Title: Fotolia Payouts - Paypal Overhead Cost?
Post by: wds on September 29, 2015, 08:58
New to Fotolia. They only payout royalties via PayPal or Skrill. Looking into this, I discovered that Paypay will charge a 2.9% fee on monies transferred to my bank account. So if I have $100 in royalties, I will only see $97.10.  I am in the US.

  - Am I missing something here?
  - Is Skrill any different?

Thanks.

I use PayPal. When I withdraw money to my Visa card they charged me with 2.5 USD.

In my case, I would have the Paypal account attached to a bank account number, no credit cards involved not sure if that makes any difference. It just seems unfair in that Fotolia seems to be asking me to fund their payout system via this cost. Kind of hard to believe since SS and iStock don't do that...in fact they generate paper checks for free if you so desire. That is why I am hoping I am missing something here.

If I earn 100€ and request payout, I get 100€ on my paypal account. So, Fotolia doesn't charge anything, but paypal does, when I withdraw money to my credit card.

Well they kind of are charging something. By not having a system to generate checks or direct deposit, they are saving money on staff and putting the cost burden via Paypal fees on their contributors. A bit disappointing.

Does anyone know how Skrill compares?

If your PayPal account is linked to your bank account and you transfer the money to your bank account there is no fee.

Paypal is different for different companies. Sometimes the company covers the cost of the transfer fee, sometimes they don't. When a business makes a transfer to your PayPal account, sometimes they incur the 3.5% transaction fee, sometimes they use your money to cover the cost of the transactions.

Skrill is slightly different. There is no transaction fee when a company transfer you money. It's completely free. Skrill however charges a transaction fee on the user's end when you withdraw the money/ACH to your bank. It's a flat rate of $5.00.

I'm using both PayPal and Skrill. It depends on whether or not the company covers the transfer fee and how big is the transfer. If it's $100 and the company won't cover the transfer cost, use PayPal. If it's over $200 and the company won't cover the transfer cost, use Skrill. As the transfer amount goes higher, and the company won't cover the transfer fee, the obvious choice is Skrill.

Yes, that's how I get my payments too. No charge to me.

Paypal are a bunch of crooks, unfortunately there are not many alternatives, really they should be more regulated as 2.9% is an extortionate amount to pay.

The rate should be more around the .5%, personally I am not happy with funding their space program

PayPal's fees are ridiculous. I can understand credit card companies charging a high percentage, but there is no reason for PayPal to be that high. 6 months ago, a business transferred me $2000 and and PayPal took something like $70 as a fee because the business didn't cover it. It was an expensive lesson and I switched over to Skrill ($5.00 flat fee) for those type of transfers ever since.

As long as the business transferring the money covers the fee, I have no problem using PayPal. But if they don't cover it, watch out...you're about to get fleeced.

I pay a flat 2€ or $2.5 PayPal transaction fee, not %, when I withdraw to my credit card. Fees are different from country to country, see here: https://www.paypal.com/ro/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-withdrawal-fees-outside (https://www.paypal.com/ro/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-withdrawal-fees-outside)

If your PayPal account is linked to your bank account and you transfer the money to your bank account there is no fee.
Only US citizens can link their bank account and they don't pay any fees. Life is fair!

It depends on which country your bank is located in. You can select your country and currency here (https://www.paypal.com/ro/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-withdrawal-fees-outside) and check.

Paypal is different per country and per agency, its apples and pears to compare it. Just read the agency T&C and the paypal T&C for your country and you have all your answers.
