As the subject states, I am looking for a photo and video hosting site for family photos/videos that:
1. Does not require guests to sign up
and
2. Allows the owner to password protect an image/video
I currently have a pBase account, which I like a lot. I can post images of the family which can be password protected. I can then send a link to friends & family along with the password to view the images. I like this because it doesn't require friends & family to sign up to (another) website. Some people don't want to sign up to websites.
The problem with the pBase account is that it doesn't host video.
Any ideas?

You can have private videos in YouTube. Viewers have to set up an account there, so you can enable these videos to their ID.

Thanks. I am going to think about SmugMug. My issue is the price. With many things free (or close to free), I have a hard time spending $60/year for hosting. But then again, I'm cheap :)

Thanks, but I was already aware of YouTube (as well as Google Video). The problem with YouTube (and Google Video) is that people need to sign up to see your private videos. I'm trying to avoid that, since many people don't want to sign up for a variety of reasons.

check out vimeo
http://www.vimeo.com
as long as people have the password they can see the video without signing up.

Thanks. I am checking out the site now. It looks very promising.

why don't you just buy private hosting , from a main hosting company and work from there and design a script or something to deliver it to your clients
