Canon is offering some excellent "instant" rebates between now and 11 July. Above is a link to Adorama's Canon equipment with rebates.

I got a rebate £50 off canon for my 450D but why not reduce the price in the first place with out havin to send in the receipt to Canon to get it

Because they hope you will forget, are lazy, or don't follow the exact rules (and thus don't qualify).

On top of that, many people start spending even more when they see a discount. Also all the money that stays at Canon before it is sent to buyers, probably brings quite a nice sum of money if they deal with it correctly.

Cool! I just ordered the 70-200 F4 IS yesterday (from Amazon) and didn't even realize there was a rebate. But I got the same price Adorama is advertising, so seems like I got it anyway

I went and compared the prices for the lens you bought:
BH: 1025$ (after the rebate) ~ 764€
Cheapest I could find in Slovenia: 1300 €
