Hello,

FT became officially our number one agency today, as for sales and earnings. In a full year went from 3rd place to first, letting SS and DT well behind. This result was the combined effect of our efforts and dedication with the obvious increase in royalties that one get at the Emerald ranking  ;)

One of these days we'd like to post some information and thoughts about our first two years of full commitment to microstock (oh, we are a married couple - both photographers - that's why I write in plural !  :) )  that we think could be useful to share.

regards,
Val

Congratulations!! :)
Somehow I was never doing really well with Fotolia. But for whatever reason half a year ago I got a foot inthe door and FT jumped to 3rd best earner. I can imagine that with emerald FT would be also my No. 1 earner. unfortunately I still need two years to go at the current sales rate..

Fotolia is in constant grow for me since this summer and it looks like it will beat IS this month and take a solid 3rd place (after SS and DT). My acceptance rate is really high there too atm.

Hello Freezingpictures,

Oh, so those penguins were yours!! I know them from DT...  ;)  I think you could cut back that time producing more images. Unfortunately with the current increase in the number of images and photographers (overall in microstock) there is need to produce mroe and mroe quality images. Variety is in my opinion a key point to broaden the chance to get more clients and see a jump is sales.

This is only our experience of course (but in just one year we went up almost 300% in FT, but also increased portfolio accordingly...)

Evidently you have a good potential (seeing your DT stats), so I don't think it should be difficult to reach sooner an upper rankings.

regards,
Val

Excellent collection, then I sorted by sales instead of random and it was even better.

Fotolia has been my number one since I started a couple of months ago. Very good download to portfolio size ratio so far. I wish the other sites were nearly as good for me as Fotolia.

eh eh,  that's true. sorting out by 'downloads' bring up always the 'better' side of every photographer!    ;)
But here is a thing: I've learned a lot looking back at my own and also some of 'famous' as Yuri or Andres very beginning images... is really instructive if you look at it with the 'educational' intent.
By the way, many thanks for compliments.

For me Fotolia is unfortunately on 5th place, far far behind SS, DT, IS, and about twice worse than 123RF. It is strange I know, but that's the way things are. FT was the first agency I join, but I earned there about 12 times less than on SS, 5 times less than on DT, 4 times less than on IS, and 2 times less than on 123RF.

Hi Goldenangel,

In fact, if you notice at one agency a good relationship portfolio/sales, it is worth to try to analyze more in depth it. Maybe you are deemed to be successful in that one agency!  ;)   One thing we have learned thus far: at beginning there is ALWAYS one agency that will fare better than all the others. Eventually they levels after some years, as your portfolio grow and became more 'refined'. If some 'important' differences remains still, is good to consider to concentrate your efforts more on that one. But only then.

Studying/analyzing one single agency, means to became accustomed with search engine, keywording system, acceptance policy and so on... it require time and efforts. It is good to start to do it with the one agency you feel is the best for you. That will make you learn a lot, guaranteed.

regards,
Val

Thank you Whitechild. Regarding your other post, I think you should analyze why there are those different results and if you don't came up with any satisfactory answer, then maybe that's just it... FT is less good for you!  sometimes life is simple...   :)
Just go with the other agencies and try harder there, eventually.

wow congratulations emerald rank is quite an achievement!I am yet to become a gold member...

FT has always been a good earner for me and it has been always in my top 3 list in fact they used to be no 1 for me too but IS took their place for sometime now.and  as far as I know they are one of the fastest growing  microstock sites in the industry. lately I am experiencing slight drop in sales, which I think  something related to search engine changes but still a good earner for me.

HI All,

I am digging Fotolia. They upload my pix. I like the way I can see the latest sales results so easy and compare them over the past month and they speak to me when I send them a message. Chad has been a big help. I see them doing well with the incentive plan they offer. Best of all my photos are selling really well there, considering most of them have only been up for a month.

Best,
AVAVA

Well, gold is the 'real' first milestone and after that, I assure you, is easier to get to emerald than you can imagine!

Curiously a lot of people would say exactly the opposite about FT. ;D

I don't like the way they show sales, except for the buyer details.  I wished they would show the total dlds each image has.

There are some communication problems there, some poorly answered emails and ignored forum threads (not to count the deleted threads or posts).

I am not a big fan of FT admin, but I can't complain much about the results.

Adelaide

saniphoto, congrats to you and your spouse. good news.
also for your very good idea...."just go with the other agencies ,... if FT is less good for you!"
i think that's really true, and also what you mentioned. stay faithful with one site and study their sales.
we all have different styles and not all sites are the same.
like many here complain how other sites appreciate their images while another simply crap on them .
so really, the best thing is to pick that one site which want your images, and which they find you sales growing , slowly but regularly. and keep them supplied with the new images.

as a newbie of 6 months, i discovered that recently. now i actually make one site my priority, simply because they are giving me 100% approval and getting me sales . ironically, it's that one site that many complain they don't like.
so once again, it proves your point saniphoto!

here's hoping one day i can post in this forum to say the same thing you just did, and say... Xxx became my nr.1 .

Yes hali, but.... maybe in few years half of reviewers on some agency will change, or maybe a policy of that agency will change, and we will realize that all our analyzes of the agency don't apply anymore. So, I am afraid if I stick to one, or few agencies I am at big risk that one day some other reviewers from the agency won't like my work and I will realize that I spent few years on analyzing something that isn't like that anymore.
So, I guess it's better to develop your own style than trying to match a style of some agency. Agencies could change their style in time matching the needs of their buyers. So, maybe one day, buyers on FT will start buying my images like crazy :D

Thank you saniphoto, yes, I'm beginning to learn the specifics of each site which is important to know. However, I agree with whitechild: the specifics, the reviewers, and the site policy can change at any time. That is why I'm not trying to rely on one site only, but rather taking my chance in a few of them. It is good for my experience, and, when added together, good for the total number of downloads as well. :)
