I'm not sure the rank is really working. Mine now reads:

So it's one sold image more than the last figures, but it my overall rank dropped one point and my 7 day remained the same? Mathematically this can be right, but I used to observed more significant variations in the 7 days rank.

I read that the 7 day rank isn't working yet only the overall rank. So you could have dropped if someone else sold more than you.

On DT, you can easily get similar interesting info by searching for contributors...
18'000 contributors, 60% with less than 10 downloads (!), 20% with more than 100 downloads, 3% with more than 1000 downloads.
It seems clear that in microstock, only a small percentage of contributors take it seriously ;D

Total number of contributors: 17.585
Number of contributors with portfolios of more than 100: 2,784
Number of contributors with portfolios of more than 1000: 256
This could explain why there are so "few" contributors with some serious downloads :-)

On the opposite side, on IS, sodafish has only 360 photos but more than 120'000 downloads!

Rozmaryna the figures you quote for DT are reflected across all the agencies.
For instance StockXpert has 4,000 photographers but only 5% of those have portfolios of more than 1,000 pictures.
80% of the income from the microstock industry is earned by 20% of the photographers (or less).

Ron Chapple is a relative newcomer to "micro"stock. His first upload to StockXpert is March 4 of this year, so those numbers are pretty good if you ask me. Do you know when Sodafish joined IS? Just curious if s/he has been there for years. 120,000 downloads is pretty impressive also for only 360 online. Exclusive?

This is great info - with another 102 sales at current stats, I'd jump 1600 spots! That's a good area to be in - when you're moving up quickly. It must be hard once you get to 90th to get past 89th, 88th, etc. lol

Tom' s (sodafish's) stats can be a bit misleading. He is exclusive but has a great, high Google ranking site of his own that he sells his icons off. The purchaser is then directed to IStock more-or-less just to make the final payment. This combined with the sales he gets directly from IStock is what gives him such amazing results.

I have been deleted all my files from fotolia about 6 weeks ago, and my ranking was about 100 overal at that time.
just for fun i checked my fotolia account and im fall down overall to 125th place, but strange thing that my 7 days rank is 1825, without sold photos for more than 5 weeks

Well, I've improved my rank quite a bit. A few weeks ago, it was about 30.000, now I've sold 7 images and it's 22.332. :) (I only have 45 images in my portfolio).
If it's true that FT has about 80.000 contributors, there must be about 50.000 people out there having no sales at all.

Woo-hoo and it's taken me almost a year to get that high. FT absolutely ranks last for me... I've gotten 103 files accepted there and have earned LESS than my 24 files accepted at IS. That is embarrassing :-[
I do well at all the others (by my definition) but I'm rock bottom at FT, I would quit but I don't want to give up what I do have towards that first payout.
Is it the ranking system?? Does it just take time for your account to age before your images come up in a search?? That has nothing to do with acceptance issues but does it effect your view/downloads??

wow, you guys really keep a close eye to the day to day movements of your stocks.
maybe you should get into the real "stock market" where it's the best time to be buying now. you'll make money long term than selling photographs; as long as you're not too greedy, and smart enough not to be swayed by the volatility and cyclical corrections. ;)

well i don't check too often, but once a month at least. It is a fun thing to keep me motivated... just like the rankings, but that 'fun' motivator just turned a bit sour :(

I simply don't rely on it, and I guess it's now more related to port exposure than actually sales. The truth is that I just got used to expect everything from FL since the infamous v2. By now, they are the 4th lowest earner for me. I just keep feeding the beast.
(the only thing I love over there is the watermark :D

I'm about to see these numbers really climb so I thought I'd update.
Last month I went from a gallery of 650 to 1450 in 3 weeks just by pushing the stuff I'd let sit there for 6-8 months. So we'll see how high my ranking can climb on that now. In a little under a year I've sold 261 files there.

I really have no luck with fotolia. I haven't even gotten to my first pay out and I've been there for 2 years I think...maybe three...don't remember. I guess I don't have the right style. I do fairly good at Big Stock, Shutterstock, Dreamstime and Shutterstock...but not Fotolia. Alot of my popular selling files at the other ones Fotolia rejected so that may have something to do with it also...oh well.

C'mon guys - you're all doing exceptionally well for us noobs.
I have made 1 sale. Off a portfolio like 16 images!
Fotolia has the highest rejection rate for me - I can't seem to grow my portfolio, so chances are I won't make another sale any time soon.
I must really suck at this.
My port on SS is growing nicely, and I've made about 35 sales since I started (which was 3 weeks ago).
I know - different strokes for different folks, but come on!
Let me put it you this way to give context to my frustration:
CS: +/- 95% acceptance
CC: +/- 90% acceptance
StockXpert: +/- 55% acceptance
BigStock: 47% acceptance
SS: 55 images of 160 uploaded (not great, I know, but I'm getting there)
DT: 24 images of 100 uploaded (even worse)
And now... Drum roll....
FT: 16 images of 187 uploaded (ouch)
That's an acceptance rating of 8.6%
So... To sum up:
Good job guys - I think you're all legends :)

Not really. Why don't you put up a full-size rejected photo somewhere and ask for some input here? You can watermark it. It might help to hear some opinions of the legends. :P

last month i went as high as 6860 with 20 images, and got my first month of sales.
already made 20% of what i earned elsewhere last year. my first year with the others.
i am definitely looking forward to 2009 with FT. and of course, contributing more to FT
because they get results. big rejections but they sell what they accept.

I think the 90 - 10 rule works: 10 percent of the people earn 90 percent of the money. So it's easy to advance at the beggining and it gets harder later on. Especially if you stop adding content for a few months, like me :D

I was just wondering why my views went to twice the count in last few days (max weeks) and sales went to about one third of the previous numbers. While my portfolio is small (200 pics), both counts are so consistent form day to day that I don't think it is the usual fluke.

this is my 5th month with Fotolia. and this week i celebrated my first Extended License sale with one of most latest uploads. it literally doubled my earnings.
with approvals on most of my new and regular uploads .
my decision since feb 2009 is that each time i get a new sale, i increase my upload percentage to that site. for this reason Fotolia, i have more than tripled my portfolio from a tiny 22 images in february to close to 100 images.

I have had only two sales in May, one $1.6 and $0.3 and my rank hasn't changed in a month - it's stuck at ~7800. does that mean that all other people are having crappy sales last month. but, two bucks, come on...they gotta have had more than that

I think the submission and approval do affect our ranking. I have not been submitting too much these past couple of months, and I have lost my ranking, after having my best month a couple of months ago, which included my first Ext Lic.

It's not sales.. it's income....
Logical conclusion, more income per image.. higher ranking.
You will always rank higher even if you sell 15 a day compared to 20 for a golden member.

Wow I'm in the middle and I've never cashed out yet. What does that mean for the other 27,700 people behind me. Oh Oh, that's really bad.
When you get to 25300 write to me with your dollar total / credit total and lets compare notes on sales and dollars. I'd bet it's based on credits/money, not number of sales. Considering my collection reduction program (only 10 photos left there), you should catch and pass me in a month or two.

So this ranks ara showing our sales compared to the total contributors in FT right? so i´m the 1030 member in number of total sales in FT, is that right? or maybe some other parameter not the sales??

I was just looking today, I got 1000 sales so I guess I'm silver now? But weren't sub sales counting 3 to 1, the site now says "A Contributor can be ranked at 1 of 8 levels; the more images the Contributor sells, the higher their rank and share in sales is. The ranks are calculated using image sales from the 'classic' purchase system along with any images sold from Subscription (4 images sold from Subscription equal to one image download from the classic system)".??

No, it was 4:1 for subs from the beginning. (Well, after it was changed from subs not counting at all.) I'm also well over 1000 sales, but still pretty far from Silver. :(
Premium sub sales should count 1:1, considering the huge bonus for buyers. It's the least FT could do (but then, they always manage to do less than the least, don't they?). >:(

I have the total sales number and then i have the "pay per download" number of sales and the "sub" number of sales separated. Of course the total equals this two added, so one should have to do the math in order to calculate the "ranking sales number"

Just checked and my 7 days rank went down to 9940, although I had 4 sales on Nov 17. The ELs I get are just 6$ or 4 euro. I never understood FT really, and I have no time to find out. They're on my cancel list soon.
I just can't find out their payout request page. Probably it's hidden well. Anybody knows where to look?

Click on the horizontal bar near the top that says "My Credits". If you have enough credits to convert it ill offer the option to "convert these credits".
If you have an outstanding request pending then the option to convert is not available.

mine is overall 43,300 and 7 day 7,500 with 27 sold files, 817 files available; only on FT for 1.5 months. Guess you could say I am pretty near the bottom, it is a long long way from 43300 to Lisa or Elena; can you two throw me a lifeline, I feel like I am drowning.

My 7 day rank used to be around my overall rank or better. Then there was a pretty sudden change a couple of months ago, and now my 7 day rank is mostly over 100. This is sad, as earnings are obviously affected pretty dramatically.
Not sure of the reason for the sudden decline, but coming on top of falling downloads at iStock, coupled with dramatically rising local currency against the USD, the picture is a bit gloomy. Maybe it's because I've uploaded "only" 440 images to Fotolia in the last year? If so, I'd better get back to work... :)

I agree! Shutterstock has overtaken Fotolia as my #2 earning site. The way it's going, Fotolia might even fall below Dreamstime for me. Very sad. Sales and views of new images in particular seem to be well down. Thank goodness for improving sales on SS and DT! :)

Maybe it is the curse of the greedy stock agency? At this rate only SS will be left. Can I be alone in thinking that sales at SS are off the wall this month though? Staggering numbers coming in and well on course for another BME at SS. It just seems that that's where all the buyers are migrating to.

I have to say that lately I've been a little nervous because I too have notice a slight downward change. It's not a lot but just enough to get me worried. My overall rank went as low as 52 but in the last 2 months something has happened.
I also have noticed a lot more subs than ever before but I can't complain too much because all sites are still growing extremely well!

In June 2009, my overall rank was 503. They cut commissions and stopped me reaching the gold ranking level that I was getting close to. I lost enthusiasm to upload new stuff and now my rank is 657. My weekly rank is 2,510 and my earnings have crashed to around 30% of their peak. The gold ranking level that I should be on now looks a long way away. For 3 years I worked hard to increase my earnings but now I really couldn't care less. There's no incentive. It's cost me a lot of money but they have lost out as well. If the rewards were there, I would of carried on moving up the rankings, instead of going in to free fall. I wonder how much more money they would of made from me if they hadn't taken my incentive away?

Ugh...mine dropped again today and now I'm officially #800. :-[ Doesn't seem that long ago when I was just about to cross into the Top 300. Earnings are down about 55-60% and decreasing every month. It's so bad at Fotolia that BigStock has surpassed and replaced them as my steady #4 earner. I haven't uploaded to them in over a year and started pulling non-sellers last week.

Whats worrying me more then income, is the search, its an awful lot of irrelevant and mediocre material being flaunted on the opening pages of the search. Just hope theyre not going the same way as IS, on the search mechanism.

There's less revenue because they've slashed commissions and most sales are now cheap subs. If they don't do something to reverse this, I can't see me being with them in a few years, it just doesn't seem worth it. It will be a lot easier to leave now, if they cut commissions again or change the rankings.

I was until recently but with a small portfolio. For FT there are only disadvantages to exclusive members. They have to pay you a higher commission percentage, you can price your images at a higher rate from bronze up (makes the shots too expensive for buyers so they don't sell well) and you can opt out of subs which is where they make most money IMHO. If you opt out of subs, you'll get virtually no sales anyway because of the way their system is tilted. Ft was good until a couple of years ago for me but then they started to fiddle with commissions and the search. Since then only downhill with 50% loss from 2010-2011 and now it seems they've tinkered with the search again.........down by another 50% less than a couple of months ago. Not to be recommended.
Bit of a funny club! They seem to have their favourites in the 'newly added files' section. You notice the same names cropping up with amazing regularity..........same names that tend to adorn their 'meets/events'. If you can get into the 'new additions' section, it can be seriously good news.........hundreds of views and multiple downloads with the first few days; setting those files up for prime position in the search in future.

Ugh...mine dropped again today and now I'm officially #800. :-[ Doesn't seem that long ago when I was just about to cross into the Top 300. Earnings are down about 55-60% and decreasing every month. It's so bad at Fotolia that BigStock has surpassed and replaced them as my steady #4 earner. I haven't uploaded to them in over a year and started pulling non-sellers last week.
Skipped 801 and moved right on down to 802.

I'm new on FT and don't have much there, but it definitely sells a lot less than IS, SS, and even DP for me. But I think every site has a different type of buyers. FT is mostly European and German, so lots of white everywhere will work well I suppose.

My rank is stable or going better, only downloads and earnings decline ... take your own conclusion.
Rank overall between 300-400 still going higher, downloads and earnings decline between 10-20% each month, since 1,5 years.
If this trend continue i will be first with no earnings :-)

Hey, I lost 2 places in FT overall rank... and 2/3 in income meanwhile. But at the rating, here at MSG, FT is still at 3thd position! How's this possible? I never was there exclusive but i gave them a lot pictures exclusive, now i have to shovel all of them to the other agencys ... urgs ...

It really has me discouraged to the point that if I don't see significant improvement over the next couple of months I may give up on Fotolia altogether.
My experience is similar to yours, Lisa - my overall rank has slumped to 65, my weekly rank is also over 600. My earnings last month were down 60% on August, 2011, and 70% on August, 2010. I was led to believe that people who upload regularly would be better placed in the search. I've been uploading like crazy, but it doesn't seem to have any effect at all. The trend is still sharply down. I think that emerald+ contributors got the best of the search in 2010, but that FT has swung the pendulum far too much the other way since then. Of course they don't care so long as they're still making money.
FT earnings were only 7% of my total last month (down from a high of 28% a couple of years ago), so I'm also thinking of giving up on them if the downward trend continues.

Hi Lisa, I suppose that we 'old timers' (if we can call ourselves in that way! :-) saw the best of microstock era, the start of the golden rush. Now I admit my production is less creative than used to be, but also that is FT fault to have failed to keep my enthusiasm on the upside. Combined with the screwing around with contributors and the nasty policy of FT overall, it was probably destiny to finish in this way.
I see many photographers are moving to alternative solutions (macro, Alamy, own website) that is also a sign of the evolution of the stock photographer. Recognizing that is a very competitive environment and we must continue to adapt.
Microstock was/is in my opinion a training ground, a sort of 'school in stock photography'. Now that I have mastered some few things, I am moving forward one step. I suppose for many is the same. Once learned what needs in this business, you try to step up to another level. Especially if you want a more fair reward for your efforts and expenses.
Microstock now is very productive only if made at a very very low cost photography, as pointed out in that (now famous) interview by Christian Baigt.
Overall I consider stock photography the best choice I made and I wouldn't change that (stock photography is a lifestyle!) and I see a very positive future (and present) in it for me. So, after all, even if FT is a crap agency, stock will live long! ;)

Great posts Robyn and Wiseguy. It is extremely helpful to know this is a trend and not a situation isolated to my portfolio.
If I remember correctly, when Gostwyck made emerald recently he saw a sharp dropoff of sales at FT. To the point where he actually made less overall than he had when he was gold.
I would be interested to hear from other Emerald+ contributors to see how widespread the trend is. Also interested in knowing what, if anything, those of us who are most affected by this will be doing about it.

I'm emerald. Heres my graph since the it peaked in 2010. Speaks for itself. I am now making 1/5 of what I was then. It is a loss of over a 1000$ a month on my best months. My 7 day rank was at one time under 30 when I was lucky enough to not get affected by some changes that affected most people it is now over 800!! In the beginning as FT went down Dt went up and mostly covered the loss along with new sites I was uploading to but DT is recently starting to go the same way. Luckily I no longer rely on my stock photography earnings but have branched out.

Also Emerald, for the last 3 years, except of 3 months spiking up, my earnings have been the same. No massive drop here, although it could be a little bit better (realistically).

Until recently FT was performing well for me, given my still rather small portfolio. But then in April my status got updated to silver (thousand sales) and since then my sales dropped tremendously, they are now 50% of what the used to be before the "upgrade"!
If I remember correctly, someone stated that FT places photos of higher ranked contributors lower in searches - if that should really be the case, then I'd be happy to downgrade again...

A friend of mine never really got up off the ground with FT. While other agencies kept going up FT basically went down rather quick after his first 6 months of being there, despite uploading constantly.
Some contributors just fall under the radar there. He could barely find his images in the search while I barely found any issues with my images.

Very little in the short term, but in the long(er) term I have to decide whether it is worthwhile for me to continue with a site that can't manage to sell my images. Sounds like other high ranked contributors are weighing the same decision.

Yes you're right that it wouldn't make sense to keep uploading if sales dry up in this dramatic fashion.
I didn't express myself properly. I meant what could one do to be ranked equally in the search results?
You have a great portfolio which should sell much better, so since something is off, my question is, how could you make FT management actually look into the issue besides sending a message to support.
Support at FT has often resulted in no or a generic answer with no proper resolution so this might be even tougher to succeed at reporting this specific issue.
Also because several factors are taken into consideration for search result placement (for example, I assume, your rank, recent sales performance, recent or overall upload behavior (PD dropped me like a hot potato after I stopped uploading for a week or two!) and more.
However, long standing and successful contributors should have better search result placements to maintain appropriate incentives to keep uploading.
I admit it's not easy to find the "best" search result algorithm to include a nice mix of good imagery of professional (long standing) shooters but also providing room for excellent newbies to be recognized on the first few pages of search results.
Branching out is something inevitable. What goes up must come down at some point and the contributor community is growing at a very fast pace. Agencies don't have it any easier to maintain market shares nor do we contributors get the long end of the stick.
Maybe it's just a massive bug that will be eliminated once they do a new overhaul, who knows...

Click click, you make some excellent points. I don't think there really is any solution with respect to getting sites to change their search engines. They do what they want with them, and no amount of complaining or persuading seems to make a difference.
As for being some sort of bug, I doubt it. It has been going on over a year and I never heard of a bug lasting that long...

This search engine "bug" has been going on for much longer than a year... My buddy noticed issues more than 3 years ago.
My sales were ok so I didn't see much of a problem but parts of his portfolio simply didn't show up in the searches etc.
Needless to say that he couldn't get his portfolio off the ground so to speak, kind of an endless uphill battle. Gets tiring very quickly, I can see that.
But since you had better times it simply doesn't make sense to see such a drop like fotografer. My chart really averages as a horizontal line for the last 3 years and not indicating a decline. Bear in mind that I submit very few images per month (though regularly) so this just doesn't add up.

Similar here. Of my last 100 sales about 50% are from images uploaded in the last 12 months although those only represent about 12% of my port.
My sales have been dropping fairly steadily at FT for at least a couple of years although when I hit Emerald, a few months ago, there was a noticeable step-decline of about 20%. Despite the raised prices and increased commission my monthly income is now lower than before. I have no idea whether that decline was due to worse sort-order positioning or buyers avoiding higher priced images or maybe a bit of both.
My ranking position has been in decline too but I'd assume that must mean that others are simply doing better than me. Those same individuals must also have roughly the same ranking as me because, as I understand it, your ranking depends on total credits sold (rather than images). Sales of credits and images should correspond fairly closely for photographers although vector artists and illustrators probably do better on credits.

I've had a few like that in the last couple of months and like you I've been checking to see if they were on the front page or somewhere else. One had nearly 50 dls in a month. It sort of gives me hope for the site as new images can do so well. Just needs to be treated like SS used to be and constantly upload there.

My new images are selling well on FT too. In fact, most of my sales are of 2 credit images, so unlikely the drop is because of price sensitivity.
@Click Click - your graph is a fairly steady straight line over the past couple of years? Are you emerald on FT? If not, then it makes sense. If you are Emerald or above, then you are the first I've talked to who hasn't seen a steep decline at FT.

This is what it looks like to me too. Yesterday, I did a little experiment and searched FT 'business'.
Immediately 2 images on page one stuck out like a sore thumb......one picture of a model in an 'unbusinesslike' pose and another was a simple portrait of a teenage girl. Both did have 'business' in their keywords. They also had 'model' in their keywords, so I searched 'model' and guess what...they both appeared on the first page of 'model' (out of 1 million images!). Both by separate contributors (I think one was emerald and the other gold), recently uploaded and few sales.
Often you can spot a very recently approved but 'incongruous' image. look at the keywords and type them in general search......the same images turn up in the first pages of every search. They're very recent and have few downloads but still in the first few pages of almost every search.
How the decision is made to 'push' certain images, I have no idea. Whether it's a random choice by algorithm or that somewhere a human finger on a key is in play, I know not. But it's a little like Dirty Harry with his, "Well do ya feel lucky today, well do ya punk?"......or words to that effect!

I wonder at what point it will be decided that my new images that are doing so well need pushing right down in the search as they are now no longer new images. I'd like to think that while they are doing well they will be kept at the top of the searches but if that was the case then my old best sellers should still be selling.

I'm shocked to hear that you suffered such a big hit. That's more than an 80% decrease. I wouldn't hesitate stop supporting them at that point I fully understand.
There must be some tinkering with the search results going on...

That makes sense and I guess that is what must have happened to some of my images then. I have never clicked on 'New images' before as I thought that it would just be a link to all the new images not a few selected ones.

Yep. 'Best sellers' of the day is just silly. Whether they're hand picked or the result of some algorithm, it makes little difference........it does not reflect the best seller of the day, I too have had an image sell 5 or 6 times in one day, only to find various 'best sellers of the day' have only sold once or twice in a lifetime!
What bugs me most about FT is that suddenly my bests ellers just stopped selling. No tail-off to zero just a cliff face from hero to zero within a week or so. Although I was exclusive at the time and had kept my best seller at 1 credit even as 'silver', it didn't make a bit of difference. As I considered my then bestseller to still have potential, I went independent to SS and that same image has sold 20 times in the 2 months I've been there and is on P1 or P2 of the SS search.
With 10% of my FT portfolio on SS, I've earned more on SS in the past month than on FT (OK we're not talking big bucks but nevertheless.........). Priority is now to upload to SS as much as possible.

Searched 'bread' and got 26 shots on the first page all from the same contributor, just uploaded and all (except one) with zero views and one download ( the exception had one view and one dl)! Went to page two and there's another 3 there (at the top of P2) from the same contributor.
Looks to me like, get a mate to buy a sub and start downloading everything that the guy/gal submits!
A bit daft really cos the shots will probably never be bought by real buyers.......funny desaturated colour to all!

I strongly hope that the agency (FT in this case) has some fraud prevention (or better policy violation) system in place to weed out this rank-gamblers. It should be pretty easy to fish those out.

FT tend allways to be worst for customers and constributors. They start (by accident) very good, until then they start any possible action to avoid this success. They work on their ruin until now since 3-4 years ... i expect next time they would insert a charge for uploading at distributors and a charge for costumers for getting the ability to view the portfolio. If this wouldn't help to crush the company in 2012-13 the plan B is that any distributor have to spend his images for free and customers pay the double and more for Image rights and get a constribution receipt for that.
So FT will get, as first, the Tom Sawyer Price for the biggest company with the most stupid employees all over the world.

^^^So how are they still 3rd in the earnings poll here then? It seems they're still popular with buyers and they must be doing well with contributors that don't like to brag about it. They've crushed my earnings and I'd love to see buyers moving to other sites that haven't hidden my portfolio but unfortunately it looks like that isn't happening. Buyers seem to be very loyal to sites, istock have succeeded in losing lots but they've had to work very hard at it and it looks like many have gone to Thinkstock, also owned by Getty.

The more I try out their search the more convinced I become that there is a 'club'. It's quite a big club, I am definitely not in it and I haven't a clue about how one gets in it. The algorithm or whatever seems programmed to promote certain contributors who are from very diverse levels and pricing but their images keep cropping up time and time again on the first pages of default search. Had another one yesterday where the last 10 or so shots on page 1 were a series, all by the same contributor, none had been downloaded and most had not even been viewed but they were on page 1 (that series was also not relevant to my search topic either and it continued on page 2).
When half of the first page is taken up by images from one contributor and you've waded through the gratuitously inserted 'infinity collection' images (in which I wouldn't be interested anyway because I came to FT for microstock pricing), then there's not a lot of space left for anyone else's images.
Unlike SS, for which I find the search quite good, FT takes no account of the title (description) of the image in its search placement. For those in the 'club' it takes almost every keyword and inserts that contributor's image(s) at every search opportunity on the first pages. And some images have longevity despite their lack of sales, they still appear high in search after even 2-3 weeks.

I wouldn't rule out that theory but am struggling to see how FT would benefit. It might be an impact of the sorting of keywords by relevance on submission - some might, some might not and some may do it better than others but impossible to compare because they are just displayed in alphabetic order.

Tested that too a while back. FT says, place the 6 most important keywords first and one contributor's image that came up repeatedly in the first 2 pages did that with 15 of their keywords (out of around 20) when a single keyword from that images' keywords was entered into default search. It's almost as if the search algorithm gets stuck at a certain point and just goes round in circles on a small number of contributors/images.
I can't say that I would know how to construct an algorithm that is relatively fair to both established sellers whilst introducing new work on the early pages but to show more than half of the images on the first page (that are new and often without downloads) from a single contributor, I find unfair both to contributors as well as buyers.

Is there a way to see how other people have sorted their keywords - I looked a some images as a result of your post and thay seem just straight alphabetic? You could easily be right though, maybe there is a logic flaw in the algorithm that causes the search to loop and that might account for what your seeing.

Just had an 'out of mind' experience with FT search. Searched 'bread' and got 26 shots on the first page all from the same contributor, just uploaded and all (except one) with zero views and one download ( the exception had one view and one dl)! Went to page two and there's another 3 there (at the top of P2) from the same contributor.
Looks to me like, get a mate to buy a sub and start downloading everything that the guy/gal submits!
A bit daft really cos the shots will probably never be bought by real buyers.......funny desaturated colour to all!
Good spot. Such tactics have been tried before (strangely, also by East Europeans) and resulted in the account being promptly suspended on IS. Relatively new contributor (or 'account' anyway) who is unlikely to survive for too much longer.

It gets even weirder. I log into my contributor account at FT UK, enter 'bread' in search and I still get almost half a first page of THAT contributor's images. Now, a couple have views and more sales.....the power of promotion eh!!
If I then log out of FT UK, go to private browsing with Firefox and use Yahoo search to bring up Fotolia, I go to FT.com (US site) and the search 'bread' comes up with a completely different first page which has good variation of images (lot of hamburgers!) both old and new, with not a single sighting of FTUK-Algofave.
Staying in private browsing, I go to the UK site again and the same first page comes up as I had when logged into my account.
It's almost as if the en.FT site has a bug/corrupted algo but FT.com doesn't.
Of course, this does mean that for folks in the US logging into FT there, they must think I'm a total loony and that I'm seeing things that are a figment of my imagination. :)

I'm a new entrant to SS and I tried to get as much info about submitting before I took the 'plunge'.
Perhaps I did see the submitter guidelines from 2009 in which it is stated that titles are NOT searchable:
