Title: Should I raise my EL prices?
Post by: marcopolo on March 06, 2007, 23:16
I currently have my extended licences priced at $45.00. I am thinking this may be too low, I am currently getting 2-3 EL's per week at Fotolia. I am afraid if I raise prices these will go away, has anyone else raised their EL prices over $50? Have sales been affected negatively doing that?

Why not raise them for a month and see the difference?

Also if I were getting 2-3 El's per month per week from one site alone, at $45 a time, I wouldn't be wasting my time here, I would be out picking some new lenses!  ;)

Way to go Marcopolo  :)

I'm sure a lot of people leave the EL at the default price. Congrats on your success, I don't get any EL's at Fotolia

Id there a way to change the EL price for all photos at fotolia?  It would take me a long time to do them all individualy.

From FT website

"Currently only customer service can do a global change on your prices. However, this feature is coming."

Thanks for that.  Interesting that feature has been coming since May last year.  I will email customer services, as I doubt the change will be implemented soon.

I currently have my extended licences priced at $45.00.
Why did you choose $45 rather than $50 (I assume you changed the prices once you made bronze.
I understand PhilDate has some of his set at $100 and gets sales.

I changed all mine to $50 last Nov, and since then I got two ESL, so not too bad, I did not get any prior that any way, ( 5 months )

I just decided to keep it $5 under the maximum. Perhaps it is kinda silly but it is the same idea as charging $99.99 for something instead of $100. It is interesting that Phildate get sales at $100, he is also one of the top photographers on mictostock, so I imagine he can get away with it. It has taken me a year and a half of spending all my spare time doing this and nearly 2000 files on the site to get even this far, and I don't know if it is a fluke that I have been getting more EL sales in the past month or so, but I hope it continues.

I got some new lenses this time last year, I think I need to upgrade my camera next before I get any more lenses :D.   Really, want to be making enough at this I can quit my job by this summer, microstock is the frist step in my master plan to try to become an artist while avoiding starvation.  :P

Couple of hours later after I posted, I got another ESL for $50.00, not too bad for 3 1/2 month, 3 ESLs ;D

I seem to be getting a lot of EL sales but since I'm not yet bronze so I am stuck at $20 ~ only $6.60 commission. Hopefully will get bronze soon, Fotolia has been selling like crazy for me recently.

I think that MAXIMUM price gives you maximum earnings... If someone wants that image as EL, then will pay maximum with no hesitation.

I have mine set at 200$ and get about 1 - 3 a month which is the same as when I had them set lower.  I get more ELs at Fotolia than I do at any other site other than SS even set at that price.
Would I sell more if I set them a bit lower?  I don't know but there is something very satisfying about seeing 74$ commission every time I get one :)

Being silver my maximum in 100. I've set them at 75. I don't get that many ELs, but got one yesterday.

I've got all mine set to $100.  I'm racking my brain right now to remember if I have even sold one since I raised them that high.  I don't think I have.  My XL files are $40 though and I sell them all the time so it only made sense to make the jump on ELs.

Mine are set at $100 as well.  I still get about the same number I did when they were set at $50.  Never a lot of EL sales for me, but a few every month, and when I get them the payout is nice :)

Hadn't thought it before i had my price at 20credits :S
Question: is it still possible to raise the price for individual pictures only?

I had them at maximum, so 200 credits. Not out of greed, but because the terms of the license is very favorable for buyers and I think is fair that they pay the maximum allowed us to put (according ranking).
I can report already 5 EL at this maximum price. Must add for completeness of information, that for one full year I had... NONE!  :(

I notice that i can't set the price higher and maximum for me is 40 credits. is it because i am under 100 downloads?

yes, you should

I always set FT prices as high as possible, as soon as I am allowed - both EL and normal price - and never noticed a decrease in sales.

This makes me wonder why microstock prices - at all agengies - are so low: buyers need pictures and they will buy them even at twice the price.
