Just read this.  Could be good news, if the copyright abusers sites are much harder to find.

Good news, now we need to do our bit a send take down notices whenever we see our work infringed, that's how Google is determining if the sites are "persistently infringing"

Very good news indeed. If Google and other major engines follow this policy seriously this could be really an enormous step forward for content providers of any type, and a major kick to copyright infringement even bigger than any governmental laws which are too fragmented and unable to give artists of any type a solution of ongoing and growing piracy practices

It's still dependent on people complaining sufficiently for them to take action.  It's a start, but if they were to back this up with a campaign to inform people of the requirement for complaint and the action to take, then I would feel more hopeful about it.

I doubt the sites owners will care too much about this. Those interested in breaching copyright (aka theft) already know where these sites are.

Perhaps they could lose out if they're using the site traffic to make money?  Getting booted off the first few pagers of Google searches will reduce their traffic, like it has with every other site that has had that happen.  If the site is running at a loss, perhaps they'll think of other ways to make money, like robbing banks :)

I think it's a good start.  Kinda scary reading the comments though.  10-1 against the move, bitching about "selling out to corporate interests".   ::)

I wouldn't worry, there is a very active, young, vocal minority that gets it nickers in a twist over anything that sides with copyright holders.
The amount of comments posted is no indicator of the weight of opinion.

The article is about video, music and TV shows. I certainly hope they are going to include images in the mix as well.

How true. The commenters don't have jobs and are writing those comments in their mom's basement as they use the cable service she pays for to download music and movies from the pirate sites.

Google is giving us an example of what may be the only way to stop the trend toward deprecating copyright. People, businesses, and even nations tend to stop being pirates when they start making money from the selling licenses to IP.
