For me its, by far, the most discusting thing in the uploading process. I love sites like LO or Imagekind for not including them.

I know categories are necessary but...do you know any way of doing the process less painful?

Well, in DT you can copy them from other images.  In IS only from the latest five or so.  What I do in IS when I have an image I can take advantage is to edit it and save it (even without changing anything).  It will then appear in the latest five list.  In FT there is a huge list of the latest used ones.  In BigStock you can copy from the latest one.  No such facility in StockXpert, but at least there you can upload or edit a group of images at once.

But I agree categories are a nightmare, and sometimes not an easy task to pick one.

And at StockXpert you can skip the categories. I think SS has the best model of sites that use them. Simple and fast

And could anybody tell me what these categories are for???

Honestly, are they useful for anyone?  I don't even know how to make a search using categories (in fact, I don't care!)...

Maybe that their utility is to slow down the process of uploading ;D

When discussing translation problems in FT, I was told that they use categories with the keywords as part of the search process when using other languages.  They don't actually translate keywords into the many languages, but translated search terms.  At least this is what I understood.  I can retrieve this answer if you're interested, I'm quite sure I have it.

They don't actually translate keywords into the many languages, but translated search terms.

But you don't specify the category when you do a search, so even if they translate the search term before doing the search, categories are useless...

If the answer you are reffering to is not too far, I would appreciate to read more about this.

Thanks Adelaide

This is a translation (no pun intended, it is originally in Portuguese) of their explanation:

Quote
The keywords you assign to your image are never translated, only the categories where the photos are inserted are equal and equivalent in all languages.
For example: Photo of a hang glider flying over Rio.
Category:  sport & leisure - aerial sports (your photo will be available in this category in each Fotolia)
Keywords: sky, fly, hang glider, city, etc will only appear with the photo when the search is made in that original language.

Maybe the category thing only helps with that Similia thing.  Maybe instead of IS's CV they have some correlation between keywords and categories to refine the search with the more appropriate meaning.

Adelaide

Thank you Adelaide,

So from what I understand, in FT, when you search for a photo, only the keywords that are of the same language than the search terms are used?

I guess you're right, categories must be used in some secret way to show results...

And I still don't like putting my photos into categories!  :)

Claude,

I don't understand how it works either, but many of my FT sales are to German-speaking buyers (given that sales info) which I suppose would be using FT DE.  So their trick somehow works.  :)

Adelaide
