Title: How to opt out of Dollar Photo Club
Post by: Shelma1 on May 15, 2014, 11:40
This tends to get buried in the longer threads. Let's keep the momentum going and continuing the opt-out!

Go to your Contributor page.
Under My Account, select My Profile (https://us.fotolia.com/Member/Modify).
Select Contributor Parameters (https://us.fotolia.com/Member/Modify/Contributor).
Find Sell my files on DPC and click Modify.

And, from another contributor: "Then check that where you ticked actually says, "do not share on DPC". It's one of those sneaky buttons that if you press it again it will revert to share." after clicking Modify you need to "Save parameters" at the bottom of the page. Otherwise the changes will not stick.

If you don't mind one addition, I'd like to have a summary post of the various links that explain what's going on here for anyone who hasn't been following the story all along.

Announcement in January 2014 of Fotolia's new project, the Dollar Photo Club, an article in March "The Next Step in Simple", and a follow up post in April on how DPC was expanding because of great success:

After a little bit of increase the number of pictures on DPC decreased again :). Which is good, more and more people hear about the possibility of opting out.
Everyone learning about it should inform all contributors he can reach too. There's still plenty of them without a clue about DPS's existence.

Opt-outs are still coming..
And this should be up front, as the option is still pretty hidden, and Fotolia is still silent about it.

I know it's not a nice thing to just bump up threads in forums but i believe this one is pretty important to be visible up front.

We have to show that we don't want Fotolia to do this with our images. There are plenty of agencies being succesful at selling our images at higher prices. Even Fotolia itself, there are alway credit sales for L-XL-XXL sizes, I don't think any contributor wants to undercut those.
Having files on DPC is not the interest of contributors.

I just got an email today from a friendly member here letting me know about this DPC on fotolia. I'm in shock! THANK YOU for letting me know!!!! I have opted out.

Be sure to inform every contributor you can possibly reach.
As you can see it's hard to reach many of them, we are doing it for more than 3 weeks now.
Now DPC has almost 7million less images than Fotolia, but still plenty of contributors don't even have a clue about their images being sold there.

Bumpy-doodle-do. Based on a response on the Symbio forum, it seems there are still people who are unaware of DPC.

I've got a rather small port, so it probably won't change anything. But it feels good. Just opted out...

We have to keep pushing. FT and Oleg and mat and Chad, etc...all the FT gang are merely waiting for this thread and the momentum to die, at which time they will slowly (or rapidly) re-inflate their DPC collection.

Bumping just in case there are new readers who submit to Fotolia.

Hey, you never know. ;)

The thing that i don't understand about some major image factories (with up to 500,000 images) at all the big agencies, is that they stay opted into DPC. For an ODD at SS they get paid ~$3.00 whereas at DPC that same image only brings around 10% of that. Surely, at some point, once buyers see how cheaply they can buy the same image at DPC, they would flock there and the income of the factories would decrease substantially. Lets be fair, without paid DL's at FT and ODD' and SOD's at SS, this game would no longer be worth playing. So, why do the big factories stay at DPC?

I can only assume that buyers are ignorant of the fact that the credit purchase for $10/image they pay at SS can become a $1 purchase at DPC when the same image is offered on both sites. But I really don't understand it at all.

You don't think the big guys get a better deal?

If DPC gets a dollar (less expenses) for every dowload, factories can have a better deal, but not much better.

(Added after thinking a little bit): Except if what tehy offer them is a better place in search results, of course.

Even if they got say 75cents per DPC sale, every ODD on SS not sold as a result of the DPC sale would still cost them 2 bucks. I can't imagine that they're getting 3X as many sales at DPC to compensate for the loss of ODD's income at SS. Haven't calculated my ODD's percentage exactly at SS but I think it comes to around 50% of monthly payments and I would hate to lose it. Maybe the image factories don't have that ratio of subs:ODD's or maybe they just don't care but I can't see them making it up on volume of subs.
Anyway,as long as the major factories are all opted into DPC, I don't see the number of images on DPC vs FT decreasing much more than it now is. Most of the small and medium sized producers that keep a finger on the pulse (us here), are already opted out.

I have noticed sub sales from SS are dropping significantly in recent months. Is that related to the DPC on FT? :(

Well my SS sales are still increasing so I'd say no :)

Fotolia sales are still in the doldrums though

I see from ads on Facebook that DPC is offering the first month free now. I'm assuming that's because they're getting desperate. ;)

I'd agree with that.  They are trying to get buyers hooked because, in my opinion, not enough buyers are not responding to cheap seat pricing for front row behind the catcher images. The cheap pricing has a cost.  The revenue generated by one buyer is typically eroded when you fight by cost, so you need more buyers than a healthy pricing model might require. They may need twice as many buyers just to make the revenue forecast they want. I hope they choke on their own greed and die a quick death.

I have one question for the people who opted-in to DPC: are your files locked into DPC for some period of time or you can instantly deactivate them and activate if you want?

What a surprise.  None of the people you ripped into for opting in to DPC are rushing to answer your questions? Who could have predicted that?  :o

I'd like to keep this thread about how to opt out.  ;)
