it helps.

I think this is OK - when you save in MPEGStreamclip, you are actually also choosing which codec to use with the file - like PhotoJpeg. Those codecs are far less aggressive in compression than the one that is used in the camera and so you are getting a much bigger file. My 15 second clips that I upload tend to be in the 300M range.

i used the apple motion picture codec i think, but i put the quality full, as i think it is just from mov to mov.. but it seems it is not this case?

I don't know why the original file from camera is 16MB but resave as another MOV make it 200MB?

MOV is just a file container - like the structure of the file. The content needs to be encoded with something, and your camera uses a modern very high compression codec. The Apple Motion codec is far less extreme, especially if you chose 100% quality.
