Title: Extended licences on "Dollar club"
Post by: JPSDK on May 21, 2014, 11:36
Fotolia just sent me this:

Dear Contributor,

Did you know that Extended Licenses are now available on Dollar Photo Club?

This means that Contributors who opted in to Dollar Photo Club can now sell Extended Licenses to customers from untapped markets, all with a fixed commission of 30 Credits paid on your Fotolia account.

This new license was a popular request from our customers, so we expect a lot of Extended License sales on Dollar Photo Club.

If you wish to opt your images back in you can do that anytime by following this link.

Yours sincerely,

The Fotolia Team

So now  I dont get it. Fotolia is trying to compete with the subscription agencies with a dollar offer, of which I have opted out to not compete with myself at other places. But why do they add ELS to the mix? That will be expensive for the buyer.
What is going on?

Good improvement. They are still too cheap but stepping into the right direction ...

Hahahahahaha they did this to bait contributors to come back, PERIOD. And they ALWAYS use "we expect a lot of extended license sales" when it will surely be a trickle now and then, if that. Forget it. They've already shown who and what they are. Just look at their history.

It's always hard to tell what the volume of extended licenses will be, but even at SS, which has a decent number, the SOD/OD sales always beat out extended licenses each month (in $$ terms).

I think FT is trying to bait the hook with things that look nice but aren't all that relevant in the overall monthly earnings picture.

Thats a lot higher then an EL on FT. Are they replacing FT with DPC?

Extended Licences on Fotolia itself are very rare. I am probably right when I say that they will be even fewer at DPC, where buyers are more price sensitive. I don't think EL sales will account to much.

I think Mantis and Jo Ann are right. They are just trying to lure contributors back.

That's been a theory on msg. Why would they canibalize their own company? FT offers subs, od, el, etc. DPC offers two of the three, that's if you consider DPC sales a sub when they are in fact on demand sales

I went in front of  mirror, and asked the mirror: "dear mirror, am I an idiot?!"
..........- "no, ferdinand, you are not an idiot !!!" , said mirror to me...

.... this is how I stayed OPT OUT of dpc after this e mail

ELs on fotolia are very-very rare. That's why they are ready to give you this 'tempting' offer :) They know you'll almost never get one.

"...Dollar Photo Club can now sell Extended Licenses to customers from untapped markets..."

Strikes me as an uncanning 'untruthfulness'. Subscriptions for high volume users, who only need 10 images. Heck, even I buy more stock than that. They're openly attacking SS, and if they're planning to replace FT (which I think is highly unlinkely) they're still fishing in the same pool.

Mantis is gets my heart. Spot on.

My guess (driven by hope) is they're in a catch 22, here.

Wont work for me. In FT (which I have stopped uploading post DPC fiasco), my ELs are 20$. Assuming that I OPT IN, customers will have to pay 50$ for an EL (though an EL looks heavily improbable :) ) in DPC. If customers know that DPC images are a subset of FT images, they will compare the EL price in both FT and DPC and pick the lower one. In my case, FT and not DPC ... and I wont get the *chunky* 30 credits !

Forgive me for being dumb, but what is this "extended license"? What is it extended to? What do customers get without "extending" it? Seems to me that the EL is being presented as a magic formula to win people back with no substance to it.

Personally, I believe this shows the level of their desperation! They have been hurt bad by the opt-outs and need those photos back in the mix.

I won't move a single picture, I would if they were willing to make another SS, a proper SS with even higher royalties, the same or less won't make me happy

even if they make it better we never know what they will pull tomorrow
