My images do quite well at FT, so I don't believe we get lost in the crowd, at least if our keywords are good.  My performance at IS is better after the disambiguation thing - I'm not sure it's a coincidence or not, given that despite this, there is still a lot of keyword spamming, so things are not perfect for a buyer yet (but he can now at least have some images out of his searches).

Adelaide

The usual weekly update

FT 2,091,567 [2,038,858] +52,709
SS 1,370,882 [1,351,038] +19,844
IS 1,352,660 [1,335,000] +17,660

DT   870,000* [860,000] +10,000
BigStock 795,000 [781,000] +14,000
123 [500,000+]

StockXpert 360,625
CanStockPhoto 343,705 [338,944] +4,761
FP   157,296 [151,184] +6,112

SPM  95,301 [94,308] +993

*4th Jan figure so BigStock aren't catching up on DT as fast as you would think

What does it all mean?

Not a lot but at least you can see which sites still have photographers confidence and are continuing to upload.

Regarding FT's 2 million images I strongly suspect (and I am sure I am not alone) they count their free images so there isn't really 2 million images for your images to be lost in though for popular subjects on any site good keywording is vital.

why fotolia continues to toot their horn with all those images when they don't really have that many (in comparison to how everyone else counts their images) is beyond me.

Interesting data. I also read that IS has over 30k images in the queue. IS has 25k added last week alone.

And in the SS forum even some contributors with large portfolios start to notice a slowdown (while uploading more images).  http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16101&start=0

Seems that things start to get crazy on the supply side of the business.
Whats your experience?

My sales went up in Jan, but I increased my portfolio a lot as well in Dec/Jan.

This market is bound to become over-saturated. Not only are there increasing numbers of photographers, but they all seem to upload the same technically perfect but conceptually boring photos that they believe will become best-sellers.

The challenge to survive with increasing sales will be to see into the future, and find new areas, new angles and new motives. Smiling pretty girl with headphones apparently sells very well, but there is a limit as to how many are needed, I guess.

For the agencies, the challenge will be to find new markets, both with regards to types of customers, but even more with regards to geography. From the download time of day, it's easy to see that most of the downloads are in America, so Europe is lagging behind here. Even more so is Asia, where more than half of the world population lives. Many Asian countries are relatively poor, but not all, and it's a huge market with different needs and a different taste from the western hemisphere.

I really don't think that things have already to start crazy.
I guess it will become harder and harder to submit those headphones smiling babes, or those "really rare" American flags or flowers.
But there is a lot of room for new images and there are some unexploited areas.
The real problem for me is when buyers start to really complain about keyword spam.

The other day I did a search i can't remember where for "water background" and guess what, the first pic i got (first line, left column) was some pretty naked girl laying on her back

I guess we can expect some hard rejections in the future but not as soon as one can think.

The markets thing will be a natural development of this business model and I guess with time more and more European and Asian clients will arrive.

I guess and hope this will be a very competitive but profitable market in the future

... not sure what was going on at iStock ...

I've had a wodge of images approved at IS these past few days. They show up on my file management page but not in my portfolio. Nor do they appear when I search on their keywords. (And we're well outside the 24hr they allow for the database to be updated.)

I don't know if this affects the numbers, but if this is happening to everybody then thousands of images must be 'missing'

StockXpert now has over 448,000 images.

That is quite a jump (82,000) from last time (366,000 on 1/15). Maybe that is one reason why they are rejecting so many images recently.

Interesting, I appear to be having the same problem with a few of my images.  I have a few photos that were accepted last week and they are not searchable either.  One was accepted on 02/07 (#2821552) and the other on 02/08 (#2827143).  Neither are findable via the search engine.

Have you reported this to admin?

EDIT: Just found a thread on IS.  Admin is aware of the problem.  Here is the thread in case anyone is interested:

I wonder if IS have some new 'improvement' up their sleeve, and this is why there's a lag.

Yikes!   :-\

How long ago did IS reach the 1million milestone?  It's on 1.5 now, so quickly, no?
