I think it's ebb and flow - except the flow can be a trickle at times if the number of new contributors is greater than the number of new purchasers.

I am often surprized by the fact that people with similar size ports to mine will have a fantastic month when mine is bad, and the next month I will have a BME, and theirs will be poor.  Search engine rotations and seasons must play a large part.

On another note - I had a BME in total indidvidual sales (not in $ due to less EL's) on SS last month, and this month so far I am having the poorest month so far by FAR.  I haven't sent anything over in about 2 weeks though, but this past week is by far the worst performance I have ever had with SS.

Yet, I have had a very decent week on DT, IS and StockXpert (for the first time StockXpert).

Edit:  Re SS - has there been a search enginge tweak in the past 12 weeks or so that is giving a bit of exposure to older photos and less exposure to new uploads?

Justice - unless you say something outright scandalous/slanderous about a specific agency I doubt it would be worth their effort to punish an individual over something they say in a forum.  They would be shooting their own foot if (your) photos are spectacular and they are withholding them from buyers.

I notice exactly the same trend as Justice, except for iS where I have  a little more downloads than usual.

My sales are down this month at SS and no sales at all at IS.  Fotolia is up for me this month with a portfolio of only 136 images.  In all fairness my portfolio is small at IS so I don't see a real problem.   However, I guess it's just one of those things.  Either the time of year or a search engine tweak?  Who knows really?  I'll take the good with the bad.  After all, what else can I really do other than add to my portfolio and keep on keeping on.

My downloads increase as I upload more.  There could be lots of reasons why this doesn't work for some people.  It is impossible to know why without seeing a portfolio.

Totally correct!

Sites are indeed sensitive regarding negative comments. So much so they have developed the ability to actually read those thoughts through the keyboard. So do what I do and place some aluminum foil over the keyboard. It not only blocks alpha brain waves from being transmitted, it also eliminates pesky drool damage.

exactly for this reason I use the stupid nickname here instead of my usual business name I use on all pages...
I may be a bit paranoid but I am not going to take the risk :-)

Sorry, sounds a bit paranoid to me.  I am perfectly happy to stand behind anything I say on any forum.

I see it as a benefit that admins from the agencies read these forums.  I have seen it happen more than once that when members of a microstock forum are upset about something a site is doing, then the site re-evaluates their policy and may modify the policy that is causing the uproar.

Posting anonymously isn't as effective for change because the sites don't know how seriously to take you - you could be a top seller who's livelihood is dramatically affected, or a hobbyist with 10 accepted pics in your portfolio.

Besides, in my case the lack on anonymity keeps me from running off on unproductive rants (most of the time) ;)

I am newbie and have stats based only on one site (no downloads on other sites) and it seems that so far number of unique downloads is around 1/2 of my portfolio size.  I just started 2 months ago so I think it's too early to draw any conclusions  ;)

Considering the source (Justice has a conspiracy theory that anyone who makes good money in microstock is somehow directly connected with one or more microstock sites), I wouldn't give this idea much realistic consideration.

this month only on fotolia my downloads decreased catastrophically. DT, SS, IS, StockXpert, BigStock go as always in the last 5 months with short ups and downs.

I think there are several reasons we're reading on tons of threads...

Thanks for putting it in perspective Helix.  It explains a lot :)

This may be why the Member Since and number of posts is useful information, rather than the nice icons at the bottom.

Without being specific or directing this at Justice, who has been around less than a month and has posted just six messages, there's also someone else new with May 03 a his join date, who's been hyping one site for paying 70% and criticizing people who sell photos for $1.

Not that new people are always just showing up for a brief drive by posting spree with a personal agenda or some hype, but knowing that someone just showed up, can at least give us a perspective on the potential motivations and the source.

That was probably too much information, but I'm saying, consider the source of messages. ;)
