Title: Video Royalties To Drop
Post by: Sean Locke Photography on March 09, 2022, 11:09
The same thing happened to motion graphics templates last month, and my sales were decimated.  Glad I didn't spend more time working on those. :(

"We are writing to let you know about important upcoming price tier updates for all Adobe Stock video clips.

On a rolling basis starting March 9, 2022, HD video clips will be available to license as part of Adobe Stock subscriptions (25 credits per month or larger), providing stock customers a simplified offering that includes standard images, templates, 3D, and audio tracks.

There is no change to the current royalty rate.

While there is no change to the current royalty rate, you may still notice a decrease in the per-video license royalty payments as HD videos will be available to subscription customers at a range of discounts, depending on the customer’s plan. 4K videos will be available to subscription customers at a 20% discount.

The current Adobe Stock royalty rate (35%) will stay the same, based on the price per clip. And HD and 4K video pricing will remain the same for all on-demand clips and for credit packs. To find details about royalties from subscription plans visit our Royalties page. "

And as expected, Adobe Stock follows the race to the bottom like any other agency, once again devaluing video production.

Is there a bottom commission for an HD video sold via subscription, and if so how much?

Edit:
HD - 25 credits per monthMonthly / Annual subscriber   $7.84 / $5.60
HD - 40 credits per monthMonthly / Annual subscriber   $5.25 / $4.20
HD - 350 credits per monthMonthly / Annual subscriber   $4.55 / $3.85
HD - 750 credits per monthMonthly / Annual subscriber   $3.50 / $2.80

Sigh. We can expect some $2.80 video sales soon then.

As if we hadn't yet reached rock bottom.

With gas and fuel prices going through the roof, inflation at an all-time high, interest on our savings at an all-time low, and the ongoing war in Ukraine causing stock markets to go crazy, we now also get shafted by nearly every agency. Gee, thanks.

Therefore, if I do the math correctly,
if a customer buys a credit pack for up to 500 video downloads,
I earn
$.0.056 for HD, or
$0.14 for 4K.

Do I shoot in 4K using an expensive camera with custom profiles, color correct, denoise, export in 4K ProRes for that amount?
On a personal note, it's more viable to only upload photos for a minimum of 0.33.
Unless photos sales also take the road to the subscription plan.

Even if someone buys a sinlge clip, that's $2.80 - $5.60 per clip now.
I suppose if one wants to keep on uploading videos, he just sends his content as is.
Shaken, uncorrected at H.264.
Since it's a game of numbers, some wil be rejected, some will be accepted.
That is what these prices lead us to do.
Treat them accordigly, low care for the low price they wil deserve.

I don't understand why the pricing of literally everything is going up, and we seem to be the only people (well, any small producer) not benefiting, because these buyers "want and need" access to this stuff.  That's what I was told.  "We are trying to address the very wide base of customers who want and need" these assets.

To clarify, the number of available downloads for videos is not the same as it is for photos in these subscription plans. Please refer to the royatly details page I shared in the other active thread on this topic for specific information on possible royalties through subscription plans currently available: https://contributor.stock.adobe.com/en/royalties

There is no such minimum for photo royalties any more. There used to be a floor of .33, .36 or .38 cents (depending on your lifetime earnings) but that went away with the introduction of the Creative Cloud Express plan

https://www.microstockgroup.com/fotolia-com/announcing-adobe-creative-cloud-express/ (https://www.microstockgroup.com/fotolia-com/announcing-adobe-creative-cloud-express/)

I license photos and used to have a 38 cent minimum, but now have seen amounts as low as 33 cents from "custom" royalties.

I have also been tracking my RPD over time (with my own spreadsheets as there are virtually no stats offered to contributors via Adobe Stock) and unsurprisingly it's been heading downward. For Q1 2020, 2021 and 2022 (so far) the RPDs are $1.03, $0.90 and $0.77

Contributors across the board and across media types are being squeezed. It sucks.

Masybe I was reading the new earnings breakdown fast and my brain froze.
What do I earn per video in this case?
HD - 16-500 CREDIT PACK OR ON-DEMAND
4K - SUBSCRIPTION, 40-500 CREDIT PACK OR ON-DEMAND

English is not my mother language but my question was clear, I think.
I see the description.
I just do not understand what 16-500 or 40-500 mean.
Therefore, I wil have to repeat.
Can someone please tell me what will I earn per video in the above cases?
I do not want a link reference, I see it.
Under this range, 16-500 or 40-500, what do I earn per sinlge video?

As I read this (and I am a native English speaker), I think you would receive $22.40 per HD video if someone bought a 500-credit pack, $28.00 if they bought a 16-credit pack. The amounts would vary between those extremes if someone bought (for example) a 200-credit pack.

Same thing for 4K video. You'd earn $70 per video if they bought a 40-credit pack and $56 per video if they bought a 500-credit pack. Varying amounts per video for the in-between pack sizes.

Does that make it more clear (and Mat can correct me if even a native speaker doesn't interpret the page correctly!!)?

As listed in the chart I've linked above, credit packs ranging from 16-500 pay out for HD videos on a scale from $22.40 - $28.00. Royalties on 4K clips purchsed with credits bought in packs ranging from 40-500 are from $56 - $70.

Well on the bright side my Pond5 Exclusive is very strong and earning me on average $47 per download!!!

But from now on, even Pond 5 exclusive will give us 60% of whatever they discount to the customer, after the  recent announcement. Does this still make it worth being exclusive? You will never know what you might earn.

I'm not Pond5 exclusive but glad to say I'm having my BME with the platform this month. Hopefully my recent video uploads are going to support my port with sustained increased sales.

Video Sales this month compared to last 2 months. Agency % of Total Video sales dollars.

                               Mar 2022                  Feb 2022      Jan 2022
SS                               46%                         43%            50%
P5 (Non-Excl)               38%                         13%            15%
AS                               16%                         44%            35%

AS not looking good. P5 going up. Cart Sales on SS have been good.

(For comparison: I sell on average 40+ video downloads per month across 3 agencies. Portfolio size: 3,000+ clips)

This perception that 'cheap = sell more', doesn't always work.  I put UP my prices on my direct sales shops this month (for photos), and I've sold more this month than ever before. Plus I've attracted some really good return buyers, who have told me they valued the quality of my work compared to what others are offering.

"Cheap" can have the perception that 'cheap prices = cheap quality'.

ETA: I've learnt a lot from focusing on my direct sales this past 6 months and being able to talk directly to my buyers. The bottom line is that if people are going to pay for photos (and I'm guessing its true for video as well) then they want quality. Otherwise nowadays they can just shoot it themselves with their smart phones. And if they can get what they want with good quality, then they are happy to pay more.

What we need now is an agency that pays quality commissions for quality work. So maybe at this stage, P5 is the best place to sell videos. Pity they dont sell many photos.

I am quite happy with P5 sales. I have exclusive and non-exclusive accounts. One of the few fair agencies out there. They are always the last to drop prices when they are forced because all the others go rock bottom with prices and commissions.

I think their exclusive move was brilliant and with 60% commission, kudos for them. If there is want agency I want to succeed over most of the others is this one.

Since early 2020 my video sales have been steadily declining, I'm considering changing my strategy and moving to exclusive with an agency, not sure which one yet.

I received an email from Pond5 inviting me to create an exclusive account. I've never considered doing this but am now, at least with a portion of new clips.

With the latest antics on Shutterstock losing content (which I just counted my portfolio and have at least 7 videos vanished) Adobe Stock seldom sell videos and IStock has low commissions, I think Pond5 exclusive is worth a go.

The least would have been to allow contributors to opt out from this and "decide" whenever they want to have a loss of income...

So, in other industries firms are rising pay as people combat with inflation and demand more money. We constantly loose. Wicked. With inflation over 10%, rising costs everywhere we keep getting less and less. Images or video, does not matter

Yes, the companies are raising the salaries of their employees. But in order to do this they have to cut the royalties for the contributors.
