Yep, looks pretty nice. So it sounds like it's has a different or modified chip than what's in the D300. The movie thing is interesting. The new 50D seems like it falls somehwere in between the D90 and D300.

I never liked the idea of getting video camera features on a  photographic camera because they don't usually able to produce decent videos but Nikon's D90 seems a bit different.it looks quite impressive but I wonder how it will effect the shutter cycle and what storage capacity it has
I imagine if you shoot 1,280 x 720  videos you'd end up with huge files.
may be video feature is not as handy yet.

oh well as I said I am not a big  fun of  combo products.

Look like they used the D300 sensor

Chase Jarvis reviewed it here and had good things to say:

http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2008/08/chase-jarvis-raw-advance-testing-nikon.html (http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2008/08/chase-jarvis-raw-advance-testing-nikon.html)

He claims it has a great dynamic range.

I was also thinking - who would want video on their SLR?  But he mentions easy control of dof and you can use all your lenses... ah, it's making sense...  paparazzi will love it.

Not knowing anything about submitting video to the stock agencies, how would a camera like this measure up? Would the fps, video quality be good enough for video submissions to iStock and Shutter Stock? I'm a canon guy but after watching this little vid of Chase (who is one of my fav photogs) really makes me wonder if I'm in the right camp.

here is my guess:I expect it to  deliver good enough quality videos  to upload them as stock footage at 1,280 x 720 (you may even down size this to get SD footage as well)

but my main concern is what about shutter cycle?imagine shooting  720  frames(pictures) for a 30 second clip.and how on earth you cold store that (supposedly) huge HD video footages(unless they compress it so badly)

Video I didn't noticed. For the shutter, there's no way a shutter can cycle at 24 fps. Like in other video camera, the shutter will just release and the sensor will automatically be activated 24 times per second. At least it's this way I see how it will work

to my technical knowledge it is supposed to capture 24 frames per second like in move camera(not a video camera)as this camera  shoots progressive frames(meaning 24  full pictures,which is not like fields based interlaced video) I don't know if they can manage shooting 24 separate pictures per sec without closing the shutter.may be that's beyond may knowledge I don't know.

Well, maybe I have a part of the answer here. On the D300, there's the live view mode where you can view a video of your images for focusing correctly. It work by releasing the shutter and until you finish your composition, the shutter stay up and then close when finished.

I think it will be the same on the D90 but using a better resolution. But will see maybe I'm wrong :)

I am sure Nikon must have a valid answer to this but here is some info on how shutter works on a video camera
http://www.mediacollege.com/video/camera/shutter/

and here might be the answer LCD shutters:

sorry it has become a little off the topic.

I was waiting for upgrading to a higher mpx for nikon to introduce their D 90.  I'm currently using the D 200, my studio photographer parthner is using the new D 300, and frankly i am not impressed that much with the results.
IMO the D 200 produces less noise at lower iso than the D 300.  Kevin (collgeague) had a hard time figuring out the D 300 for noise free results.
The extra 2 mpx wasn't worth the upgrade.  Seeing the specs of the D 90 are almost identical to the D 300 i'm still not convinced if i should upgrade...
In my daily job i see a lot, and i mean a lot of pictures from different brands of cameras at full resolution.
- Knowing the stock market is shouting for bigger resolution files;
- Knowing bigger resolution files gives more income at certain sites;
- Knowing Canon is about to release their new D 50 (15 mpx);
- Knowing we have to wait at least another year for Nikon to release an at least 14 mpx camera;
- Having seen pictures taken with the Pentax K20D (14.6 mpx), excellent quality and at a much cheaper price point then the Canon and Nikon.....

Unless the D 90 image quality proves to be excellent, until i have seen a tourough review, until i've seen full resolution pictures from the D 90 i withhold my decision.  If the D 90 doesn't convince me enough I'm tempted to switch camera brand to Pentax.

Over the years i couldn't get rid of the idea Nikon and Canon just gave us crumbs, only minor mpx upgrades, while when we look at Pentax, they came from 6 mpx to 10 mpx to 14.6 mpx.  Considerable jumps imo.

Patrick - I have a D80 which has the same sensor as the D200. I also noticed my D300 has a different noise profile than the D80 at lower ISOs.

What's weird is that the D300 has had no technical rejections but I had minor artifacting rejections with the D80. The D80 seems to apply heavier noise reduction which induces artifacts. Also Adobe Camera Raw seems to process these cameras differently.

Will be interesting to see if they changed the sensor for the D90.

Canon really have their work cut out here for the 5D. The D90 blows the 50D away.

I will be keen to see what they offer us with the 5D replacement, considering Sony is also going to give them a shove with the A900.

At the moment hanging off from buying another L Canon lens in case I switch camps after 22 years.

Yeah, the high iso noise is well controlled but with probably lot of in camera noise reduction at 1600. I noticed that the 1600iso sample images have more noise but are sharper than what the photographic tests shows first. The results are quite the same as the D300. No surprise if the D90 sensor was the same as the D300 one. But I didn't saw anything who was saying this?

Neither am I, to be honest.  But that may be more of a reflection of my "old fartness" than of reality.  Time will tell - I have actually been wrong before.

I KNOW!  Shocking, isn't it?  Me, being wrong!!!  Right! ;D

I think I've change my mind and now thrilled with the video feature of  5dm2  especially as a stock footage uploader:)

I picked up a D90 last week. I'm coming from the D70s so the jump in quality is OUTSTANDING!  Indoor images are bright and lively where the D70s was dark and gloomy. The on-board flash doesn't cast the same lens shadow on the images (don't know how as it doesn't look to be any higher) and doesn't cast heavy shadows like the D70s. The LiveView works good though I can't see it being overly useful. The video is ok, but I've read there are some issues with focus when zooming and panning. Plus the audio isn't spectacular and there's no microphone socket.

Aside from the higher quality (and double the megapixels) the biggest help is the screen. On the D70s you could only zoom in to 200%.  On the D90 you can go right in to check find focus. And the screen is about 3 times the size.

I'm sure there'll be lots more benefits as I get to know the camera better, but so far, I'm loving it. I'm very much looking forward to getting my first XL sales in micro!

I know a few wedding shooters that have picked up this cam as a backup. Reason, so that they can pick up some video clips to use as fills in their photo slide shows. Sometimes all you need is just some quick fills of room ambiance, candles, flowers, dancing, etc, so will be a huge advantage there instead of having to goof with a separate cam for these video fills.
