I think I know why some images cant be find by search engine.
Problem are multi word keywords. If you have at least one multi-word keyword in your image, almost all other keywords are scredwed up, and cant be found. Why? Because serach engine stuck on first eror in keyword list for that particualr image, and search no more.
for example if you have an image with those keywords:
"red apple" fruit, food, healty, vitamins....
the chance is that almost no keyword would be found. But if there are no multi word kws, they would be probably all found (and not only first 7, but all).
Correct me if I'm wrong with your example.

Keywords with quotes don't show up in the keywords list, so how would you know if that was the case?
I have the following image:

It has multi-word keywords in quotes. For example, it has "United States" (including the quotes) in the keywords. I can see these keywords when I click on "View Info", but I can't see these keywords when I click on "Edit Data". So there is no way to know what position these keywords occupy. So how could I test your theory?

I think the problem is that nobody know how the search work. OR it work whit the ranking and then when your ranking is too high, you can start thinking about closing your account. However thanks Chode for sharing your tought, maybe someday we will understand why there's people where it work and many more who don't

no, no, you missunderstood me. Forget about quotes. I wrote them only to point out multi words. I didnt talk about quotes.
I say: If you have in your keyword list a multiword keyword, or word with symbols such as _- the rest of keywords wont work.
Prove me wrong. Post an image link to fotolia that search cant find? I think my theory is right. And has nothing to do with ranking.
ps.
post a link to FT image, not a thumbnail, so we can see the kws.

This image has plain keywords. In other words, there are no complex keywords, quotes, symbols, or anything else.

No one can be found whit "traffic light" at singular and I will show you an impressive list if I have the time... You also can look all my traffic lights images in my port.
No one show under traffic light and only one under traffic lights. All have double words but then why the traffic set is showing.
I will now continu to check the ones whitout double words...

But are the keywords you used for the search in the first 7? Have they always been in the first 7? Because if you resorted them afterwards, it doesn't work.

I have several multi-word keywords images. I'll run some tests later. They sell however, so somehow the search engine finds them (not through the multi-word keywords, of course).

There's no double words included in the keywords...
But it does show up if you search for background diet grain, or grain bowl, but not morning health organic or background healthy morning

Most of Fotolia's sales are made in Europe. To be able to determine the efficiency or otherwise of searches, one should be searching where the customers buy - and that means Fotolia France, Fotolia Germany etc. And the searches need to be carried out in local languages, not English.

I'm french, do I must keyword in french for FT. However the Fotolia search engine is not working properly anyway and since V2 my sales are very slow. Even if probably the half of my port can't be found, I heard that many people have try to contact FT about many bugs and nothing have change. So I don't hope anything more from them

I looked for stock market graph. Lots of mine appear in the first page, most of which having "stock market", composed, in the first place.
This one (http://us.fotolia.com/id/822785), for instance, you pass the mouse over the keywords you will see the composed keyword.

For the French, you should also have the word 'bourse', also used extensively in US and UK markets when talking about European financial markets.

Then I don't understand? Do I sell my pictures through the world or only for the english countries?

You sell them everywhere. You upload to one FT site and they work the translations internally (for what I read, they don't actually translate keywords to the other languages, but when you do a search the search tool look for translations).
I have the word bourse in those images, at least in some of them for sure, but not among the first seven.
But my post was meant to reply Chode, as in this case I have images with composed keywords and the search tool works with these images (although the composed keywords are ignored).
