Title: I'm going Exclusive!
Post by: phildate on December 07, 2006, 12:21
Haha, I thought that would raise some eyebrows! Actually it's true, I've just uploaded five images to Fotolia and they are going to be exclusive there. I have set the max prices for sales and $1000 for exclusive buyout so we will have to see how the sales go.

I have had an amazingly busy November, with not much time to shoot or think about stock so apologies for the absence on the forum. Thanks to everyone who continues to compliment me in other threads!!

well you did raise my eyebrow :)

can you set the prices higher if the images are exclusive to fotolia?

it will be interesting to see how they sell.

How did you choose the 5 photos?
Are they part of a larger series which will go to all sites?  Are they all similar or a variety?
Is 5 photos a big enough sample (especially for buy out) to determine if it is worthwhile?
What brought this on?

Whereas normally you have to set the price between $1 and $1 (so no option) as an exclusive image, I can set the price to be $1 - $15 for M and thus the prices for L and XL are a multiple of that. I have set to $15 so commissions will be much on par to an EL. If I get a sale that is.

I had some nice shots taken in Sydney recently which I thought were too nice to go for $1. Thought I would see how they go as exclusive images on FT.

Little off this topic. Phil, I remember that you once said (few months ago) that iStock was your best earner. Did you ever consider going exclusive with iStock? I know that you are not happy with them right now because of the lowered upload limit but if you would go exclusive you could upload all you want.
Also, is the Getty offer appealing to you at all?

IS has always been my best earner but it wasn't last month and it's not going to be this month. I have always had the utmost respect for IS but after what has happened over the last few weeks, I have lost much of that respect. I am spending far too much time trying to DA a portfolio of over 2600 images but I'm still not really sure on what constitutes a phrase and what I should be using. The way in which it way implemented was not properly thought through at all and the repercusions are immense.

For me Fotolia is my favourite and highest earning site now and the Extended License sales there are a huge factor in not going exclusive at IS. As an exclusive member at IS, I would not earn as much as I do now, nowhere near. And things are too unstable there.

As for Getty, it's a whole different ball-game. Yes it's got a great reputation but being exclusive at IS is not the only way in to Getty or the RM game. I have recently done some RM work for a publishing company, some of which might end up on Getty/Corbis anyway.

So for now, I am happy being 99.9% non-exclusive

I have two illustrations exclusive at DT, because they were only selling there anyway, and they were selling well.  I'm curious to see how the deal with FT goes, because regular sales there are good, but I haven't had any EL sales there lately, and also the higher prices may be a problem in a microstock site.

Regards,
Adelaide

I have been on most sites about 3-4 months, had 5-6 EL sales in SS, 1 in IS, none at FT with only $10 credit, but last month I changed all FT to 50 credit for an EL, and today I got my first EL at FT at 50 credit, a pleasant surprise ( because I was thinking to readjust to the 10-20 credits in order to get some sales )

I donīt know why, but for me fotolia had always been the top earner, particularly because of the EL sales.  I used to do well with istock as well, but there entire philosophy and orientation changed recently.  Same bs as the SS.  I am not very happy with the IS anymore but still submit there.  Lately, I have been submiting my best images as exclusives on FT.  The worst one for me had been DT, donīt know why.   Anyway, let us know how FT sales will go.

i find it very interesting how people best sites vary quite a lot within the top 5.

This month dreamstime is shaping out to be my best seller, followed by shutterstock, then fotolia.
