Title: Which site is best for Landscape/Animal photos?
Post by: Hoodie Ninja on May 23, 2008, 12:53
Most of my photos are of landscape and animals and I was wondering which sites sell best for those types of pictures.

are you referring to "selling" or just getting accepted?
personally, i would say crestock tends to like nature and animals.

the others too, but only in rare cases. it has to be unlike what they already have. but careful with your selective focus, stock sites consider that "out of focus"  ;)

once again, i reiterate...this is "acceptance percentage" not selling percentage i'm referring to, as i just uploaded these images only a couple of weeks ago.

IS has taken all of the landscapes I've submitted so far (4 of the 42 photos online there) and just accepted a photo of my black cat sitting on the deck banister. They also seem to accept A LOT of flower photos.

I do mostly nature related photos.  As far as which sites are more likely to accept them, in my experience these are the acceptance rates I have.

Shutterstock 90%
Istock 76%
Dreamstime 72%
Fotolia 82%
Bigstock 97%
123RF 97%
I also started submitting photos to YayMicro and they have taken everything so far.

As far as sales go, this is how my sales have gone.

1st Shutterstock
2nd Istock
3rd Dreamstime
4th Fotolia
5th Bigstock
6th 123RF

Of course, everyone's experience will be a little different, but this has been mine.

I am referring to selling.  I am not currently on Crestock, but perhaps I will give them a try.  SS is doing well for me on those types of photos so they are my main focus.  I know what you mean about selective focus.  I have had quite a few pictures rejected.

BUMP!  IS has been the best for me for landscapes and nature photos; especially my old growth Pacific North-West coastal rainforest stuff.  SS has been good for me too, but I've made alot more money with IS.

I have quite a few pictures on SS and have been doing well (I think).  With the new year, I have decided to start focusing on the other sites and see how I do.  With the small amount of pictures I originally uploaded on the other sites, if you take # of pictures versus $$ I've made, I'd say IS and Dreamstime would be where I need to focus the most.  However, I had a picture purchased from Fotolia that was published in a book selling at Costco on Waterfalls so I have to admit that makes me want to do more with them as well.  ;D

Not sure about sales-wise as I don't keep tab of specs. However, I do notice MostPhotos have some incredible nature and landscape images.

I would say SS for landscape and animals, IS is also pretty good but only for animals.

MOST PHOTOS!!! :-\...tan510 I agree as far as they have some beautiful lanscapes pictures there, and allot that are beautiful just as thumbnails...I'm sure this photographer is talking about selling them not just looking at them in lonely cold nights ::)

I will keep them in mind.  They don't look like a big earner, but when I'm ready to delve into some of the "lesser" sites, I will look at them.  Thanks  :)

My guess landscape/nature shots are fraction of percent on any sites so simply select the one with most sale volume :-)

Yes, I am definitely talking about sales, not viewing.   ;)

Thanks.  So far I've been doing decent on SS.  I'm working on shooting other types of shots, but I have a huge amount of landscape/nature/animal shots that I've already taken and it's also my main passion for photography.  I'm just doing the stock to support my "habit" (need for better gear).  ;D

Most of my shots are nature too. I can only see regular payouts at SS. All others do not have enough customers interested in nature.

I have done a few non-nature shots, and I will take more in the future.  I'm trying to balance my time with taking pictures of what I enjoy (nature) and what makes me money to buy the camera I want to take the pictures I enjoy.  ;D

Most of my work is landscape or animals, and DT seems to provide the most sales for me with BS being a close second.  Pretty near all sites accept those types of images.

Wow, this is a buried blog that is pulling The Crow stunt to resurrection itself, lol.

seriously, I am not a landscape/nature person, but I know of one outstanding person who seems to be doing well with BigStock.

I sell some travel images of Tunisia with BigStock. Also, my good friend Larry is with BigStock and he does awesomely well with a portfolio of landscape and wilderness . Psst, much much better than me .

I don't have the stats to back this up, but I suspect iStock has done better than Shutterstock for my landscapes.  Shutterstock tends to earn small to moderate amounts across a wide swath of my portfolio, where iStock either sells a lot of a photo or little to nothing.  Also, Shutterstock seems to do better for me with people shots, although that's in part because they allow me to submit so many more.

I take some landscape photos, a lot of horse pictures and tons of DOGS!  I have seen the most sales from Fotolia (especially for dogs and horses), but they only accept about 25% of my submitted images. FT seems to prefer West Coast images of the United States.   I've also had success with Dreamstime, Shutterstock and Istock (definitely have more rejected than accepted at Istock - but the dogs and horses accepted DO sell).

Bigstock for me has been a DISSMAL failure with animal shots and landscapes (I've had plenty accepted -just no sales).  For small companies I've sold a handful at 123rf, only a very small portfolio there though (less than 50).

Overall, my acceptance ratios are about 50%.  I've been active since Aug. 2008 and I've made roughly $200.  My biggest portfolio is on DT with 169 images, my smallest is at Istock which is less than 25.

Hope this helps.

I find SS good, particularly if you have a landmark in landscapes.

SS is probably best for anything for most of people but I am not sure if this is sign of good correlation :-)
