Just received the following mail from Zoonar:

Dear photographers,

we have important news for you:

1. We are pleased to present Getty Images as our new distribution partner. As of now you can only submit photos which don’t require a model or property release. We hope to offer you a new release management tool by the middle of 2012, which will make it possible for you to submit photos that require a release. Getty Images has generated high sales through its platforms Jupiterimages and Thinkstock which has made many photographers want to submit photos for this partner. We are expectant to see how many photos will be accepted by Getty Images. We have no figures based on experience yet, but we hope that most of your photos will be accepted. It is required however, that your submitted photos are not already on sale at Veer or Corbis.

2. We are also pleased about the number of submitted photos in our partner system. Because of high revenue generated by Getty, AGE, DPP Fotofinder and the other partners we get a lot more submissions now than a few months ago. Unfortunately, our costs for keywording, checking, translating, captioning and deleting photos has risen considerably.

For our partner system to be sustained and further expanded we need to decrease the commission rate from 60% to now 50%. We will change our terms and conditions accordingly, starting on 06/01/2012. From then on your commission rate for all sales through our partner network will be 50%. For your sales at Zoonar you will still get a commission rate of up to 80%.

Because we change our terms and conditions on 06/01/2012 you have a special right of termination within a period of four weeks beginning at reception of this newsletter. Should you wish to withdraw your photos from our partners please send us an email to [email protected] with your username and the names of the partners you wish to withdraw from until 04/30/2012.
We kindly ask you for your understanding once more and we assure you that the additional money we receive is invested in our partner network and the distribution of your photos.

Does this just mean they will put images on Thinkstock and the other subs sites? 50% of those commissions isn't much.

More than likely. It won't be like imgs will be for sale on the authentic Getty. If past changes to Getty terms haven't ticked off enough photographers there, this would certainly send them over the edge. And you can already hear the familiar Getty tune being sung in the near background - La Di Da Reduced Royalties La Di Da.

Here's a little more detail from Zoonar's site as to what Getty channels they will be using:

Getty Images is probably the best known global picture agency. You can submit RF photos of all price ranges to Getty Images. Your photos will be distributed via the Getty platforms Jupiterimages, Thinkstock and Photolibrary, perhaps via Photos.com too. Photolibrary was acquired by Getty Images in 2011, but still sells photos in the Asian market.

Getty Images generates very high sales numbers. Therefore, we strongly recommend you accept this partner. Some photos on Photolibrary and Jupiterimages are sold at very high prices. However, the majority of photos are sold via subscription at low prices and in large numbers.

I'm afraid that Zoonar contributors are the ones that upload their images to 15+ different sites and 99% of them also upload their images to Veer.

Yeah. The funny thing is that this passage is not in the partner agreement stuff on their website. I also don't quite see how this would be managed...

I never got any sales there. Ironically, when I even had the Alamy partner on there. Then I stopped uploading and decided to submit to Alamy on my own. Then I got sales on Alamy. Yeah, I'd rather just upload to the sites myself. These "partner" things seem to be somewhat confusing.

Why only Corbis is forbidden, why not Alamy or SS etc...?

Hmm... I have received some money from Getty via Zoonar. But I have never accepted Getty as a partner and I submit to Veer...

Did you have Photolibrary as a partner? Getty acquired them a while back. I remember getting a note about that from Zoonar, at which point I removed all my content from that particular partner. Then a couple of weeks ago I got notice of a sale from Getty that dated back to December. I assume it was a Photolibrary sale that only took three months to report.

Yes I had Photolibrary as a partner... I never noticed that it had changed to Getty. I hate thode Getty guys, they are everywhere!

i've had ZERO sales from these guys, so dont think it'll matter much what happens from here on out -

hahaha ... they say Getty and it turns out to be Photos.com, Thinkstock, and Photolibrary....

moreover they slash fees to 50% as costs are unsustainable.

I am not sure but I think they actually have their own editorial people look at the pictures before they release them to partners. Some pictures go to "refused" for a certain partner almost immediately, while the rest then stays for weeks or months in "released". To me that indicates that someone at Zoonar decided not to send that particular file.

Also, since they allow mingling of languages in keywords and most others do not, I suppose they have to edit out (or translate) keywords by hand. Their own fault, really, but us paying for agency inefficiency isn't new or limited to Zoonar.

here is a misunderstanding. The rule with Veer/Corbis is only FOR NEW PHOTOS that you are submitting NOW at Zoonar. Not for the ones, that are already submitted.
