But if I sit back and think about it, they nearly always accept the best photos and reject the worst.

I find the opposite.  At least when it comes to overall sales.

The big exception is isolated shots.  Has anybody ever had an isolated anything rejected by them?

Yes, I have.  And they have all been accepted to at least 4 other sites.  I'm at a loss as to what to submit.

Add me to the list.  My rejections have skyrocketed there in the past week or two and they are totally random.

I have found that over the last 2 months or so Fotolia have been more picky.

But I wouldn't say their rejections are random.

SNIP

I think the rather vague rejection reasons they use can make their rejections SEEM random.  But if I sit back and think about it, they nearly always accept the best photos and reject the worst.

If they actually rejected the worst photos and accepted the best like you say then nobody would be complaining, would they?

The fact is they usually accept pretty near everything I send them and then out of the blue they'll reject half a batch of images.  Then they'll go back to accepting everything again.

This would suggest a rogue reviewer more than it would any consistent change in quality standards, would it not?  Hence my use of the term "random" :)

I had 8 of 9 refused for the "Fotolia sells photos to use in brochures and magazines...yours is not stock..." reason. Prior I haven't had any problems (97% acceptance). But they're still in my top 3 best agencies so I have no plans on stopping uploads. Try uploading at a different time of day when another reviewer is at the helm...Atilla must sleep SOMETIME.  ;)

maybe Atilla needs a holiday ...
somewhere there's lots of jaws in the water, so he doesn't come back to work lol

then everyone will be happy with fotolia again ! ;D

My sales have never returned to the level before V2.

Perhaps the unreasonable rejections have something to do with their confidence (or the lack of ) in finding buyers for us.

May I ask, how many images have you uploaded and aproved after V2?

I've haven't had a rejection for like a year on fotolia. It's my top selling agency and I'm 154 images from Emerald which will double my income there.

I will have to agree that they probably raised their quality standards lately. I'm sure if good quality shots of subjects related to one of their conceptual categories a taken, they'll definately accept them.

Cheers

FT has more images than what I have with most other agencies, but the performance is very disappointing and rejections arbitrary to say the least. They tend to accept model and commercial shots and reject shots which are actually doing well with other sites for "types of photograph".

As someone else said in the above, if they only reject our worst images, that would be totally acceptable. It also means that our sales should improve as we increase our portfolio. But this is not my experience.

Well that's just silly.  They're clearly both completely different.

I wonder sometimes if fotolia only wants one picture of every subject in the library.

One apple...
One orange...
One goldfish in a business suit jumping out of a laptop...

No they would say they have too many of these... perhaps  One goldfish in a business suit jumping out of a laptop while eating an apple and balancing on the orange :):)

this thread has made me feel much better I've gone from 80-90% acceptance to 40-50%

and personally there is no consistancy, no service, and a partly broken site. FT always strike me as someone who knocked up a template site to make some fast money and dont seem to have the knowhow or interest in their contributors or even their site for thinking long term.

FT used never to reject anything I submitted. Lately, though, I've been getting rejections for "too many on site" or "type of photo" as well, also my sales there have slowed to a tiny trickle. I submit mainly isolations.

And anyone else noticed that the little slide show on their front page is still displaying Christmas images???

each company has their own specific agenda.
you just need to investigate to see what Fotolia wants NOW,
not what they 've always wanted .
you cannot assume anymore that just because the others like your photos that Fotolia will too.
then what would be the point of having the other 5 in the Big 6?
i think that explains the shift of some sites.

i shoot to Fotolia specs and now i get better results.
before i haven't the clue as to what they want and i had a terrible percentage of acceptance. that changed though.

be more selective... exclusive if you like... the sites are no longer equal.

I used to get 80-90% acceptance which is about what I get everywhere except istock about 60%.  But I had 11 of 30 last batch, and 7 of 28  this batch.  All 'type of photograph' or overabundant category.
I can live with changing standards, i can accept that some categories are 'full' but they are so inconsistent.  If they come along and say to everyone, hey we dont want images of xxx anymore etc etc. it would save people a lot of time and anguish and them a lot of reviewers time / money.
I average between 30-50 uploads a week, and going through the last few hundred rejections I cannot work out what they are saying is full etc.  background rejected last week, similar accepted this week.  Personally I hate their upload with the 7 keywords and there horrible catgories and have always actually prefered even istocks to theirs (of course StockXpert / 123 are much better). I think I need to take a break from them.

end my little rant and now I feel a bit better :)

my situation is the reverse of yours. i was being hammered with rejections then when i changed my shooting style for stock, i got almost all accepted. until last night, 3 rejects in a row... so i said, "ok, they had enough good ones.stop here ! " ;D
no, seriously, i think fotolia's rejects when they tell me why, are all reasonable. at least with most of the reviewers, they tell me "if you do xxx and then re-submit."  i like that, instead of the vague rejects
with no reasons, which fotolia don't do .

as for telling what not to submit. another site did just that. send us xxx
and when i send them that, they rejected both shots saying, " we don't want these types of shot".

at least, fotolia works with me... finally. i think it's a case of us trying to understand what they really want.
as i said before, customers' need change ... so obviously fotolia's demands will too.

I've never had the similar problem, but the type rejection has thus far destroyed my port there.  My sales a FT are crap, about equal to BigStock (well behind DT, IS and SS, BigStock is beating them this month too), and I think that a big reason is that 7 of my top 10 overall best selling images across all sites were rejected for type of photo.  In my tracking spreadsheet, when I sort by earnings FT is the only one with any significant amount of red (meaning rejection) near the top.

Even though may sales elsewhere are better, DT is the only one that is very accurate at predicting the performance of my port overall, hardly any of my shots that have sold anywhere have been rejected by them, the bulk of shots they have rejected have not sold anywhere, which tells me that their reviewers are the best at understanding shot saleability, whereas FT is simply awful at it.

I agree totally. For me, Fotolia is below BigStock, IS, 123RF, SX...far below DT and far, faaar away from SS. About their search engine...No comment. They are still talking that their search engine works fine.

I don't seem to have much of a problem with SS, DT, BigStock, 123, CanStockPhoto or any of the other smaller sites.  However, for the past 2 weeks IS has turned down everything I uploaded.  Yes 100% rejected at IS.  Now keep in mind that I submit the same images at every site.  I really have to wonder if they are trying to get me to close my account?  It's almost like they really don't want any new photographers all of the sudden.  My acceptance rate at IS is only 30% while at all the others it's 80% or better.  What gets me is I shoot with a Canon EOS 20D on white using a 6 light flash system and a light meter for everything.  At first when I signed up they accepted about 60% of my shots.  I've not changed anything in my studio, nor have I tried anything new on photoshop.  But for the past 2 weeks that have really gone way overboard with the rejections.  Should I just give up or is this the IS way?  If they don't want my work then fine, they should just say it and save me the frustration of constant rejection.

P.S.  SS has been very good for me.  My acceptance rate there is above 80% and more than 50% of thise images have sold.  After only 2 weeks on SS I have sold 80 images with a portfolio of only 60 images.  I have only submitted 72 to them.  SS is at the top of my list while IS remains at the bottom!!!

I also totally agree. I found many posts where successful people on SS wrote about the same problem on IS
