I just read about the end of updates for Apple's Quicktime on PC leaving doors open to any new found holes the code may have.
On a German news web site they urge all PC users to uninstall Quicktime (since players like VLC can handle most files perfectly fine anyway) unless you definitely need it for video production.
If I understand correctly, an export of Photo-JPG or h.264 requires Quicktime installed on a PC right?
So what do you guys do? Apple did not comment on this question yet...

I use MPEG Streamclip to convert to Photo-JPG. It's free and easy.

I believe mpeg streamclip requires that quicktime is installed.
Also, why is this coming from trend micro and not from apple directly...seems odd. Why would apple stop supporting this now?

Leave it installed, and just don't run it, if you need the codecs. It says you actually have to load a malicious page that runs it for it to do anything.

Thanks for your input but I decided to remove it. I only used the Quicktime formats for stock footage clips and since I have not received one rejection for the ProRes versions of my clips I don't need Quicktime anymore.
Quicktime often gets installed together with iTunes and if Apple decides not to update Quicktime anymore knowing that there are holes in the code it will be a popular target for attacks whichever way they might be executed.
I understand that this may be just one of many programs on my computer which has vulnerabilities but since I don't need it anymore it's a no brainer.

For an alternative, QuickTime files work quite well with the VLC media player. :)

I'm curious how you output your files in ProRes if you're on Windows? Is there some software that converts it? And... if there is, surely you still need the Quicktime codecs for it to work?

Thanks for that. You learn something new every day! I'm assuming you'll still need to have the Quicktime codecs though? Although the security issue, from what I can tell, is with the Quicktime player itself, rather than the codecs. Not sure if you can install the codecs without the player, but seems like a decent work around if you can. Thanks!

No you don't. I've uninstalled Quicktime and rendered ProRes successfully afterwards.
