Title: Stolen camera - registry?

My Nikon D70 (serial number 4076355) with a Tamron 70-300 lense was stolen between Cape Town - Frankfurt - Norway yesterday. Is there any central registry for this type of thing? I have left a note of the theft at the most used Norwegian photo site, but since this probably happened in Africa or Germany there isn't much use in that.

prevention is always the answer to theft; we have to remember the world is full of sneaky fingers... whether at home or abroad, we have to keep a good hold on our possessions.

sorry to hear about your loss, but it's probably going somewhere in the black market  stripped as parts, like stolen cars. best to leave it behind with 2008 !
tough lesson to learn. best in 2009 !

I will put out an alert to my friend's camera club in Cape Town SA with the serial number for you. It's a long shot as far as being of any help, but worth a shot.

You can PM me with any more details that may be of help, such as transportation mode and carriers used, etc.

This is the closest thing I can find as far as a registry, and it does not look very active.

It would be great if the scum on EBay were required to provide a pic of ownership papers and a pic of the serial number plate when selling. But just dreaming here.

Thank you very much for the help Stormchaser!

I have no hope of getting it back, and the loss is not so terrible, since I have a travel insurance and double backup of all the pictures. It is mainly annoying. The replacement camera will be bought second hand, and I sure wouldn't like to buy someone elses stolen property. Strange that the insurance agencies haven't made a registry.
