I noticed that the thumbnails (on contributors' portfolio page) do not bear anymore the Fotolia's watermark. They have the large side ~ 450px and are indexed by Google Images so they may be used by anyone without paying a penny :(

Is this a technical issue or a permanent decision from Fotolia?

See as exemple (also attached):

No watermarks on the buyers site either  >:( just downloaded one of my images through the old right click save method and got 359x240 53kb image.

Good enough to use on a blog page

They removed them a LONG time ago. Yup - good enough for a blog image.

If they see a decline in sales, they will add back the watermarks.

I've filed a complaint with Fotolia's Support and I strongly encourage you to do so, because our images are vulnarable to copyright infringment.

Fotolia removed the watermark on thumbnails?

I don't remember any watermark on the thumbnails.

And
Shutterstock has not
Adobe stock has not
Dreamstime has not
iStock/Getty has not (and their "thumbnails are twice bigger that the one of the other sites)
Envato has not
CanStock Photo has not
Depositphotos has not
Bigstock has not
123RF has not
Zoonar has not
GL Stock Images has not
Alamy has not
Mostphotos has not
etc.

So, where is the problem?

That could be an explanation for my miserable March. 5 downloads for the entire month less than one day's earnings before. That has never happened before, not even when I first started, years ago.
What a pity, FT was my favorite and number one agency.

Although it's a shame agencies are so reckless with our images when it comes to watermarking thumbnails, it's considered normal nowadays. FT are not the only one.

"I don't remember" means "I don't remember", nothing more.
I have not written that there was not, I have written that "I don't remember"
What word don't you understand in "I don't remember"?
How can be wrong somebody not remembering something?

Hi there,

The preview thumbnails contain no watermark because the resolution is not high enough for those images to be usable in full/definitive projects. Clients usually work with low res. copies of the file and purchase the high resolution copy when satisfied with the final result.

Kind Regards,

Wow, that's pretty ignorant. I can think of about 1,000 common uses for images that size. Every single blog for example.

I use images smaller than that for promoting other things I sell.

They don't have watermarks until you do a mouse-over. It's very easy to just do a screen grab of the previews without the watermarks.

I definitely agree with you. There are tons of websites that uses thumnails, for instance in rss feeds, in order to gain traffic and do not have a larger image in the main article!

Web Designers can EASILY use it for a banner (gif) too. Nothing we can do about it though.

If there is a watermark, designers can easily remove it with Photoshop if they want

This can be proven and designers may not argue anymore that it was an innocent infringment.

Yes, it is right.

But as on most of the sites (see my list above) there is no watermark on the thumbnails you will also have to prove from which site the image comes (Bonne chance ! )
I don't negate that it could be a problem, but it is not new and it is not only Fotolia.

I don't understand why your "attack" is so specific to Fotolia

In my case, all my images without watermark on Google Images come from Fotolia...

Because it's not like that on Shutterstock.
