I often look at Fotolia's best selling images of the day/week to see sales trends, and came upon these two images: https://us.fotolia.com/p/206441223

Both were listed as "best sellers of the day" yesterday, and now they're included in the "best sellers of the week" list.  They seem to be the only two images in this photographer's portfolio, so he/she is off to a good start.

I am totally baffled by these images; I don't understand them as stock photographs.  I'd like to hear your comments on why they seem to have such a high sales appeal.  The only theme I can come up with would be something along the lines of "urban decay," but again I would think that wouldn't have significant commercial value on a microstock site.

Please know that I am NOT being critical of the photographer; I am NOT stating that these are bad images or that the author is a bad photographer.  Quite the opposite actually; I have to congratulate anyone whose only two photos have made it to the "best sellers of the day/week" lists.

I'm looking forward to hearing your comments and insights; hopefully I'll learn something new.

It has to be a mistake. There's no other explanation.

Where do I find best seller of the day or week? This looks like a mistake or somebody who hacked the system. Neither photo should have been best anything. Maybe should not have passed inspection. Can't be right.

I also don't even know how to view the best sellers. I agree there's probably a mistake here.

Absolutely. But it is a bit strange that images that most of us think are pretty bad, are top sellers. Maybe a bunch of people are writing books on how not to take photos, and they needed some suitable imagery to stick inside.

Possibly...if I could see in the minds of buyers I would be much richer!

Have had an image among "bestsellers" for the day more than a few times. Apparently, 2 sales in one day makes an image a "bestseller".  No need to go nuts thinking it means anything.

I think my "record" is same image sold 3 times in a day. It wasn't shown on best sellers....

In the good old days when you could see how many sales an image had on Fotolia, best sellers of the day often only had one or two sales in total (since approval). IMO completely fictitious or randomly generated file number.....sort of like the lottery.  ;D

some are very simple images. Let's keep this in mind. We provide material for designers. Simple is good.

And it's all the rage for celebrity chefs to keep things simple these days... simple, natural ingredients, cooked well. But if the ingredients are off and you burn them, simple doesn't automatically mean 'good'.

A simple image of a rock can be a well lit, well framed and well shot image of an interesting rock. Or it can be something very different. Like the first test shot you took with your first DSLR while out in your back yard.
