Title: Rejected "did not meet our desired level of aesthetic quality"
Post by: bobkeenan on July 25, 2012, 21:33
I have about 820 images on Fotolia.   They are not big earners and my acceptance rate is fairly low (35%).... but I just submitted 13 images and they only took one.   Each failed image had the statement "did not meet our desired level of aesthetic quality".  What is weird is that the images spanned about 10 different shoots with differing subject.    I think I got a tired ticked off reviewer.

I don't think much will be learned from seeing the images - I virtually never have rejections from FT and had 2 of a batch with this reason last month (the first in 9 months) - the rejected images are on SS, DT and 123 and better than many that FT accepted in the intervening period.

'Aesthetic quality' rejections at FT generally mean, "I couldn't fault the image on any objective criteria so, subjectively I don't like it/don't think it will sell". Not a lot can be done about that, move on.

Exactly.  I have learned that FT, like SS, doesn't generally care for dark, moody, images.  They want colorful images that POP.  This is a general observation and is not to say that I haven't had dark moody images accepted, but them again even a broken clock is right twice a day.

FT definitely likes them ETTR, not much shadow but SS is more forgiving about that.
They (FT,SS) sure want them to POP which makes it hard to send the same images to IS.
You have to find a balance to keep them al happy.

FT takes about 90% of my work and more importantly sell those new images, which should conclude the work is commercial valuable so to me it looks like these reviewers know what they are doing ;)

Sorry to hear it's the opposite for some.

After my first year in microstock with FT (exclusively) I must have gotten the feeling for what they liked and disliked. My acceptance rate jumped to 80 or 90%. Occasionally I submit one or two that are not colourful and punchy to test the waters (or whatever) and to my amazement they often get accepted...............but then don't sell. ;D
