Since February I am having the hardest time with Fotolia.  I used to sell there steadily if not spectacularly a couple or three pics a day making my way up to just under 200 pics sold and then - nothing.  A week can go by without a sale.  Then they trickle in for a few days, onesies and twosies if I am lucky and then nothing again.
Anybody else sharing that experience?  What is going on?  I haven't been uploading much recently because I a) don't have that much new stuff right now and b) I am a bit disenchanted - but that shouldn't impact sales, right? -  ??? and  :'(

Thanks for your input,

Tina

Fotolia is slow for me as well. It surprises me, both because I think they have a nice concept, and because my portfolio there is growing constantly.

What I've also noticed, is that there's a comparatively small portion of my images that sells there. Even IS, where I have a smaller portfolio, sells a much broader selection of my photos, not to speak about SS, where anything sells.

When I read the title of this thread "totally crashing on Fotolia" I expected another thing.... I have a broadband connection and Fotolia is so frustratingly slow and cumbersome it drives me NUTS.   I always thought designers would be out of their mind searching for images there when browsing on other sites is so much easier....  (It can't be just me can it?)

Yes, I agree - sales on FT are so inconsistent.  Amount $ per sale is also so low.  Three sales yesterday and it didn't add up to a dollar.  I'll go a week with no sales, then 10 all of a sudden.  Don't they update in real time?

Fotolia is a consistant seller for me.  A good tip is that if you put your most important keywords first then this should help with your exposure if your not getting alot!

FT is a bit slow to me but in fact I think sales in the other sites have improved lately, making FT fall to 4th position in Feb and so far also in March.

It is however the only site I manage to sell ELs.

Adelaide

Ok, finally uploaded almost 200 to Fotolia (over the past few weeks), expecting a bit of a flury, due to being new, but like only 14 sales so far.

This site is ssslllloooowww, it never remembers my login, which is really annoying, not well laid out from a web point of view, and you can't seem to see your portfolio properly in my opinion. (sorry Fotolia)

I really hope they surprise me and have a following of loyal downloaders.

Thought it was just me cause I'm new there.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

DLs are pretty consistent, but slow too...

It has been slow but steady for me; and I had my first EL there, so I am thankful for that  :)

really? they have really taken off for me, I am now getting quite a few EL sales there which makes it my third best earner after IS and SS. At this rate they will soon be at the same level as those two, especially if they raise their prices a little.

I  love fotolia,a great place to sale your photos,
well  feb was ok for me despite little decrease  in my earnings and  march has not been great so far but I think (for me) things will go back to normal soon. it is where I sell the most EL,which makes it one of my favs among the sites.

My sales are increasing with fotolia but the amount I make from them is less than StockXpert and bigstock.  I hope they upgrade the site soon.  Been reading about an upgrade for months now.

I experienced the exact same thing.. 3,4 month ago.
Now the earnings increased a little bit, but in no comparison to the other sites.
Fotolia is falling far behind the other agencies.
no 5 of the big 6.

Wow, I thought I was the only one.  I posted a similar thread on fotolia forum... and all the replies there were something like what are you talking about, fotolia is the best, the sales are at the greatest point ever.  I had more sales in September with 60 files then I do now with almost 300.  This is the only site where I do not see an increase in downloads with increase of uploaded images.  At least, I am not the only one.  Hope it will pick up soon.

For me the FL sales are very stable month after month, almost the same amount every month.  However, my ranking  (7 days) is not in my favor when compared with my all times rank.  In order to keep the same rank, I need more downloads.

Which means...  FL sells more pictures altogether than the previous months.  This is a good sign about the wellness of the site.

If, with the same sales, the ranking status (7 day & all time) would reverse, then I would be quite concerned about the decline of the site.  But fortunately this is not the case at this point.  :)

I've also noticed an improvement in the past two days.  No EL this month so far, but there is still one half left. :)

So strange. last summer I had weekly downloads with 30 images on fotolia.  I had no downloads for the last two weeks and I have almost 300 files there now.  I had an EL sale last month, but overall it's been pathetic.  I ll give it another month, but if it continues like this I will not submit to fotolia anymore.

4 so far today.  ;)

Doing good for me.

My average is 3 dl a day, and an EL about once a week.

FT is by far my poorest performer - with 600+ images there I average a mere $1.50 per day. Needless to say, I'm not very happy with Fotolia.

have you made use of properly ordering your keywords or are they just in random order?

Yep, I order my keywords properly - I didn't when I started out there, and I'm not too sure it makes that much of a difference. Same images/keywords/categories used on all 4 of my sites, but FT just doesn't want to produce for some reason. Things are holding steady at under $0.10/image/month, which is a terrible ROI.

It's getting to the point where I dread going to post there ...

yeah it is odd how things vary from site to site, but i think it all comes back to sort order.  How to get lucky with the sort order on the other hand it beyond me.

I'm experiencing the same thing. Towards the end of 2006 very consistent downloads everyday, then two months ago, they dropped to a trickle.

Hope things pick up again soon for me, I was beginning to think Fotolia will take off very well.

cheers.

Even though I get consistent downloads at Fotolia, I wonder if the inconsistant sales have more to do with the instability of the site.  Somes days you can log on with no problem and other days it's frustratingly slow.  That would be a big turn off if you wanted to download some images!

One advantage to not having many downloads on Fotolia and still being a relative newbie, is that I still look at who is downloading my images. Although you obviously can't be 100% certain on all images, but it looks like the majority (if not all)  of my downloads are coming from Europe. From my understanding of the market, that seems rather strange, as I would expect the majority to come from the US.

Could it be that Fotolia is concentrating their marketing on the newer and expanding european market. I could be talking complete rubbbish, but I'm sure someone will tell me if I am  ;D

The majority of my downloads fo to Germany and France and of the rest most are to Europe.
I love the fact that you can trace so many of the downloads.  I have managed to find dozens this way.  It's a shame the other sites don't provide this information.

Interesting that you mention the Europe thing.  I see the same thing with my sales (lots of sales to German buyers) and I always wondered whether that's a "European thing" I have going - living in the US as a German, somehow hitting the European taste a little better than Americans (not other Europeans, of course).  But in light of what you say, that might not be true, fotolia seems to just get the majority of sales from Europe.

My sales have rebound a little - got three dls yesterday and felt like celebrating - but by and large they aren't back to 2006 levels.  I haven't fallen a lot in the "all time ranking" either - that's not a good sign.

Hmm. After looking through my downloads seeing who downloaded them. One was from Fotolia UK. Hmm. Wonder what that means.

I also notice this tendency of having Germans (mostly), French and Spaniards - all judging by the names only, is there any other way? - buying well at FT.  I'm not sure it has anything to do with "European taste" in my case, as I am a Brazilian in Brazil, but maybe they have more marketing efforts in Europe and I believe they had a variety of languages much earlier than other sites (am I wrong?).

I have tried searches in different languages there and it works reasonably well (there were problems when they launched the Portuguese version, though).  Given that they don't use controlled vocabulary as IS does, I think they do quite a good job.

(On a side note, StockXpert also works well in many languages, but my tests in Portuguese didn't turn well.  A simple non-ambiguous word such as Christmas was not translated into Portuguese).

Regards,
Adelaide
