Title: Getty Selling Images On Fine Art America
Post by: donding on January 15, 2013, 11:07
In case no one knows what Fine Art America is, it is basically a place you can put your portfolio to sell as prints. You pay $30.00 a year and you keep all the proceeds from the sale. I noticed from a thread on there that there was a photographer who found his photo on Fine Art America being sold there under Getty Images. Getty has their own port on there.

This discussion was about 6 months ago on Flicker. Here is the flicker link about the discussion.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/olympusesystem/discuss/72157630814751472/ (http://www.flickr.com/groups/olympusesystem/discuss/72157630814751472/)

The name of the photographer is under the view, but when you click on the view there is no link back to their portfolio on Getty, it is sold directly from Fine Art America. Can Getty sale prints from a competing site that is not owned by them?

This may be old news on here, but in case it isn't just thought I'd let you know.

So one of the images there is an RM image from a National Geo photographer (http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/alarcon-terrace-conquistador-aisle-grand-high-res-stock-photography/82112504). Here's the page on Fine Art America  (http://fineartamerica.com/featured/1-a-monsoon-storm-in-the-grand-canyon-david-edwards.html)from the Getty Art

I wonder if Getty contributors (a) have an option to avoid this sale and (b) know that this is an avenue Getty pursues? I was pretty surprised to see this (but am wondering if I should try a Fine Art America account too!)

Thanks for getting the right link up there Pixart. It may have been because it was the profile link and you have to be a member to see it? I don't know.

(but am wondering if I should try a Fine Art America account too!)

You have to do a lot of self promotion. They don't advertise for you and it isn't a "let's see if this is stock worthy or not site" Anyone can upload there and a lot of painters do this. You can set your own prices there and if you don't want to do the POD, they let you set up your own website so you can sale direct but the printing and transactions go through you with a private site, not the POD part. All costs for framing and such is paid for by the buyer on the POD part, so that is above the cost you post and you do not get paid for that part of it. It costs $30.00 a year. Look at the recently sold, under the "shop" tab at the top to get an idea of what type sales there. I just started it so I can't say how well it works.

Getty does the same thing on Zazzle.  I assume they might be on some of the other POD sites as well.

They don't appear to give credit to the photographer, unless I'm missing something.

Corbis, National Geographic and ironically Google also sale there although the Google things appear just to be their various Google slogans

   v. promotes an illegal or unauthorized copy of another person's copyrighted work, such as providing          pirated computer programs or links to them, providing information to circumvent manufacture-installed copy-protect devices, or providing pirated music or links to pirated music files;

I guess the answer is yes, but the keyword is "have the right to grant license" which may be considered the Getty contract.

Getty may have disappeared from FAA but they're still at greatBIGcanvas, a CafePress offshoot, with what looks like a Flickr sourced collection. They seem to be selling canvas prints at about FAA's cost price! I wonder who makes any money...
