Title: Beating a dead horse with Fotolia rejections...
Post by: JetCityImage on November 12, 2013, 09:09
What is your strategy for resubmitting pictures to Fotolia - Every other site took this pic, and F rejected for problems, focus, some crap.

Thanks for your help - Jonathan

Its the subject, fotolia dont care for those images. Sorry.

I submitted 55 images last weekend to see if people images would be accepted. I submitted 50 people images and 5 isolations.

I got 35 rejections, and they took 20 images; 5 isolations, 15 people images the rest was rejected for a laundry list of problems. All 55 images were accepted by Shutterstock.

The fun part is, they rejected complete series and accepted complete series (plus a few single shots of a red haired woman). So its obvious its subject related not technical or quality. The rejected images were 2 series, one of a chef preparing and cooking meatballs, all rejected, the other series of a man sitting and sleeping on a bench in the forest got rejected as well.

The series accepted was of a woman working in an allotment.

My prediction based on the quality and look of the images was that the chef in the kitchen and the man on the bench would be accepted and the woman in the allotment would be rejected.  :)

They pick the subject they need and reject everything else with the laundry list. Even if its good material.

My strategy is to submit small bathes up to 10 files - ALL FILES MUST BE DIFFERENT IS THE KEY - so far it works  for me!
The question is does it worth for 50$ per month with 6350 files there ???
Best

In the past, I had submitted a small amount of images to Fotolia to evaluate their submission process (clunky), time (average) and what they'd accept. I deemed them not worth my time (certainly compared to SS) and so had not submitted for 8 months. But, looking at the earnings poll, I thought I'd give them another chance. So, I selected my top 10 earning images that were all accepted by DT, BS, and DP -

All were rejected. Didn't bother me.
But what DID bother me was the REASONS for the rejections.

"We are sorry to inform you that your photo was not accepted because of ONE OF THE FOLLOWING issues:

Composition
The scene must....
Originality & Quality
The subject of your photo should be unique....
Background Quality
The background was not coherent with the subject matter, or lacked aesthetic quality.
Isolation quality
For isolated files, please verify the outline quality at 100% zoom. "

Whathe? ONE of the following issues? I may disagree with a rejection reason from other sites, but at least I know what it is! They might as well issue a rejection saying "Sorry. Your files has been rejected."

This is just plain bad business (NOT a good sign), because it gives the submitter NO way to evaluate what they need to change, so (if) they keep submitting images, they are predestined to fail. That makes it a waste of editors time going through all those images that will probably be rejected; and spending money on payroll to waste their time is not a good use of resources.

Oh yeah. And a waste of the artist's time as well.

If you don't want rejection on Fotolia you must make "Special Fotolia Photos"

After I have understood this I have very few rejections (and few sales too :D )

So, what is a "Specia Fotolia Photo"?
A "Special Fotolia Photo" is any shoot of a single object (not protected by copyright) that you can find around you, and then put on a white background, under a big soft box.

None of these images will be rejected
None of these images will be sold

The aim of Fotolia is not to sell your images, the aim of Fotolia is to be Fotolia.

They like what they like and don't like what they don't like, much the same as IS used to be and others, I'm sure, still are.
