Just a simple thought:
After working through the 1370 stock related photos I took during my vacation (working a few nights till 2h00 in the mornings), selecting, post production editing, describing, key-wording, uploading and indexing the selected ones, I just had a brief thought of those morons on the internet telling people:

"Sell your pictures on the internet, it is easy money!"

If it is easy you are surely not doing it right and you are for sure not going make much money.

)

Easy money? I do this full time and have done so for over 20 years, and this is not easy money. I work my arse off, I put in very long hours, I have expenses that I pay up front for the shoots, I have thousands of dollars worth of equipment that depreciates, and all this for an income that goes up and down like a yo-yo. Sure I make good money shooting stock, but I also work very hard at it. In the sense that I would not want to do anything else and I love what I do... Yeah, now that is easy money

It's totally easy money. You just have to put in the time to learn how to to do it and dedicate yourself to obsessively improving your skills. After that, no big deal.

Problem is what certain sites and expert photographers deems to be skills, some of our "expert" stock sites see as failures (like anything with depth of field, use of shadows, etc.)

Easy money - I also find this statement funny

I've also saw blogs in internet which tells how to earn money in microstock (there's a lot of them there now)... and many of it also says that it's easy way without lot of hard work to earn additional 500-1000 or more usd/month...It's no secret they tell so because it's just way to attract contributors and get more refferals for themselves. On the other hand, once, some time ago i saw some guy in Istock (non -exclusive contributor) who only with 20 photos portfolio there has more than several thousand sales ! I guess in shutter he gets even more. But it is extremely rare exception.

I wouldn't call it easy money because you get money without working, but if you like what you do, it WILL be easy money even if you work your ass off for it. I know I spend sleepless nights shooting and editing, and often go to bed with my eyes hurting from so much concentrating on the screen. But I still call it easy money, because it's the only thing I enjoy doing. Let's say I'd work at an office where I'd get even more money and the job would be easier. I wouldn't call that easy money, because I'd curse my life everyday while doing it.

The way I have been brought up, I never understood the concept of "easy money" unless you are involved in criminal activities where your health might be severely at risk.

So whatever these people claim online, if it's easy it's BS.

For me easy money = effortless (which stock photography definitely is not).

It is not about loving what you do, else a lumberjack who loves his work should also call what he does easy money.

It's easy to guess why they say easy money, since they are seeking affiliates.

But I am pretty sure it's not easy money for them as well: all they are probably obtaining is recruiting lots of random affiliates that will quit as soon as they realise it's not so easy. Of course they will still affiliate some good photographers now and then.

It's OT I know but I always wondered how these scumbags could keep up their good spirit because I cannot grasp the idea of them finding so many gullible people that will earn them enough money to make a living.

I remember years ago, I got tons of messages in my Inbox on Youtube, basically just with people who tell everyone in their videos in a very excited way how anyone, with no training can become a trillionaire in one week without doing any work.

Why are people soooooo stupid to believe this?

I have a relative who believes it all and has got himself into enormous problems many times over (much to the cost of his family). Never learns his lesson and never listens to advice.

In his case it's a mixture of desperation (could never hold down a job - inherent inability to compromise and therefore always living on the breadline) and laziness.

A fool and his money is soon parted and the world is unfortunately full of them. Usually the people who can least afford it and so badly want a quick solution to their financial problems they are prepared to believe the most unlikely story if it is just thinly coated with a single dollar bill. Like the sick and the old, we will always have them around.

What's written isn't very reflective of how the industry is now (especially because it was written in 2008!), but I thought it was a pretty honest take on what to expect.

Yeah, not so easy.
That's why I decided to make it a little bit easier and outsourcing a part of work to iStock. Why should I spend a lot of time selecting and checking at 100% details of all photos? Looking for sensor spots, purple fringing, logos on jeans' buttons, noise?
The excellent reviewers are here, they can do this job for me. They are paid over 80% for this. I was to respectful with them.
I estimate my gain to 3 hours/month.

And that author only has one file remaining on iStock, though the article does say they hadn't uploaded since 2006, when they started envanto. I wonder how much they make per month from that one illo nowadays.

Oh come on, you know that all we ever do is point a camera and push a button to make the perfect picture, we never have to do anything more than that!!! Our cameras even upload the photos directly to the web sites and keyword it for us!

Oh I forgot, we never have to travel any distance at all to get our photos, we just walk out our front door to get all of those photos we do take!

Have heard of those cameras and technique! Can't remember the name, but if my memory serves me right it was definitely model version BS.

and then when I'm out on the beach shooting a shipwreck, dodging in the surf to get the right shots/vids and that night after an 18 hour day knowing i have to make the sunrise..... go to the pub, hang out with the locals drinking whiskey and singing pirate songs....

I forget all about processing, keywording etc.

and think.... this is the best job EVER.

You get out of it, what you put in to it. It may be a lot, but it's better than anything else.
